My government's arguments against solar: we need to build a billion dollar storage facility for natural gas because hydo doesn't work in dry years and solar is too unreliable.

Me: you're saying we need gas because solar is unreliable

Government: correct, the sun isn't always shining

Me: and hydro has dry years

Government: yes, sometimes it's just sunny all the time so there's no rain for the hydo lakes

Me: 🀦

Meanwhile gas has been really reliable this year...

I have a prediction. The sun will not run out in our lifetime and will keep on shining. Oil might be a problem, and become scarce

[–] Duckingold@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you're wrong about the sun, no one will be saying much.

[–] baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

not even the super cool tardigrades that survive in extreme conditions including some amount of outer space?

[–] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not even. Primarily because they can't speak.

[–] baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

disappointing. what if we fed them some really good cheese?

[–] 9bananas@feddit.org 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

then they'd learn french...who's side are you even on??

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 6 points 22 hours ago

Elon's working on it...

And it’s hard to mine oil on top of almost any building while it’s rather easy to collect solar on almost any rooftop. This decentralizes the grid which is good for disaster recovery and national security.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago (4 children)

Bad for profits though. The sun is too free. How are they supposed to make money on this?

Solar generation stats - live

They know. Margins on oil are bigger. When oil price goes up, charge customers more immediately and slowly lower them is a classic for a reason. But when you build a solar park, someone invents cheaper panels.

Luckily they're not the only people in the energy sector.

Don't let the capitalists see this, might give them a heart attack

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

They could put a mirror in orbit and charge for nighttime solar.

We do not need anymore sunlight until we figure out how to fix global warming. Personally I'm in the put benign pollutants into the upper atmosphere and make everywhere have forever British weather camp.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 33 points 1 day ago

You know how capitalists love a disaster. They'll sell shovels all day while cornering the market on ladders. All the resistance to wind and solar comes from big money.

Having a coal mine on my roof also doesn't really work

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

One day, all of elon musks starlink satellites will open up their secret space sails and block out the sun for the benefit of the oil industry. /s

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly wouldnt even surprise me at this point. Seems orchestrating global disasters are his business now

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

How difficult would it be to DIY an anti-satellite weapon?

Attacking the satellites directly is rather hard, fucking up their signal and pissing off the FCC is rather easy though.

[–] hydrashok@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Just need a bunch of Estes rockets and some duct tape and you’re golden.
