Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

My boss works from home and has a baby who hates his work voice (by which I mean his normal voice), so lately our morning calls have involved 15 minutes of normal work followed by some baby screaming, followed by the next 10 or 15 minutes of him using a silly song-song voice to talk about tech metrics and whatnot. I like to reply with my patronizing voice.

[–] RustySharp@programming.dev 28 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Huh interesting. We had a chat with our midwife and she offhandedly said it would be easier on parents to skip the baby talk/voice, and just speak in your normal calm voice so the baby gets used to the "real" you.

I guess your story perfectly illustrates her point.

Baby talk has its place. It's structured to help with learning to talk. It also acts as an indicator "pay attention to this". The mistake most parents make is continuing it too long. Once they start talking, shift out of it to full sentences etc.

That said, if they only hear you talking baby talk, you're doing them a disservice. They need both.

In the OP, the baby likely just wanted more attention. Non-baby talk = less attention, in their mind.

I have so much empathy for parents with their seemingly endless patience, I know I wouldn't last a month in their position.

It's not for everyone. The continuous grind is exhausting. However, having a little bit of your soul outside your body, and vulnerable, has an incredible effect on your motivation. I find myself happy to push through exhaustion to set something up for my little minion. For them it's a fun activity for an hour. For me, it's several hours of work to give them a fun experience.

It is, as far as I can tell, a neverending learning exercise for parent and child both.

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 20 points 20 hours ago

Am adult child, can confirm.

You kinda don't have a choice. Babies/kids are not going to respond to anger well and it's also not something you want them to emulate. Also trading off with the other parent or family is also helpful when it gets too much. Thinking about it that honestly applies across most if not all relationships but especially in teaching/mentoring

My white German Shepherd tries to herd us all into bed at night. She snaps she growls she barks. She has very strong opinions about what the pack should be doing when the sun goes down. She's very sweet but she's also very pushy.

She snaps she growls
She has very strong opinions about what the pack should be doing

that's neither acceptable nor cute. dog is not the one who should be making decisions about what the pack is doing. you should do something about it before it ends bad for the dog and/or someone else.

Humans often don't get as much sleep as they probably should.

https://www.cdc.gov/sleep/data-research/facts-stats/adults-sleep-facts-and-stats.html

The percentage of adults not getting enough sleep varies by state. In 2022, it ranged from 30% of adults in Vermont to 46% adults in Hawaii.

That dog might just know best.

You people draw the longest conclusions from the scantest evidence.

[–] silver@das-eck.haus 38 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

I think it's time for you to divorce the dog, hit a lawyer, delete the gym, etc

[–] Janx@piefed.social 9 points 17 hours ago

Damn it. I hit social media, deleted the lawyer, and took the dog to the gym!

🀣 can't be a better representation of how the reddit hivemind worked in the before times.

[–] 14th_cylon@lemmy.zip 2 points 13 hours ago

the commenter i replied to wrote it pretty clearly there, white on dark grey. i am not making any conclusions, i am simply reading what they wrote.

Just FYI, the Alpha Pack Theory has been thoroughly discredited. I hope the other poster is addressing problematic behavior (if it exists) with their vet and other experts, but we have no idea. The "pack", however, has nothing to do with it...

[–] 14th_cylon@lemmy.zip 5 points 13 hours ago

Just FYI, the Alpha Pack Theory has been thoroughly discredited

that is completely irrelevant to the point i am making. the dog should still not set the rules of the household and enforce them with their teeth, because if you let such behaviour continue, it will sooner or later get someone hurt and the dog euthanized.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago

I have a pit mix but he definitely gets upset when the humans are not in their proper places at bed time. His house, his rules. Too bad we don't follow his rules so he just marches around us all night.

[–] trolololol@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

So funny

You should tell your dog that donuts and other unhealthy snacks are only allowed on weekends. Instant diet hack!

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 3 points 17 hours ago

My cats behave similarly - if i am not lying down so they can cuddle with me in the evening, one of them starts giving me little love bites all over my arm and the other one becomes annoying as fuck by throwing small things off tables and stuff like that

[–] Slovene85@sh.itjust.works 1 points 16 hours ago

She snaps she growls she barks.

She does this thing she calls the "jump back jack"
