Donald Trump may have made the decision to launch the war that tanked voters’ support for the GOP and dealt them a midterm shellacking. But the historic losses are accelerating a push for someone else to take the fall: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

And the House could vote as soon as next week to impeach the Pentagon’s top leader.

Many Republican lawmakers and allies alarmed by Tuesday’s wipeout are moving swiftly to pin blame for the election results on Hegseth, arguing behind the scenes that he played a chief role in convincing Trump to attack Iran with no exit strategy — and no plan for managing the inevitable political fallout.

The knives-out campaign comes despite private acknowledgement from House and Senate GOP strategists that the party’s problems extended far beyond the war, triggering 2008-level losses that will take years to reverse. But for now, party leaders – and many in their ranks – remain unwilling to directly blame Trump for their woes.

It's not enshittification leaving my body I have a problem with. That's natural. It's the entering aspect that troubles me.

The second Trump croaks, they'll go rabid

[–] bunnybunny@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 hours ago

This, I’m really looking forward to this. They don’t to blame Trump (yet) so they’re going to try to take each other down

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

Maybe he should go hi-T and stop being trump's bitch.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 17 points 4 hours ago

Let's reach across the aisle to help that motherfucker get into prison.

We can't prosecute him domestically. Best thing to do is arrest him and fly him to The Hague

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 12 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Just hand him over to the ICC and call it a day.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 13 points 4 hours ago

I love this idea specifically because the US would then be acknowledging and ratifying their relationship with the ICC.

“I think he probably knows he’s dead but would like an exit sufficiently dramatic that it gives him a launching pad to run for POTUS,” one administration official said.

Dejavu, it’s like the Iraq war all over again where suddenly there’s not a republican to be found that was in favor of it once their grip on power slips

Matching the hat to the JPEG compression is really what sells this one.

[–] rumimevlevi@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 hours ago

And nobody will be held accountable

[–] artyom@piefed.social 4 points 4 hours ago

You know what? You wanna make Kegseth the fall guy and sacrifice him as an appetizer? I'm ok with this.

SecDef? I thought he was SecWar now? Next I suppose we'll be re-renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario?

This place already smells less like a diaper.

[–] Ariselas@piefed.ca 29 points 8 hours ago (3 children)

Nice, now lets sit back and watch MAGA eat itself for the next couple years

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 36 points 7 hours ago

No, never just sit back. Offer them forks and knives. Provide appetizers. Invite them over to dinner and then lock them in the cellar with only each other and a collection of machetes and spices.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 8 points 7 hours ago

The other way around, gotta sic the lions on them or they'll sort themselves out and come back with a vengeance. The Bush comparison is on point, and remember that Trump came 10 years after Bush. "Let them have at it" is the exact opposite of a good idea.

Who would've thought that the first people to eat the rich would be other rich people?

[–] abbiistabbii@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 7 hours ago

Lmfao they don't have the gall to blame The Big Man so they're throwing the Drunken Chud under the Bus.

[–] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 9 points 7 hours ago

Under the bus, under the bus, everybody goes under the bus…

[–] echo@lemmy.today 8 points 7 hours ago

He needs to be thrown out and then tried and convicted of war crimes... let him rot in some foreign country prison. Offer him to Iran, maybe.

[–] Radical_Socialist_t00t@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 hours ago
