After Democrats’ historic victory, why is this how Hakeem Jeffries is responding?

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries isn’t interested in seeking impeachment charges against President Donald Trump.

Speaking on MS NOW’s Morning Joe Wednesday, Jeffries laid out his priorities for his party’s newfound leadership in the House of Representatives.

“The American people don’t want us to get even. They want us to get things done on their behalf because life is way too expensive,” Jeffries said.

I don't want them to impeach his ass unless they're a billion fucking percent sure they have the votes to convict his ass.

AND IF THEY DON'T HAVE THOSE VOTES, THEY NEED TO MAKE IT EXTREMELY FUCKING UNCOMFORTABLE FOR THE REPUBLICANS WHO REFUSE TO HOLD THAT ASSHOLE ACCOUNTABLE.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

he met with KUSHNER just a few weeks ago, he knows what hes doing.

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Nobody wants “getting even”. We want accountability!

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"The American people don’t want us to get even."

The American people beg to fucking differ.

[–] Stormy@thelemmy.club 21 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Holding them to the law isn't getting even. It's not revenge.

[–] seagull@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Me to the cops, when I'm caught doing 120 mph in a 35: "Look, maybe you want to get even at me by throwing me in jail, but what does petty revenge accomplish? Be the bigger man here, and for the good of us all, let's just move forward."

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 day ago

You're right, you're right

What really pisses me off is that even by denying his framing, we're helping feed it with the subtext "but is this pursuit of accountability tinged by a desire for revenge?", which subtlely invalidates peoples' legitimate rage.

Jeffries needs to sat a the back of the class. His red underclothes are showing. Trump, his gang, his family, his judges, his congress... needs to go and if Jeffries starts with his usual "oh it's okay we'll just all be friends" crap - we may as well have lost on Tuesday. He should have no say in the upcoming battle to free America from fascism and trump. Pussies and turncoats and money changers are not an option from this point out.

We hired y'all to do one thing - put America back together again and keep this hellscape from happening again. And that means clearing out the bad guys who've taken over our government. All the bad guys... judges, congressmen, senators, his family, his "fox and friends", his treasonous military leadership, his "police departments, ...". And it's got to happen pretty goddam quick else that pumpkin colored criminal will REALLY fuck up America... beyond repair.

So "yay - we won". When the gate opens and y'all hit the ground - you'd best be on it from day one.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

While there is a certain argument to be made about whether or not to pursue impeachment without the necessary Senate votes...using the phrase "getting even" is a rather disheartening way of dismissing the idea of holding these people accountable for their actions. That should be their top priority. The longer they wait to take action, the less likely they are to get results.

It's not "disheartening", it's outright dishonest. "Disheartening" is when your kid loses his soccer match.

[–] ViceroTempus@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

So let me get this straight. They shit on our right to due process, they throw people into camps without said due process, they kill people in broad daylight. But there is no priority for impeachment or justice....

So this is the rope I gave them to hang themselves with by voting blue. This is why I said voting was not going to be enough, and why we cannot stop putting pressure on our politicians even if some of the blue need to be taken to the wood chipper like all of the reds need to be,

Be fucking angry, this should be infuriating.

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There it is, folks. The Democratic party apathy we knew would come.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we have some check and balances back. But anyone who thinks things will turn around in January need look no further than this one comment.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Apathy or class consciousness?

[–] Mrkawfee@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Voting just lets peasants blow off steam so the elites can get back to business as usual.

Upholding the law is no longer a priority - federal legislator

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Even framing it as "getting even" is so goddamn disingenuous

Calling justice and accountability "getting even" is shit abusers say

[–] GuyDudeman@lemmy.world 79 points 2 days ago

Hakeem can fuck directly off into the sun.

Half of Congress would probably be perfectly happy caucusing with the other team. They don't care and tout whatever party line gets them paid. AIPAC and MORON-PAC (i.e. MAGA pocketbooks) have been very lucrative partnerships for them.

All I'm saying is it's probably all a dog and pony show for Jeffreys. He probably has no interest or stomach for a protracted fight when they can just coast and give some lip service.

Yeah it's always "take responsibility for your actions" whenever you do something they don't like (even if it was innocuous), but when you expect them to face repercussions for being narcissistic abusers, then suddenly it's "Don't be so vindictive! I can't believe you're holding a grudge. How petty. Revenge won't solve anything! Let it go, it's water under the bridge."

While new water continues to flow under said bridge unimpeded...

Anyone who looks at last night and says "voters want Democrats to work with Republicans" deserves a kick in the groin.

[–] BillionaireStew@lemmy.world 55 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, you don't understand. Hakeem Jeffries already made plans with Jared Kushner to move forward together so the nation can heal.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 days ago

Hakeem Jeffries made plans with Kushner to squeeze all he can for Israel over the next 2 years before he gets ejected at the primaries.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Justice, and an end to the corruption isn't "getting even". Get this guy out of there, primary him if you have to! Voters are done...

[–] Floon@lemmy.ml 20 points 2 days ago

Accountability, motherfucker! Accountability means hearings, investigations, and prosecutions.

Do popular, affordability-focused legislation as well, but accountability is part of what America told you to get on yesterday.

He's right, I don't want even. I want fucking annihilation. I want to drop the hammer on these chuds so hard they can't get elected until the next century. I want them to think twice about ever doing it again. I want them scared.

And you can do that while also making life fair and affordable. These are NOT mutually exclusive goals. In fact they are very much connected.

Do both or resign ya chucklefuck.

Nothing to see here. Just Jeffries parroting the talking points he received after Hus secret meeting with Kushner.

Chi Osse tried to primary him, but the DSA declined to endorse him because they felt Jeffries had basically infinite money to spend and that Osse kicking out the majority leader would have a damaging effect on the Democratic party.

And, yes, Mamdani and AOC were vocal in their support of Jeffries over Osse. Because we can't have nice things.

He's unfortunately liked in his district, so DSA opted to focus on other seats, which they were mostly successful with.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 42 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Hakeem Jeffries wants democrats to lose in 2028.

Trump is like a festering wound.

Jeffries would have you running around, treating the fever, the fatigue. Maybe managing the pain. All the other things. But he’s not dealing with the festering wound.

Ultimately everything we’re dealing with, that be would say is a priority is from the corruption and abuses of Trump, the republicans, and the oligarchs.

He can NOT be allowed to be speaker. He is beholden to AIPAC, not the people of America.

I can't speak for every US citizen, but as a citizen I can definitely say that while I don't want to get "even" I do want to see justice served. Those who have raped (literally) and pillaged their way to power need to be held accountable or we are just going to see more and more of this same crap in future administrations.

Of course, I fully expect that the pardon machine is going to be running at full tilt in the next few months and some may never be properly prosecuted, but there's plenty of dirt out there and lots of guilty parties, so lets start airing that dirty laundry, prosecuting, sanctioning, and generally making social pariahs of the fucks that got us into this mess.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago

A narcissist will tell you that being held accountable for their actions is the same thing as punishing them, it’s not.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why would the republican want to hurt or hold other republicans accountable.
