Exactly the same camp i'm in. The 360 degree joystick makes it a lot more bearable imo
Fun fact about the term "Jerry can":
British gas cans in ww2 sucked and everybody knew it. German cans stacked neatly and so British soldiers would steal them, and eventually reverse engineered and produced them. A slang for Germans at the time was a "Jerry", thus, making the stolen German gas cans and their design, "Jerry cans".
That's actually super interesting. WWII and WWI are probably some of the most interesting eras to me, so i love learning any facts i can about the era
Can't believe build 42 is finally out! I've been having a blast.
I liked this game well enough, but it's clearly made to play with other people, and I have no friends who would be interested in playing. The only friends who even game anymore are a couple who play among us almost exclusively.
PZ build 42 would have been perfect for my friend group of 10 years ago.
I couldn't disagree more, I love the game and think it's first and foremost a solo experience. I have around 500 hours in, and about 400 are exclusively solo, in various games since build 38. It's in single player where the truth of the apocalypse hits you, the dread of being alone against the world knowing you will fail but not knowing how and when... Even the sleep mechanic is exclusive to single player and drastically changes how you can approach the game, sticking closer to the gritty realism themes. Multiplayer, even in really harsh settings, often ends up with a somewhat trivialised survival, and sort of a devaluation of defeat. Unless you want to play it hardcore and reset if anyone dies (which can be understandably upsetting to some), you'll just respawn a character, get your stuff back, and you'll only have lost some xp and time which your mates can help you power through, instead of a entire "life" you really cared about.
Don't get me wrong, multiplayer can be heaps of fun, but I truly don't think it's the core of the game, and I'd really encourage you to try your hand at some solo play if you can be convinced :)
I actually had never heard about it until someone on lemmy posted a screenshot. Probably op lol
Bought it on sale when build 42 was released, and I put about 50 hours in before I started modding the game. Then around 250-300 hours with various QOL mods and a couple that add different military vehicles.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great game! I love it. I just can't really see myself playing another 300 hours without multi-player, or at least some kind of companion bot.
I'm sure there are tons of people who prefer solo experience, I just think that I would prefer a multi-player run with friends, or at least people who prefer being relatively close to other players for group defense while still doing their own thing...
It's a solid 10/10 game for sure, whether you play solo or multiplayer
Thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts more in depth, it makes a lot of sense, and I now think I was a bit too certain while writing my initial answer. Of course, different people care for different experiences, and that's absolutely fine :)
where the truth of the apocalypse hits you, the dread of being alone against the world knowing you will fail but not knowing how and when
That's a pretty interesting take.
Even the sleep mechanic is exclusive to single player
It's actually not, it's only disabled by default. The speed up will only take affect the moment every single player is sleeping, so it's not something you'd want in a massive public server with 73 players online, but for a small group of friends it works fine. Highly recommended, unless you like sitting around for 30 IRL minutes reading in the dark every night. Speaking of, one thing that IS exclusive to singleplayer is unfortunately the fast forward button, so reading really sucks and I always turn up skill gain speeds in MP.
It's true that I took a bit of a shortcut in my previous statement, I shouldn't have been so absolute.
And as a sidenote, I believe that I read somewhere that the intent of having sleep not activated by default in MP was also somewhat of a counter to not having timeskip, allowing players to "use" all of their available time (though as you said, you're still just waiting so I'm not entirely convinced by the argument)
It's definitely a different experience with friends. It really sucks because you get good experiences like these but if you don't have people to play with (or in people like me's case: hate playing with strangers) it's just an awkward experience.
It was originally made with NPCs in it, which made it play better as a single player game - but they took them out and focused on multiplayer (amongst other stuff) for... 10-15 years...
As in your case, I think 10-15 years ago, I probably had enough game-playing friends and enough "lack of responsibilities" to play multiplayer things (before it had any multiplayer) but not nowadays.
There have been a few reasonable NPC mods over the years (and probably there still is?) - but we're still waiting for NPCs to be put back in "properly".
In theory, version 43 is the NPC one, which I'm looking forward to.
So I kinda been interested in this game and for a long time it has been in my wishlist. But every time I added it to the cart, the feeling that it is going to require a hefty amount of time to get in as a solo player has stopped me and ended removing it from the cart :(
I say go for it. I honestly have had it since 2024 maybe and just recently reached 130 hours. You can adjust the settings to be super forgiving and can stop and pause at your pace (if singleplayer)
Oh, I didn't knew it had difficulty settings, I thought it was hardcore only. Good to know, thanks for the heads up.
Yeah, it definitely makes it a lot more bearable. it comes stocked with a few presets too, such as it's own "Builder" mode which is a more relaxing, chill difficulty
I've tried playing the game for years. I finally decided to get back to it and get gud because my biggest weakness is I haven't learned to fight well and I hated being carried by whoever I was playing with
I restarted a few days ago and was really surprised when I saw a big update. So I went in on the "easy mode" with a focus more on homesteading and chiller zombies and got used to the ui and took the time to figure out the mechanics of killing zombies, even a small pack
They have a tutorial that is (I think) well put together to walk you through the first steps
I understand saving the chickens but if they added barbecue sauce I got bad news for you...
lmao. I'm with you on that. I've made my own Barbecue chicken before and it tasted amazing
I make it fairly often, normally baked because I'm lazy but doing it on a barbecue is even better. Pack of frozen chicken wings, defrost before work, get home put them in a zip lock bag, pour in half a bottle of barbecue sauce, shake well, pour onto cookie sheet with aluminum foil, bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour at 350, enjoy
I usually prep it a day before hand to really let it soak. I'd do a few days but i was told to avoid it for Barbecue sauce because of the high sugar contents and the acidity breaking down the skin.
Also, you've made me hungry for it again lmao. I'm gonna pick some up and try to cook some
Yeah you can do a day before but as I said in the original message... I'm lazy
I've had Zomboid pre-Steam, it's really nice to see how far it's come. It's sooooo cozy now. Especially with that mod that replaces all the arcade machines with real world ones.
I love turning the zombies down to a manageable number and playing it to build an outpost. Perfect cozy game imo. We keep helicopter events on though to keep things from getting stale. It's really easy to dull the experience and make you feel too powerful, so it keeps us down a peg so we still have some trouble.
If it gets stale, turn on night sprinters.
I prefer day sprinters, it encourages you to take risks at night
I saw the release announcement and was thinking about pinging you about it, guess I didn't have to!
When you mentioned Jerry finding something he could actually love, I thought you will be talking about eating chickens next 😀
Glad to see Jerry and Cable back, looking forward to their adventures.
The proper game to be playing yesterday and today
Excited about the announcement for stable build 42. Gonna be getting back into it.
