I like that Lemmy is queers and Linux and star trek

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 hours ago

I don't want a copy of Reddit's culture on Lemmy, but I think Lemmy's culture will be similar because of the interaction format and because a sizable number of Lemmings I presume use Reddit and Lemmy both regularly. So it will be up to how close the viewer looks to determine if they seem the same or distinct.

I think one thing I don't see much on Lemmy are the very tired 3+ nested comment chains that don't add conversational value, like "and my axe!". I've only seen it very occasionally, and usually in good joking taste, for example the trope "[term OP used] means this, you probably were thinking of [also incorrect word]".

[–] ABetterTomorrow@sh.itjust.works 11 points 14 hours ago

The people will create the culture naturally and naturally it will evolve over time and time again.

[–] Heide@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Lemmy users are exactly like Redditors, just way more obnoxious.

I actually find it hard to read comments on here, as a new user

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 9 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Lemmy already has several cultures independent of Reddit.

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 11 hours ago

Beans, jeans, no pooping...

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 6 points 18 hours ago

Most of us are here because reddit is shit and unusable. Why would we want that here?

[–] dontbelievethis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I don't know, it looks a bit weird. It uses letters like an ai would.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 29 points 1 day ago

Lemmy is going to have the culture it has.

[–] zoltanshields@lemmy.zip 4 points 18 hours ago

It'll develop. Whether it should or not eventually Lemmy will develop its own distinct online culture which carries across instances, topics and communities.

I know people will think it won't have its own particular culture because it's decentralized etc etc but I remember people saying the same thing about Reddit in like 2011. The smaller community identities either got absorbed into the larger idea of what a "redditor" is or the subs just died.

It's a little early to say, but Lemmy culture so far has a lot of carryover of Reddit. Which makes sense considering most people here probably used Reddit first. In my experience Lemmy yo-yos between reddit but grumpier and reddit but more conversational. It reminds me a lot of early reddit in that people put more effort into their comments than other places, but also has an air of confident pseudo-intellectualism. There's no real hivemind yet but there are generally popularized norms.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 7 points 20 hours ago

I think the fediverse is a series of individuals who will create microcultures. we will not all be interacting with everyone and will be what we will be.

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Forced culture is what shaped all the failed platforms like Reddit, I don't think I would like that.

[–] BooBees@fedinsfw.app 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, I agree, let’s force a non forced culture, with beans and hookers!

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In trying to figure out if you misremembered the phrase "blackjack and hookers" or if '"beans and hookers" is some other reference, all I found were pages for Boston sex workers.

[–] BooBees@fedinsfw.app 5 points 1 day ago

I just fused beans from Lemmy with the blackjack and hookers, instead of saying like beans and deans.

[–] the_q@piefed.social 18 points 1 day ago

People suck. They're going to suck here like they suck in reddit.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What people hate about reddit is what people hate about mobs. If Lemmy ever gets as big as reddit, it will suck just as much.

[–] Tonuka@feddit.org 9 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I hate this kind of talk. For me the point of the fediverse isn't that it's cool because it's niche, but that it's cool because it's a solution to a systemic problem with Social Media. I want Lemmy to get big and messy and full of obnoxious people. I think that's a GOOD thing. Because then they'll be on the fediverse, and not on a platform owned by a single billionaire

[–] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 3 points 13 hours ago

The fediverse won't survive that kind of growth in its current form.

Federation requires mutual trust. As soon as there are enough users to make it a target, and a sophisticated threat appears, it will be impossible to avoid manipulation.

lemmy.world will defedrate from everyone.

I don't think this is "bad", just a predictable future of the fediverse.

[–] toiletobserver@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The mob already exists here

Whatever funhole is doing.

[–] theywilleatthestars@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Lemmy will have whatever culture it has.

[–] Tonuka@feddit.org 4 points 21 hours ago

Yeah but also social media is just a medium. It's the people who create the culture, not the medium. Sure people adapt to other people but you still start somewhere.

Tumblr was popular with young people, women and minorities, and to this day it's overwhelmingly queer and female. Facebook was popular with young people but was quickly discovered by organisations and businesses as an easy way to be public facing, so over time it's become sort of more professional and inclusive of older people.

What kind of people used reddit? Before it got popular, it's culture was influenced by millennials, nerd culture and hobby forum culture. That's what's stayed. What kind of people use Lemmy? Well, that's the question isn't it?

[–] NewDark@lemmy.today 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thankfully there's different instances

[–] AskewLord@piefed.social 1 points 17 hours ago

doesn't stop people from flooding other instances with their instances culture

[–] LORDSMEGMA@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

Having migrated a couple times, I've found that instances have their own culture and I don't see anything wrong with that.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 4 points 22 hours ago

I don't really like the parroting of in-jokes thing. Probably any sufficiently long lived large group will probably have in-jokes, but reddit-isms always grated the most.

[–] thecryptickler@reddthat.com 1 points 17 hours ago

I hope it's more thoughtful.

[–] babysmokesalot@sh.itjust.works 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

I want many cultures to digest the nonsesnse of this modern life. Reddit is a bot pig pin owned by the corpos. It is a filthy useless place. Some times I use redlib to see what the piggies are up to. You know intel. I have not used reddit for like a decade. I am too spicy. On lemmy you can get around banned from community and challenge the ignoramuses via smashing hug boxes.

[–] arotrios@kbin.earth 2 points 21 hours ago

Culture = your Cult

The decentralized design of the Fediverse intentionally allows differing cultures to interact, while preventing any single one from dominating the means of communication. The attempt to define cultural rules is a fools errand without centralized control.

The Fediverse has no centralized control, and thus will never be subject to a single set of cultural rules - nor should it be.

[–] ieightpi@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Just let people be themselves. I think that the open source nature of the threadiverse will keep the culture pretty level headed. No algorithms trying to promote rage for clicks. It's gonna be fine.

[–] AskewLord@piefed.social 1 points 17 hours ago

really, then why is most of the top posts in the all feed nothing but ragebait?

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, but here we are, anyway. Largest instance is R*ddit 2.0.

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

almost like its just a reflection of a general sample of humanity than any given platform.

weird how that happens... turns out; humans just suck

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 6 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Humans do not suck. Some of us do because our societal systems are gamed to that endeavor. Other social systems are not and produce better humans, and some humans evolve to be better because of and despite those systems.

I'm sure every user here has their own culture.

Seriously, you should clean out your fridge once in awhile.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 2 points 1 day ago

It does and should.

[–] Sergio@piefed.social 1 points 22 hours ago

I don't know what reddit's culture is like, since I left years ago.
