I'm currently going through the junior year of my high school, that was 20 years ago exactly. It has been 22 years since my favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, had finally broken their Curse of the Bambino in 2004. The Harry Potter main book series ended 19 years ago while the film series ended 15 years ago.

Last weekend I bought a switch 2, and a father and son were in front of me. I got the pokopia bundle, they got Mario kart. The kid was telling me pokopia was really good, and asked if I ever played Mario kart. So I told him the last time I played that was on the Nintendo 64 in like 1999 when I was about his age

The kid thinks for a bit, and goes "oh wow, I didn't know you were an old lady!"

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ahahaha

In a way he kinda complimented you! You don’t look or seem old, at least 😆

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, it's sort of a compliment I guess.

My kids keep asking me if I played the same games when I was their age (Mario Odyssey, Sonic and Mario at the Olympics, Ori and the Blind Forest, etc). I keep telling them that I played other sonic and Mario games, but these specific ones didn't exist back then. They're still confused about WTF sort of ancient historical time that was. Same with their Android tablets and asking me if I had one as a kid.

Similarly, I heard a kid call the Xbox 360 “vintage” the other day. I started to argue that it’s not that old. It only released in… (Checks release date)… 2005? Oh shit it’s over 20 years old. That’s the same as child-me considering the NES vintage when I was playing my PS1.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The PS1 came out 10 years after the NES not 20. So you considering the NES vintage in the latter half of the 90s would be like considering the PS1 vintage when the Xbox 360 came out.

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Or more recently, thinking the Switch is vintage

[–] Tujio@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Ha. Similarly, I was at a big music festival a few years ago, taking to a random 20- something dude. I mentioned which bands I was there to see and he just yelled "YOU'RE OOOLD!" at me.

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Tech. I hate new tech more and more every year. I used to love new tech it was awesome and exciting even enjoyably silly at times.

Now I hate it. Everything spies on you. Everything is used to persecute you. Being online used to be a refuge from the shit sandwich of life, now it's become the destroyer of worlds. While there is still some good tech news, it's too often just bullshit wrapped up in surveillance packages.

Want to just EMP the world now

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

I feel this.

Remember when tech was weird, innovative, and wacky? Doing crazy things, and not always successfully. Especially around desktop computers.

and yeah, now its all plastic slop that listens to everything you do and reports back to some big database, that gets sold to and merged with other databases to build massive profiles about you. Oh watched video about drugs in 2023? No health insurance for you in 2045 because the profile has labeled you a drug user.

I genuinely think the last tech thing I had any excitement over was the initial Ryzen release, cause the chiplet design and unbelievable amount of cores you could have were just technically interesting at the time.. and yet, somehow, despite going from 4 threads to 12 threads, things are still slower and more clunky.. and thats because no one bothers to optimize anymore and just relies on brute force CPU/GPU horsepower to get through.

technology now is not just creepware feeding the profile, its also just boring and unimpressive and stupid (like toasters that require a live service that cant make toast anymore after the company shuts down)

Snoop and Eminem are grandparents.

[–] newbeni@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Ugh, okay, that hurt

[–] FilthyHands@sh.itjust.works 21 points 6 days ago (1 children)

About 15 years ago I started hearing Nirvana on classic rock stations.

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

A few years ago I started to hear "Guns n' Roses" songs in the local supermarket (think Walmart but in France). I almost vomit.

I remember Modest Mouse getting big and thinking at the time that it was for the generation after me. Just a few years ago I heard Float On in the grocery store. Real circle of life moment.

[–] TachyonTele_Esq@piefed.social 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I paid a couple kids to shovel my sidewalk. That was the moment I knew I was old.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 17 points 6 days ago

I finally really realized both that I am old and that I am mortal after both my parents died.

Got something you want to do? Get cracking.

[–] Klear@piefed.world 17 points 6 days ago

Recently I was listening in on a conversation and someone said "It was 15 years ago" and my reaction to that was "So not that long ago" 💀

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 12 points 6 days ago

Dad dying didn’t help, but more and more it’s the simple fact that I need a little ibuprofen to get through the day without my knees hurting.

[–] greatwhitebuffalo41@slrpnk.net 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That all my fun symptoms are "just peri menopause" FML

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Savior, HRT?

[–] greatwhitebuffalo41@slrpnk.net 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I do but apparently no doctor around me believes in anything but birth control 🙃

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

🫂 That's pretty typical. Getting a doctor who will give a shit about your hormonal health and emotional well-being is hard. The only suggestions I have are to keep trying different doctors, advocate loudly for yourself, and try in a less conservative area.

Online doctors can frequently be more understanding as well, and if you are capable of research and monitoring your health mostly yourself, a good option.

That's probably my plan when I'm employed again.

Y2K was half a lifetime ago.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

y2k really highlighted how stupid people were.

cause after it passed, there was soooo much about how it was stupid, pointless, etc, because nothing happened.

completely ignorant and oblivious to all the work that went into making sure it was boring do nothing event.

Have lived through the cycle of baggy pants, skinny pants, and now back to baggy pants.

(I'm sure someone older will be along that has gone through more cycles than that)

I counted the other day for a different comment and I’ve not been speaking to my mother for 14 years.

[–] palordrolap@fedia.io 9 points 6 days ago

It's Quake's 30th anniversary this year.

It seems like five minutes, not five years, since the 25th.

Next year my age has a five in it, five years after it last did. I cannot comprehend this. I'm still the teen who became obsessed with Quake. How did this happen?

[–] weps@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

you, writing that 2004 is 22 years ago

My 20th high school reunion is coming up...

I felt rather disconnected from youth/young adult fashion when those brokkoli hairdos became widespread. I wasn't ever particularly interested in fashion anyway, but those look like complete ass to me.

Also, Skyrim release was 15 years ago and they keep reminding you of their old-ass game by rereleasing it instead of a successor (I doubt it would be any good, anyway).

[–] Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk 2 points 4 days ago

When you're a five year old, one year is 20% of your entire life. When you're a 50 year old, it's 2%. As you get older, time passing does speed up, at least from your older perspective.

For me, and I know it's a bit of a meme, but the 1970s really do feel like they were only 30 years ago. It's like my brain picked 2000 as the point from which I understand and reference the passage of time. I have no doubt that when I've been alive longer in the 2000s than the 1900s I still won't feel like that's true.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

When people stopped seeing me. If they notice me at all, they immediately avert their gaze and look right past me. I used to get more attention than that.

Whenever someone posts "Are you this old?", and it's a picture of an original iPod, or an original Razr, or similar.

When I remember my son is the same age I was when I got married.

When I think about how many pets I've had, and they're all dead now.

When 40-year-olds talk about how old they feel.

[–] jpreston2005@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 40 and I still feel like I'm barely out of my twenties

The Xbox 360 will be old enough to drink in a couple months.

[–] qevlarr@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Recently realized I've gained weight seemingly overnight. Used to be rather skinny. Then I started thinking when this must have started and it's been 7 years.

[–] cmoney@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

Seeing a Chevy S-10 90's model with an antique license plate.

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Honestly, I've never felt old in my entire life.

But just from looking at me, most people cannot guess my actual age. Part of me is starting to worry that there's a picture around here somewhere that I definitely should not look at.

[–] ArbitraryValue@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Being told that my girlfriend was probably too old to have children naturally - technically about her age rather than mine, but we were close in age.

A few years earlier, seeing people born when I graduated from high school graduating from high school themselves.

Or before even that, living longer than my mom had - she died young but I hadn't really felt how young.

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 5 points 6 days ago

I was recently thinking about the Rocky Horror Picture Show 15th anniversary box set I bought when it came out, then realized that RHPS is now just over 50 years old.

[–] Nollij@sopuli.xyz 5 points 6 days ago

The Beloit/Mindset list that comes out every year. It takes the form of "This year's college freshman have always/never ______". For instance, they've always had GPS in their pocket. They've never used a desktop computer. $Celebrity has always been dead. It's always been a post-9/11 world.

Each year, that list always makes me feel old.

[–] criticon@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago

A lot of bands that I liked when I was in high school are now on 20th anniversary tours of their famous albums.

Also I saw a few Pokemon red 30th anniversary banners while in Japan

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

When an old, wrinkled, grey haired person, started talking to me about an old thing, and then didn't have experience about the things before it, like I did.

This was a while back. It makes me pretty happy now when it happens tbh. The people are always surprised, and I now realize they don't expect me to be that old. I've noticed that sometimes they seem to even be a little surprised when I know about whatever things they're talking about to begin with.

I'm older than old people! I made it. Wtf?!
