Lars Ulrich of Metallica is I think the most hated metal musician today, with the Napster case and his recent performances which are way too snare-heavy if you ask me (some would use the word "lazy").

But the large majority of the metal scene acts as if he was the worst drummer ever, which is obviously not the case. If you go and listen to Metallica's 80s and early 90s stuff, including bootlegs of live performances, this drummer is more than capable, but he also invented a lot of fills and patterns that came to be used prominently by others, like Mike Portnoy.

So I'm not saying this in defense of the guy - don't know him personally - but that's a blatant case of people not listening with their ears if you ask me...

Since people are fairly familiar with Western artists, I'd like to mention Orange Range, an Okinawan Rock/Hop Hop band that was huge in the 2000s in Japan.

Some of you might know them because they did a bunch of anime/drama OPs, ads, and even did the official World Cup support song for team Japan (a huuuuge feat for a bunch of kids from Okinawa), but they were joking around how they still music from famous artists during an interview, and the haters just chewed them up. I personally like their music and their "stealing," is more like "parodying," imo.

Moby. Play is a great album and I play that shit at least once a year.

Nickelback hate was pretty bad but got better I feel. Animals is a banger.

How long before we post bands we are suprised that nobody mentioned?

Currently Imagine Dragons. But I remember when Nickleback also was the butt of many jokes despite not being a terrible band.

Smash Mouth wound up getting overplayed with "All Star", but their debut Fush Yu Mang is excellent. Way better than you'd expect, and it's worth a listen if just for their first radio hit, "Walkin On The Sun".

Probably Nickelback. I'm no fan, but they seem to get the most hate of anyone just for being mediocre.

Imagine Dragons. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is:

They picked up hate for being marketed like they're some kind of super hard rock, even though they're not. But their music is good for the genre it is. The lead singer was raised Mormon, but is now an activist for LGBT youth.

Hanson. Their curse was that Mmmbop became THE hit early in their career. Their later stuff is in fact alright and with a lot more skill involved than a single repeated hook.
