Time has reversed and we are back to beanposting

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 week ago

There is more traffic than a year ago.
Lemm.ee stopped.
The inter-instance fueds have mostly come to a stand still a.k.a instances have figured out who to block

There was a teeny little kerfuffle not long ago over something called the “Tesseract list.” You should go see if you’re on it. If you’re are, you’re in good company. ;)

[–] goo@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Can’t find any info on that, what is it?

[–] SpatchyIsOnline@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Tesseract was a web frontend for Lemmy that was used as the default for a few big instances when you visited them in your browser.

It was discovered that the frontend had a built-in hidden blocklist of instances and users that the developer deemed to be "toxic" despite the instances on the list being some very normal mainstream ones and the list of users being so large, a significant proportion of active posters/commenters were on it.

Users of tesseract were not told the list existed, admins/moderators could not disable it. It would just silently hide everything matching the filter without the user being any the wiser that they were missing content.

People were obviously angry about this and the developer, instead of apologising for how they handled things, doubled down, got clowned on by practically everyone and ragequit the platform.

Who woulda thunk a community that prides itself on user choice would be mad when someone else forces their choices onto said users...

from what I heard (I may be misremembering some things), there was a lemmy theme that had a file included in it with a bunch of instances (iirc) and users that got hidden (maybe it was more severe than just hiding? ). I think all this stemmed from a personal vendetta that the theme creator had.

I apologize for any inaccuracies that may be contained within.

We all have decoder rings and slide whistles now.

any big changes?

Nope. Still a good forum.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There's an interoperable alternate with more features and forums now. Try PieFed

[–] tal@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think that PieFed's been around for more than a year.

hits archive.org

Yeah, this is from February 22, 2024:

definitely had a step-change in usability & user base about ~9 months ago(?)

[–] tal@lemmy.today 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Hmm. That could be.

goes looking for numbers

According to this:

It looks like there was a pretty significant increase in 2026.

It’s not bean anymore it’s dean, don’t know if we passed by cean, looking forward to mean

[–] Nickelalloy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Welcome back! The shitposting has been full of the Tesseract event but now gone back to bean, sean and other shitposts.

Other than that some other smal events but things are like normal here, I had my first year here since yesterday and I think it has been great! Needs a bit of time and attention to grow my own homefeed since there is no toxix algorithms to hunt you with content!

[–] AbsolutelyNotSpez@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They're shitposting Deans instead of beans now. Apart from that just some recent drama regarding a frontend with an obfuscated user blocklist (I was one of many, despite mainly posting Star Trek memes and some random comments on random subjects). Admiral Patrick, apparently being responsible for it, rage quit Lemmy after being called out. I think you might get some good search results looking for 'Tesseract', if I remember correctly. I didn't get involved in the whole shebang and couldn't care less about drama.
