Stax SR-Lambda, extraordinarily light

Oh boy, as a collector there are quite a few. Most are vintage or out of production though.

Also depending on price range too cause you got the Precise Ergo AMT, based on the absolutely whacky Jecklin Float (the whole jeckline float design is insane with the PMB floats being the best looking) uses an air motion transformer driver but costs around 800 euros if I remember correctly?

Then there's the TakeT headphones, also AMT with a design that can best be described as mad.

For something cheaper, try find a JVC HA-SW01, has a unique wood cone driver and an absolutely amazing construction, or the audio-technica ath-dsr series which actually uses a digital signal to the transducers. There's also the variety of limited editions, audio-technica is famous for it.

The more weirder tech like RAAL and the Sineaptic, both of which are ribbons, or just any electrostatic for that matter.

Of course there's the boutique and DIY headphones, ZMF, Darth Beyers, a pair of Darth Boobies will surely stand out.

Honestly the list is endless. There's unique and interesting stuff from all eras.

I managed to find what they are! They are indeed a variation of the Darth beyers affectionaly known as the Darth boobies

Some time long ago, there was a modder that would make custom headphones based on the DT880 I believe, beautiful hand made wooden cups with exquisite craftsmanship. May have been the darth beyers....

Anyway somehow the modder made them look a giant pair of breasts with a giant nipple right in the middle of the cups.

If you can find one, the Sony MDR-MA900 are extremely comfy. Also the audio-technica ath-ad909X as well. Extremely light and very comfy headphones

I haven't tried a lot of the unobtamium vintage, but I have tried a lot of very legendary stuff.

Most vintage electrostatics, proper electrostatics and not electrets, can still go toe to toe with even modern hi-end. Very, very few dynamic and planer magnetic hi-ends can beat electrostatics. The only one I heard that could was the HD800. Of course modern electrostatics can beat out their vintage counterpart but even then we're talking about the absolute hi-end.

As for dynamic headphones? There's a few I heard that definetely still earn their legendary moniker. DT-48 for instance was back in the day an EXTREMELY expensive headphone yet even a 60s pair can beat out most modern totl on resolution, detail and utter ruthlessness, albeit at the expense of sub bass and soundstage.

Most of the legendaries in my opinion still deserve their place in the best of all time. Especially the Japanese with their bubble era insanity.

They could just be regular 3.5mm mono plugs but the tips came off. I recall that some cheaper and older plugs have a similar construction to that where the tip would be screwed on tightly rather than a solid tip on some more higher end plugs.

I've been thinking a lot about headphone pads and I've came across a variety of materials from genuine leather to velour to clarino and Alcántara, but never wool?

I wonder why? And I'm not talking wool as in an itchy sweaty but wool as in those wool suits and those luxuriously comfortable wool seats in certain cars. It breathes very well, doesn't get too hot or cold, whickers moisture and I presume has sound absorption properties rather than reflection like leather or pleather, which could help in reducing any unwanted sounds and vibrations.

So why not wool?

V6 is already one hell of a good headphone. A lot of the headphones you mentioned have a very different sound signature to them except maybe the V900HD. I can definitely recommend the CD900ST as an upgrade to them.

If you don't mind older headphones, the SA3000/5000 as well to my ears is CD900ST on cocaine and still remains one of my all time favourites.

If you don't mind EVEN older headphones, the original CD900 might catch your attention. They're the father more or less of the V6.

For more current offerings, the CD900ST as mentioned, you might also be interested in the audio technica equivalent of the SX1a which is also terrific.

Of some I haven't really heard, there's the M1ST and Victor HA-MX100.

If you really want the ultimate however, any of the Stax Lambdas, even the vintage models, as well as the vintage SR-X mk III are similar to the V6 in tonality

ATH-W5000, I have never seen a headphone so polarising as them. Got a massive soundstage, closed back, made from wood and magnesium and a sound signature that is... coloured? It's not one easily liked, and unlike the HD600 which is considered an amazing deal, the W5000 was TOTL price for a headphone with rather mid fi technicalities

It's really dependent. Amps have more diminishing returns than headphones so jumping from a $50 to a $500 amp is going to be much less of an improvement than a headphone equivalent. On the other hand, with a good enough amp, there can be significant improvement.

Good enough being already in the 100-200 USD range
