I actually don't particularly care about either one, but some people who hated corporate memphis must be seething at how it got replaced.

Yeah, it's nice. Someone made it back when Facebook launched its "Alegria" style back in 2017. According to Wikipedia, this was the original Corporate Memphis style, and the company that developed "Alegria" were quite honest that their assignment was to do "image softening". This struck me as a very appropriate response.

I hate corporate Memphis as well, but I do not get the meme.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

people hated on corporate memphis, and wanted it to be replaced by something.

well, it got replaced by these generic AI artstyles, which are that way because the gen ai they use is based off the same data set, and no one bothers to put any creativty into the prompts.

turns out the real slop was corporate art all along

Am I the only one that kind of like corporate Memphis?

I am not saying they are artistic, but minimalist. It purposely doesn’t have much details and depth so the viewer doesn’t really focus on it and just gets a pretty simple idea or emotion from it.

It’s like hating elevator music cause it’s not the type of music you would listen to recreationally.

[–] 666dollarfootlong@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago

I think the reason it's hated is because of the "users" of this type of imagery (megacorporations) and the context it is used in. It is literally engineered, painted by numbers to make the ones displaying it seem more human(e), as having a soul, when its true purpose is to "increase engagement". People hate it because this type of imagery is usually accompanied by slogans like "We value your privacy", followed by a meter long paragraph describing all the ways they collect and use your data.

Except I do hate elevator music because it's shitty music.

Corporate memphis would've been fine if it wasn't - you know - corporate. If it had lined the halls of youth hostels like those dancy rubber guys it would've been just another quirky minimalist art style.

What dancy rubber guys are you thinking of? Have an example?

I'm gonna guess Keith Haring

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 51 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Fuck you, one day I'll have something like this.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 29 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I’m expecting Cowboy Curtis to bust in and then see all the furniture yelling at the word of the day.

I love the original Memphis. It feels like I'm on a weird 90s spaceship

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Or just in the Telly Tubbies dome

[–] einlander@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago

Legally Distinct Tardis.

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

From "Corporate Memphis" to "Corporate Mephistopheles".

[–] restingOface@quokk.au 27 points 2 days ago (2 children)

"Corporate Memphis" is just a particular art style that people dislike. "AI-generated images" is not an art style. I assume AI could generate something in Corporate Memphis style if you wanted it to. No one is replacing human-generated Corporate Memphis art with AI-generated art in another style. People choose Corporate Memphis for a reason. If anything, they might choose to use AI-generated Corporate Memphis now that the option exists. But people who would previously use human-generated Corporate Memphis art are not using AI-generated art in some other style now.

[–] CardboardDecoy@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I didn't know it was called Corporate Memphis! I actually prefer it to endless dead-eyed stock photos, personally. At least someone was experimenting or focused on a goal when making it.

[–] jlow@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah, didn't know it was called either that and like it as well. Maybe because I've known it from before it was coopted by evilcorps. I think of it a classic graphic design style used in cool children's books and on posters.

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People choose Corporate Memphis for a reason

I always assumed that reason was that it was cheap.

[–] ChristerMLB@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

nah, it's supposed to be classy, professional and playful – originally developed to make Facebook seem like less of an evil and soulless corporation

[–] calcopiritus@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

I hated corporate Memphis.

Now I hate AI art.

I still hate corporate Memphis though, it's still awful.

[–] antsu@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 2 days ago

They all suck, but the top-right one in the AI-generated section grinds my gears down to the atomic level. I can't begin to explain the pure undiluted hatred I feel for slop extruded in that style.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

If AI is so smart why are the expressions different in each. Not only does the style change, but the tone and her emotion vary.

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

One of the reasons I'm pretty neutral on AI art is that it mostly replaced even more soulless stuff like corporate Memphis.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Clip art was peak corporate graphic design.

[–] underscores@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

I hate mob face AI so much

[–] lemmysmash@piefed.social -4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Even AI crap is better than that utter garbage.

[–] doppydrop@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 days ago

Don't worry, they are one and the same now
