This is because it’s emulating Reddit
That's not why. It's because the userbase is human. Humans are sometimes toxic, no matter the platform they happen to be on.
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
Guidelines:
Tag your post, if possible (not required)
Rules:
1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
6. Defend your opinion
This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.
Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

~~sometimes~~ always
There you go. I fixed it and proved it at the same time :)
i have never been toxic in my life i am perfect
You think so because you've never stood behind yourself while farting.
People are gonna suck no matter where you go. At least it's not generating profit for a piece of shit mega corp.
Downvoting because I actually don't think that's an unpopular opinion, but a rather widespread one.
Well, of course. People are going to be people. It really has little to do with the platform.
Downvoted for not being unpopular at all. Many users here have been (perma)banned from Reddit, so yeah, no surprises.
I'm tempted to pass this one by because it's so damn self congratulating.
But it isn't an unpopular opinion, it's too common for that.
And it's not really accurate in the way you present it.
It's a numbers game. If 90% of people are assholes (and that's a low estimate), then the more people in a given group, the more assholes are present.
But, if the group is started by people that fled to avoid assholes that also weren't mostly assholes, you get a period of leeway where assholery is very low. That period passed maybe a year and a half ago, +/- six months.
Since then. The numbers have gone up and the game is shifting towards the usual assholery.
not for those who block and create their own experience.
Reddit is getting less toxic by the day. Mostly because the ratio of bots to humans is increasing...
They don't even want people to browse it without logging in any more. I'd cruise by occasionally mainly to remind myself why I left, but I can't any more, so I don't even bother doing that. Reddit is dead.
Yes, you are absolutely correct to think so!
Going to be?
The common denominator is people. Anonymity gives some people the feeling they can say things they would never say face to face, which isn't all bad, but without filters discussions can be toxic. Been true since the early days, will always be true when there are few consequences for speaking without caring how it comes across.
I'm curious why you see niche communities as a bad thing. They were the shining part of Reddit, and many here complain that because of the decentralization it's harder to get them to grow. Maybe that's what you mean, they can't get big? That's not really a bad thing, small means more accountability potential.
I think the way to address this is to acknowledge, as a community, that dealing with the behavior of the worst people in the world is an evolving problem that needs to be continually, perpetually addressed if we are to have a sustainable internet community that isn't awful to engage with. I don't think it will ever be a truly solved problem, but I think there's a lot of room for improvement. And it think it's annoying, tiring, thankless work that's very worth doing, and worth figuring out how to do well. The better we figure out how to have a nice, global internet community, the better all our lives will be.
As you can see in the comments, full of people agreeing
lol no, this is ridiculous.
Completely agree and the downvotes show this is a great unpopular opinion. Gold star!
I just wish there was a social media that treated its users as adults
