Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Not current, but a possible counter point would have been Nelson Mandela.

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 37 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I had a longer title in mind that said there was a small chance of it being a great thing, but a much higher chance of it being a really, really bad thing

[–] FriendOfDeSoto@startrek.website 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I think you could save this one still. People knew his name before he was elected leader because he was imprisoned by his racist government. That's not really a good thing.

Aung San Suu Kyi, for a short time while in power before she tolerated genocide on her watch, would have sort of fit in the Mandela category as well.

Ok, Ho Chi Minh, and the one thing that the guy who oversaw crimes against humanity and slavery against Uncle Ho's people was known for was good. The other things Charles De Gaul did, not so much.

Aung San Suu Kyi

Man, she was such a disillusionment.

Not a country leader, but Zohran Madani is quite well known

If you say "I can't wait for him to die" and the whole world thinks of the same person, it's probably pretty damn bad

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 16 points 1 week ago

He's so stupid that you even know who I mean when I say "he's so stupid".

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I have started looking for restaurants for when Trump dies, at the moment I have been looking at the best Greek restaurants, but I'll make a spreadsheet with options and pick on the day.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

pick on the day.

Yeah, making a reservation several days beforehand would probably raise a couple red flags 😁

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not like you have to specify "I'm making this reservation to celebrate Trump's death" though

[–] GloriousGasHole@piefed.social 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

Hopefully, it happens on a Tuesday. If so, I'm doing Taco Tuesday 😂. Specifically, the Doritos Locos Tacos from Taco Bell because they're orange.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

Hey, any day can be a Taco Tuesday if you want it to be. Especially if the taco in question is himself the kind that changes things names on a whim. You could have 7 or more Tuesdays per week for all I care.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

Fucking brilliant

[–] EvilHankVenture@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I'm finding someone who set up a tent on the side of the road making street tacos and ordering all the lengua and cabeza tacos they have.

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

On the flip side. Let him stay long enough to destroy his movement.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, he's doing tons of damage to it right now. When he dies they're going to try to whip the cult into a frenzy, so the more that can be disillusioned before he croaks, the better.

Case and point: José Alberto "Pepe" Mujica Cordano is afaik the most famous "objectively good guy" president and you've probably never heard of him.

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Part of a Marxist-Leninist urban guerrilla group fighting a democratically elected center-right government. Mujica was variously the sole survivor of a mission to take a telephone exchange, shot six times fighting multiple policemen (he injured two), part of four prison escapes, and lost his mind after years of solitary confinement.

[–] morto@piefed.social 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The only leader I know that openly confronted consumerism and considered it a priority, as well as the concept of infinite economic growth. He even criticized latin american left parties for having turned poor people into consumers, and not into citizens (as in people with rights)

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

My favorite thing was how he never had security cuz was an authentic national treasure.

What did Ghengis Khan ever do to you? Actually, nevermind.

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He didn't want us to get it on...with nobody else but him

They may not have known his name, but there was a time when (hopefully soon to be former) New Zealand prime minister Chris Luxon became the face of shitty landlords the world over.

[–] SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

On the other hand, “Jacinda” was suddenly commonly heard admiringly at many kitchen tables around the world for a brief time.

[–] sfxrlz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

A Reddit link, In this economy ?

funny though

[–] DigDoug@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah, sorry, it was the only place I could find the meme.

[–] taygaloocat@leminal.space 16 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Jacinda Ardern and Barack Obama both had a pretty good rep and worldwide appeal. Maybe even Xi Jinping

Idk if your statement is correct

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The guy who expanded the drone war to like 8 countries, bailed out the banks after they stole millions of homes, and built the cages for immigrants?

He looks good next to the guy who invaded Iraq and the guy who is currently bombing Iran.

I've never heard Jacinda Ardern mentioned until now. And Barack Obama was the first black POTUS (and also ridiculed by some because of that). Xi Jinping is probably the best example.

Except for Obama. A lot of people outside the US knew Obama, and loved/love him.

Trump everyone knows, and hates.

So both sides of the coin here.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Yeah, lots of people knew his name and hated him. And I'm not talking US racists. I'm talking the friends and family of innocent people he killed with drone strikes.

That's the problem, people think of Trump as the cause

He's the result.

When your government is for sale, the elected are greedy, ruthless, amoral villains.

Trump is stupid, we'll miss him when someone brilliantly evil "wins".

[–] Mr_Fish@lemmy.nz 8 points 1 week ago

A lot of the world heard about Jacinda back during lockdowns, and that was for a good reason

[–] taygaloocat@leminal.space 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I remember Hungary apparently had a really bad leader for a while but I have no idea what his name was.

[–] Mr_Fish@lemmy.nz 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You thinking of Victor orbarn (not sure if that's the right spelling)

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

Orban

He was replaced with Peter Hungarian. No, I'm not kidding, that's what the new guy's last name (Magyar) means in Hungarian.

Can't wait for Trump's reign to be over and John American to take over.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That's not true. You know of Mussolini, and that's not necessarily a bad thing oh I see what you mean yss this is bad

[–] HamsterRage@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hmmmm...

I give you Mark Carney.

Our leader in the U.S. is a perfect reflection of our conservatives. If you know his qualities, you know the qualities of our conservatives. If you know conservatives, it's pretty obvious there is no peaceful way out of our situation.
