Donald Trump would prefer that voters not worry about inflation. But it’s hard for them to ignore.

Filling up a basic Ford F-150 truck now costs about $100, up $30 from a year ago. Mortgage rates have jumped to levels that have depressed home sales. And for the past 12 months, consumer prices have risen faster than paychecks, making the average family poorer.

One week before midterm elections that will serve as a referendum on his second term, Trump is struggling to deliver on his campaign promise to bring down costs, even as he insists the country has entered an economic “golden age.” The same frustration that powered his comeback two years ago could now cost Republicans control of Congress.

He didn't fail to stop shit. He exacerbated the problem intentionally to enrich himself and his cronies.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

He isn't "struggling to deliver on his campaign promise to bring down costs." He has no intention of doing that. He never had any intention of doing that.

And by "golden age" he means "gilded age." There's a big difference.

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Failed to stop? He purposefully exacerbated it for the benefit of himself & the rest of Epstein class.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Biden already stopped inflation - Trump only needed to leave things alone long enough for the numbers to stabilize.

This is new inflation directly caused by Trump

[–] CptOblivius@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

I mean...he made everything worse. Everything. And I'm not exaggerating.

[–] Radical_Socialist_t00t@lemmy.ca 1 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Title makes it sound like the republicans aren't part of the problem from the start. Trump is the GOP and GOP is trump. He's just the latest republican mascot to sit on the throne.

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

You don't understand he made billions, so everything is fine. Now vote for him again, he will make more billions.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Trump failed to stop inflation.

Trump actively fueled inflation.

Despite his lies during the campaign, everything he did made inflation much worse than if he had done nothing at all.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 123 points 2 days ago (6 children)

He didn't fail to stop it, he succeeded in worsening it.

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 80 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Whoever wrote the headline is—intentionally or not—diverting the blame for the inflation from Trump.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He can't even use the "we tried nothing and we're out of ideas" because his actions torpedoed the economy. And that... NO ONE could have foreseen from the Great Businessman.

[–] uberdroog@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

He and his cohorts profited and solidified the grift. HIS business is on the up.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 11 points 2 days ago

Which is fair. Republicans are in charge of all 3 branches of government, and have gone along with everything Trump wants.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Weird how often things become a sort of mystical force of nature when Republicans are involved. Even when their policies can be tied directly to higher inflation.

[–] TingoTenga@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The morale is to bully mainstream media. It gets you more favorable treatment.

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

It's the logical outcome of his actions and anyone with 3+ brain cells knew this would happen.

They outlined everything neatly and none of that would be beneficial for the economy.

[–] b34k@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean, inflation was effectively down to a bit over 2% in the weaning months of the Biden admin, which means it had been (for all intents and purposes) stopped.

I think it’s fair to say that (thanks to tarriffs, deregulations, and wars) Trump created inflation.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Came here to say this. What should be made clear in the headline is that donnie fucked up an economy that was called the envy of the world.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Twice. He achieved that twice. He did it in the first term when he failed to address COVID properly, and then people put him back in office where he's already done more damage in half the time. I'm almost certain that our place on the world stage is irreversibly gone. And people continue to cheer as he yanks more and more jenga blocks without even the courtesy of a test poke. They'll continue cheering when the tower comes crashing down. They are too dumb to recognize how fucked they are.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (3 children)

You should read the book Blockers. It's infuriating as fuck.

And that's just one author and one book. Who knows how many stories there are out there yet to be told - or may be never told - about how much donnie and his brainless accomplices have done to fuck this country up.

And as far as I know, not even one of them has paid the price for doing it. Yet.

in order to 'fail', one must at least 'try'. there was not even an attempt to. just some smoke and mirrors such as whining to europe about their own fuel reserves.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At the start of his the year it wasn't so bad but it hasn't been below 3% since the massive bombing campaign started. Recent inflation has been overwhelmingly driven by oil prices.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I keep seeing these articles and can't help but think that they said this about Republicans a lot right before they corrupted elections and won anyway.

[–] Wataba@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Its all theater to distract and placate

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Republicans have been the party of inflation since the Nixon Shock. If the money in your pocket is dissolving, then you're encouraged to invest in businesses to save for retirement. Then once you're dependent on those investments, you'll defend them.

They want every American drowning in debt. They want us living paycheck to paycheck. They want us to fail and then call us lazy, irresponsible, and financially illiterate. The purpose of a system is what it does.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No the system can certainly behave in a way that was not its intended purpose.

Ostensibly capitalism is about trade and labor and resource distribution.

De facto it is a vehicle for wealth concentration and creating an advanced feudal state.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Ostensibly it isn't, look it up on Wikipedia.

There's benefit of the doubt, and then there's gullibility.

[–] Toga77@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Failed to stop?

Is the writer fuckin stupid?

He CAUSED most of the current US inflation that the previous admin had made progress on getting under control.

Can we at least be accurate with the fucking news.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

We're trying to find the guy who introduced tariffs and started a war with Iran.

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

Failed!? He fucking made it worse. ON PURPOSE!!!!

[–] durably465@lemmy.ml 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So basically they will get fu*ked only because of gas price?

Nothing about foreign policy, nothing about Trump sucking toes of bibi & pootin, nothing about US citizen getting shot & murdered by ICE? Nothing about massive corruption?

And... Ah yeah I forgot, what about the Epstrump files?

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Delusion can survive a lot of things, but losing everything can help.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

He didn't stop inflation because he didn't try to stop inflation. He continues to actively sabotage the economy so he and his minions can profit.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yup, and even if there is a MASSIVE blue wave, the orange pedo and all his propaganda outlets will spend the next 2 years blaming EVERYTHING on Dems...and 2028 will be 2024 all over agin

[–] zd9@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There will be a massive blue wave, but Republicans aren't simply letting themselves be Constitutionally and democratically removed from power. They're not leaving or losing, they know this is their last stand and will do anything to keep power. They've said they will cheat, not accept results, and essentially coup the government when they lose.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I just saw a bunch of YouTube vids about they've already filed motions to toss out ballots in seeing states, and now people in TXs are saying their votes were flipped on machines similar to TN.

The next 2 weeks are gonna be vicious

[–] zd9@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yep, and they're already deploying ICE to polling places. I just saw an example in Florida, where they "had to pull someone over and it happened to be a few feet away from a polling place" and they "happened to stay there for a long time".

Buckle up, stock up on necessary items for food, water, and safety, and VOTE.

Also please do some phone banks to get others to vote too. Environmental Voter Project is a great organization that I've done for the last few weeks.

It's not hard at all, each session is only an hour, and you make calls at your own pace. It feels great to actually get people out to vote, because instead of just having a 1x impact by casting your own vote, you could have a 100x impact if you encourage 100 people to vote (which isn't hard, you can hit 100 in like 3 one hour sessions). This legitimately makes a difference in elections, take a look at their results.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 16 points 2 days ago

May. It’s sad that it’s a “May” and not a “Will” in the first place.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 days ago

Failure implies that he tried.

[–] My_IFAKs___gone@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, I'm sure this time all the transphobic pedoloving christofascist racists straight outta 1865 will see the error in their ways and actually vote in the interests of non-billionaire grifters.

[–] chahn.chris@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It’s expected a lot of them are going to not vote this election. The frustration in that camp is pretty high right now.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

If you've already voted and you know someone who's too lazy or distracted, give them your Sample Ballot as a cheat sheet

[–] My_IFAKs___gone@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

If only they could see some other way to change the world to make their frustration less frustrating. Oh, if only.

[–] MyOpinion@lemmy.today 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Republicans deserve to be destroyed as a party to NEVER RETURN.

[–] logi@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

Destroy the Republican Party and split the Democratic Party into a center left and a center right part. Then abolish FPTP.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

As long as we all vote them out…please don’t listen to what the media says. Yes I agree things look good but we seen this 2024 and 2016.

[–] Quexotic@infosec.pub 2 points 2 days ago

No. They won't. I mean, I'd like to set aside the cynicism, but I find myself unable.
