A community for your defence shitposting needs

Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don't be an idiot.

Honestly, hardtack isn't too bad, as long as you don't look at it like a meal. It's either an ingredient or an activity.

I do Napoleonic era reenactment, and that means I've made an eaten a fair bit of hardtack. Pictured here is the fancier, more modern sort, with holes so you can break it without using a tool. The alternative is just round-ish chunks of it, which make you happy the muskets of the day came with a nice, solid wooden stock.

If you treat hardtack like a meal, it sucks. You can't chew it, so basically you're just swallowing it whole after grinding it up, and that sucks both going in and coming out. If you use it as an ingredient, say for stew or porridge, it works just fine. Not even hardtack can remain solid after boiling it for an hour, and it's an amazing thickener for pretty much everything. If you grind it up enough, you can even view hardtack as a form of solid flour, and bake pancakes with it.

The other method is to treat it like an activity. Eating hardtack is like chewing gum, something you can do while walking for a few hours. Keep a piece in your mouth and sloooowly let it soften, and at the end of the march, you'll have gotten some free calories in.

TBF a French peasant might have had less expectations about what food is for, anyway.

Although, that can go either way depending on which bit of pre-modernity is in question. Sometimes land was plentiful and lots of ingredients were around and in season, so peasants ate okay.

I’ve always loved the dimples in hard tack, I assume it’s so the weevils can feel like they live in apartment buildings.

I've never seen a more AI generated looking human that I'm 99% sure isn't AI

Tasting History with Max Miller, that was from his hardtack video early on in his channel. It makes a distinct clack clack sound, and now anytime he mentions hardtack, it's followed by that clip.

He's a VERY handsome man. Used to be Prince Charming at Disney World until he quit that to do his YouTube thing, which is some of the best content on the service. https://www.youtube.com/@TastingHistory

He does a lot of excellent work in bringing back some classic and sometimes downright ancient recipes. My personal favorite is the Chef Boyardee spaghetti.

His Tasting History content is great. He's clearly interested in the history and presents it well.

Hard tack was the inspiration for elvish lembas bread, no?

I have a passing interest in antique hiking/camping gear and I have no great love for hot food, so I should look into this.

[–] Barbarian@sh.itjust.works 48 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

The magic stomach-filling qualities of lembas bread combined with the knowledge it was based on hard tack was then combined by Terry Pratchett:

The dwarf bread was brought out for inspection. But it was miraculous, the dwarf bread. No one ever went hungry when they had some dwarf bread to avoid. You only had to look at it for a moment, and instantly you could think of dozens of things you'd rather eat. Your boots, for example. Mountains. Raw sheep. Your own foot.

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social 8 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

You could eat raw sheep, but not raw camel. Those animals were so vile that their names were always a heavy insult.

Damn I love Discworld... I miss Sir Pratchett so much...

[–] Barbarian@sh.itjust.works 7 points 16 hours ago

GNU Terry Pratchett

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

No, lembas is quite the opposite of hardtack, because it was soft, tasted great and you didn't need a lot of it to satiate your hunger.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Lembas is what hardtack would be if it was made by elves.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Almost as good as dwarf bread.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 7 points 21 hours ago

For Dwarf stone bread you have to include rock dust.

K-ration biscuits weren’t very different from hardtack

[–] glasratz@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The biscuits in German MREs are nicknamed armour plates. They are ok, though.
