Maybe play up their petro-instability. Describe how much more aggressively they can drive with the massive instant torque of an EV, compared to their obsolete clanking collection of gears
I understand the academic roots and I'm sure the paper it was coined in is top tier sociology. But we have got to stop labeling bad shit as masculine, it only amplifies the behavior. The dude 6" off your bumper is not going to hear "petro-masculinity" and have a quiet contemplative moment about carbon emissions and road safety. He's going to feel scolded, hear that you're triggered and frightened of his masculinity, and then he's going to start driving even more aggressively out of spite. And nobody will stop him, because nobody with the power to do so cares. Hell, the cops themselves are often the ones who drive like this.
Is there any action that won't trigger spite from this type of person? Their entire existence consists of playing the victim and throwing tantrums because somebody advocated for something different to what they are used to.
This thread got me thinking. I think OP is correct that we need to stop doing the masculinity thing. If its a behavior change we are hoping for a better way to cause self reflection might be to use some of the noble features of what they think masculinity is. Does a protector drive like that and endanger everyone? Other peoples families / kids are also on the road. Would someone trust you to drive their loved ones around? Dont you want to be the guy everyone can count on to do the right thing and get us back safe?

Yep. If you want to reach people it's gotta be relevant to what they care about.
Making fun of them, making them part of the outgroup. You can’t show fear, so in this case with the car just get out of the way and let them fuck tenderness up the road because they will get caught. Or call the cops and say they are swerving appearing drunk lol.
But in regular life you basically need to laugh in their face and cut them out of being in the group.
Maybe, maybe not. I know for a fact that this type of communication backfires spectacularly though.

I didn't pay for access but the abstract seems pretty solid, and the blog post I linked (by the same author) lays out a pretty convincing line between 20th century white american masculinity and support for fossil fuels even in the face of their economic obsolescence.
It's great work, I just question the wisdom of using academic terminology in op-eds. Like obviously the fascist is going to throw stones but why oh why would you willingly hand them a bigger rock

Because a cop's job is to protect the rich. They do the bare minimum to keep us in line, to keep the people from considering rioting, to keep us going to work, etc.
Power doesn't care whether we kill each other, wreck cars, plow over kids in the cross-walk, etc. Power has no empathy. Power only cares when we get so fed up we take to the streets and show up at their front door with torches and pitchforks. That's when the cops earn their pay, when they show up in force, kitted out, and ready to rumble.
Kids being shot inside the school? Hold back till the shooting stops, don't want any of us getting hurt.
People rioting and threatening power directly? Bring out the tanks. Remember the George Floyd protests?
