Now we understand why Trump didn’t want [the Epstein files] released.

Just a week before the midterm elections, which are already shaping up to be a bloodbath for the GOP, Democrats have dropped a bombshell. “A growing body of evidence demonstrates that Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s,” states a just-released report from the Democrats of the House Judiciary Committee.

Additionally, they claim that Trump has leveraged his FBI and DOJ to cover up the evidence, and have now called for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate any potential wrongdoing.

dear fediverse users: you are not the audience this headline is trying to reach.

[–] DrSoap@lemmy.world 4 points 57 minutes ago

But, but... Epstein didn't kill himself

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 19 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

So many of you in the comments are subject to exactly what the article describes:

"Part of the problem with the stories of Epstein, Trump, and the corruption all come down to the same thing: The bit-by-bit release of information has created a long record of abhorrent behavior, which means that the bar to shock is so high it’s almost impossible to clear. There is a kind of disgust fatigue at play: Yeah, we know Epstein was a disgusting sex predator, and that some of the men around him probably partook too; what’s new? Those who are ideologically motivated to believe Trump at all costs are also probably motivated to believe him on Epstein too; very little seems like it would change the minds of hardcore MAGA adherents."

They said they worked to "flood the zone with shit" and you are all spewing it today. Calm down with the surprise memes. Sit in the hard feelings, shut up or do something about it

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 9 points 45 minutes ago* (last edited 45 minutes ago) (2 children)

or do something about it

What can I dom? It's kind of a trope with millennials at this point that memes are the form of "action" that represents our overall powerlessness to hold such people accountable, despite it being a scandal that redefines the meaning of "watershed moment".

If diddling kids for decades isn't enough to enrage a country into burning it down, what is?

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 6 points 38 minutes ago

Right? The leader of a country is known for hurting children. Everyone just says, "Yeah I don't like it, but there's nothing I can do about it." because the idea of organizing is so foreign to them that it's not even considered. That's an oppressive society.

[–] KeavesSharpi@lemmy.ml 37 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It wasn't because he's in them 30,000 times? I thought it was because he was in them 30,000 times, and also an adjudicated rapist. There's other reasons they don't want to talk about him being a proven racist? Weird.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

its who else is in the files that are not named, thats whats hes hiding.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 1 points 15 minutes ago

I doubt that since the only person he cares about is himself.

[–] AZEngie@lemmy.zip 25 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I'm so glad this is in the news again. The MSM hasn't been doing enough of this!

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Agreed. Anything to push dumb fuck swing voters away from fascism

I'm hoping more tiktok trends about reading books gets to them and they get a bit smarter. Its truly my hope.

US culture revolves around the thrill of gossip. It's not about the thing itself. It's about high stakes drama.

It's like the Mythbusters gif where the truck never hits the bollard.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 6 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I think the allure of gossip is more applicable to general human nature than US culture in particular

[–] DrSoap@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Yea. Spill the tea!! My bestie went on holiday to Spain for her bday alone and I told her it was a bad idea. She has been calling me daily to tell me how lonely she is.

[–] uberdroog@lemmy.world 128 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Um..we all pretty much got it...like years ago..decades even

[–] CoconutLove@lemmy.today 12 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Dems were just waiting for the news to have maximal political impact when they announce their conclusion. Right before the midterms hopefully moves some voters and also sets them up to impeach if they win.

[–] Joeffect@lemmy.world 9 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

You mean impeach the president who had already been impeached?

[–] CoconutLove@lemmy.today 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah… if Republicans lose the midterms, Trump is a lame duck and some Republicans might be ready to break ranks. It’s a long shot, but it’s a chance. Either way, making the conversation in the media about Trump’s Epstein rapes is a good way to control the narrative up to 2028. Whoever the Republican candidates are will be trying to distance themselves from him.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

About a third of Repulican senators and all the Democrats would need to vote to remove him. That doesn't seem likely.

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 11 points 8 hours ago

Maximal political impact would be to convict him in court fair and square and when he refuses to show up to his sentencing, bring the firing squad to him.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 23 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

This was known after the FBI investigated in 2006. Alexander Acosta, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida made a deal with Epstein in 2007 to bury it. This was under Bush. Since then Acosta has gone on to work in the Trump administration. Whatever happens to Trump, Acosta needs to be brought up on charges for using his office to let a mass pedophile ring off the hook. Someone needs to look at his decision making and then try him and put him in prison where he belongs. We've known all about Epstein for 20 years now and very little has been done. But now theres a long list of co-conspirators and they need to be prosecuted.

[–] plz1@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 hours ago

It's been pointed out elsewhere, but it wasn't his decision unilaterally. AG would have had to sign off. So, both of them, at minimum.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 hours ago

Because that has historically worked out well.

[–] ninjabard@lemmy.world 319 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

This is no surprise to any rational human being.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 20 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

I, for one, am shocked. I just thought Epstein and Maxwell were two lone pedos with unrelated connections to teen modeling agencies and other known sex predators. Sure, the FBI found 300gb of data which later turned out to be dozens of terabytes, including video, which were later hacked, but the FBI said the data wasn't compromised, so no foul there. It's a shame he and so many of his clients died of totally natural or self-inflicted causes in such a short time afterward. I bet the discovery phase in court would have confirmed that his associates were blameless and that he was just maintaining a 20-40 terabyte collection of porn for personal use. The whole thing was so unrelated and random that they had to move Ghislaine Maxwell to a low-security prison despite her convictions for some of the worst and highest profile felonies in recent history.

But now there's evidence against another person whose name was all over the files and who has also bragged about inappropriate behavior with minors? Consider me shell shocked. Still, having been born yesterday, this is my first real day on earth, so what do I know.

[–] RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world 13 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Let’s release it too late to have an impact so we can say we did it and not piss off AIPAC

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 3 points 7 hours ago

Plus, it's not like fox news is going to cover this beyond parroting the party line.

[–] FullPenguin@lemmy.world 238 points 14 hours ago (5 children)

This won't change a thing. Republicans know Trump rapes kids, they've decided that it's not a deal breaker.

[–] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 2 points 2 hours ago

Some people plug their ears when they hear anything unpleasant. This is extremely unpleasant to read about, so it needs to be repeated over and over again.

I have read about it before, but I still can't really understand it. It is difficult to imagine how something like this happens without ever having been in such a situation. It's a natural defense mechanism to downplay the severity of it in an attempt to create the belief that it can be avoided if it should happen to yourself. That's were victim blaming cones from too. "It won't happen to be because I would have done this instead".

The more detailed descriptions help me better grasp the horror of it and how the victims got lured into the situations.

Democrats are a bit like Internet Explorer. Slow, painfully behind, only listening to the people's demands when a court orders it to, constantly forcing itself on you when you don't want it, and sometimes it's all you got.

As if the 10.000 (or more) blacked out mentions of trump in the files weren't evidence of his abundant participation...
Why is this all worded so carefully?

No mention ofcourse of how trump's pageant-business was used for and complicit in epstein's crimes.
