I drive a car from 2001, but my parents have new-ish cars that both have backup cameras. I spend most of my time driving them around in their cars, so often when I'm backing up in my own car I find myself staring uselessly at the center console.

Of all the bullshit we have put in cars reverse cameras are one of the few things I don't think I can go without.

[–] VinegarChunks@lemmus.org 11 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

In large vehicles, especially.

I drive a commercial van for my largish family, and without a backup camera it would be vastly more dangerous.

I personally prefer the sensors that beep over the camera, auditory input takes less focus away from my already busy eyes

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

Yeah, they're pretty useful.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 1 points 14 hours ago

that's alright, that's what drivers with reverse cameras do as well, just stare at it and then act all surprised when I slap their car because they almost backed into me while I was out of view of their camera

I strongly dislike all these driver aids being standard. it seems to just make dumber drivers.

On the not-funny side, I went to a city government meeting some years ago where they were debating a development plan that included back-in parking stalls on the street. One of the city alders objected to that on the grounds that people like himself, in late middle-age, no longer have the flexibility to turn around and look behind the vehicle when backing up. This was before widespread back-up cameras in cars, so the implication was that he (and others like him) were just YOLO'ing it backwards out into traffic without looking.

(Even dumber when you realize that one of the advantages of back-in parking is that you don't need to twist around to look behind when backing into a stall.)

His argument was "I can't drive properly"?

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 5 points 19 hours ago

Seems to be.

You can tell it's AI because the person is all distorted, and now they don't seem to have the right number of fingers and limbs.

Uh I get ads in my KIA, just had a popup (while driving) tell me that there are new themes to download for the car GUI. Fuck that shit, I am letting KiA do a buy back as soon as I get my Slate.

I have a 2021 Seat Leon, and have deliberately never turned on any mobile service in the car, so far nothing like that crap has appeared

2026 EV9 and you can't turn shit off. I can disable the antenna but that would break the remote start automations I have set up with home assistant.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Slightly off topic, I have always wondered what the point of remote starting a car is, could you telm me more about your usecase?

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gets cold, remote start begins the process of melting snow and ice and warms the cabin so the windows dont refog once you start breathing in the vehicle. Also when hot the car cools so you dont get burned on the interior.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thank you for the info!

It is interesting to see how differently we use our vehicles, even in similar conditions.

That remote pre-warmup is super nice in winter. I have it on my xc40 too. Getting into a warm car without ice instead of a ice cold one is a dream.

Downside is that it runs the engine for an extra 10 minutes which causes extra exhaust pollution. Not on the electrical ev9 though.

[–] 20cello@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Pre warm up is theoretically illegal in my country, because of the pollution

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 2 points 19 hours ago

I am a Swede, and I do remember my dad having a petrol heater fitted to two of his SAABs, it had a timer and everything.

I get the point of that, but never really connected the two concepts...

[–] lemonhead2@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

and no cgi either

[–] tpihkal@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

That's all you had to say!
