I’m new to watching sports in general, but every week it seems like something around the league is dysfunctional. Whether it be players being fined for seemingly minor things (like cheetahs peace sign), or bad referee calls, or organizations giving up, or how the trade deadline was boring compared to other sports, it all seems like the nfl is not very well regulated. Is this how it’s always been, or have these problems gotten worse as of recent? I’m not trying to put blame on anyone here, but what’s the underlying problem? Also, do these sorts of things happen in other sports all the time?

Die hard NFL & Pats fan for a few decades now. I’ve always been of the mindset that more football is better than less, so I’ve always welcomed the Saturday games added to the schedule in late December.

But I have to say that today’s Black Friday game fell flat to me. So do the Sunday morning European games. For whatever reason that I haven’t been able to identify, I just don’t get up for them like I do the normal slate. It’s almost like I feel bad for watching them instead of doing normal shit. I’m good to watch the Thursday and Monday night games because the kids are asleep. Sunday afternoon is sort of accepted as time for football. But Friday afternoon and Sunday morning?? I get why the nfl is doing it. They’re wanting to expand viewership in Europe AND more importantly, dominate other time slots for ratings and future tv contracts. I get it but I also really find myself tuning out.

Which means they just avoided a horrifying statistic of having more 4th Quarter Non-Local Commercials in a NYJ standalone game then the Jets have scored in the 4th Quarter all season.

That’s all, Hackett is a good man and a horrible coach that has gotten the Adam Gase treatment due to his relationship with Rodgers.

With 102 receiving yards in a win vs the Jets, Tyreek hill gets up to 1324 receiving yards on the season, meaning he needs 676 receiving yards to be the first receiver to ever reach the 2k mark, an average of 113 per game for the rest of the season.

Are there anymore proposed franchise that almost happened but never occurred or is that all that we know of?

Yesterday I saw a post showing the average winning percentage of opponents defeated, and Carolina was on top of the list because they beat a 6-4 team for their ONE win. Obviously, and hopefully, the post was made tongue-in-cheek, but it did have me wanting to look at the data differently, so I decided to build on that and show total wins for opponents each team has defeated. I don’t know that this adds much different than regular schedule strength stats, or avg DVOA of opponent, but I just wanted to try a different view. For lack of a better team, let's call it WDs (Wins Defeated).

I’ll use Dallas and Baltimore as an example to illustrate the metric. Both teams are 8-3, but the quality of their wins are strikingly different.

In Dallas’ eight wins this year, their opponents have a .297 winning percentage, the equivalent of a 5-12 team over a full season. Here are the YTD records of the opponents they beat:

• 4-6
• 2-8
• 4-6
• 4-6
• 3-8
• 1-9
• 4-8

In Baltimore’s eight wins this year, their opponents have a .508 winning percentage, almost the equivalent of a 9-8 team over a full season. Here are the YTD records of the opponents they beat:

• 5-5
• 7-3
• 3-7
• 8-3
• 2-9
• 6-5
• 5-5

One small issue which I didn’t adjust for is that some teams haven’t had their bye yet, so not every team has played the same number of games. I could aggregate winning percentage, which would be more accurate, but would be a weird stat to digest. I kept it basic and just added wins. The point is simply to combine win volume with strength of wins.

In the chart below, the data is color coded by number of wins for each team, in case you want to compare against teams with the same record.

What stands out?

How about 7-3 Miami with only 22 WDs, while the other 7-3 teams have between 34 and 37 WDs.

At 4-6 the Jets have the 17 moat WDs by virtue of two of their wins coming against the Eagles and Bills. They lead all 4-win teams and are ahead of three 5-win teams.

Like I said, I don't know that it's any better than other schedule strength stats, just trying something different, although it's probably been done by others as well. Hope you enjoy!

I know it’s extremely rare for a defensive player to be considered, let alone a DB, but with his season so far he deserves it. I’m not a Cowboys fan by any means (usually root against them) but you have to admit greatness when you witness it. He’s the top ranked corner according to PFF just broke an NFL record for pick sixes and has the most INTs in the league. He’s so far above anyone else in his position plus he’s doing things that no one else has done before. Brady was right when he said the NFL offensive skill isn’t the same this year- there’s no one offensively other than Tyreek or AJ that are having rare seasons. Why are we sitting here pretending like we have to chose between this shitpile of offensive candidates when there’s so many defensive players playing at a high level. Obviously he has to finish the season strong but if he can finish with three to four more INTs (11total) it would be insane to me to pass him up, at the very least DPOY. Would love to hear some civil discourse on this.

Considering what CJ Stroud has been doing, I’m interested in seeing how teams handle drafting a QB high from here on out. Over the last 20 years or so, I think we’ve seen less and less patience when it comes to rookie QBs. There used to be a time where a guy could get drafted and would essentially be a clipboard holder his first 2-3 years if the guy ahead of him was producing at at least a Cincy Andy Dalton level. We’ve seen a lot more get thrown out to the fire early and they get a lot less leeway now than they did when I first started watching football 20 something years ago.

Still tho, a lot of fans still like to justify why their teams young QB is underperforming and usually point to factors that are out of their control (roster, coaching staff, front office, lack of experience)

And this guy CJ Stroud comes into the league with a franchise in perhaps its darkest days with a rookie head coach to boot, no notable weapons at the start of the season and he’s got them in the playoff hunt and hasn’t only been playing well for a rookie but he has been one of the best performing QBs in the league this season.

I’m already seeing a lot of rumblings on social media in regards to other young QBs that have yet to play like CJ has and some guys that had supporters before this season have lost a lot of them. It’s just hard to keep justifying poor play with external excuses when this guy isn’t in an ideal situation at all and making it happen.
