By Grabthar's hammer... what a movie!

[–] cdbsk@lemmy.world 33 points 5 months ago (2 children)

the best 'Not-Star Trek' Star Trek film

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 19 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Rated as in the Top Ten of all Star Trek movies.

[–] leftzero@lemmynsfw.com 6 points 5 months ago

Should probably be in the top five, frankly.

Can't find the clip, but Jonathan frakes told Patrick Stewart that he had to see Galaxy Quest, and that he had to see it in a theater with an audience.

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago (2 children)

And Patrick Stewart said he laughed harder than anyone else in the theater.

I can see him enjoying Alan Rickman’s role.

Here's the clip. The full cideo it comes feom is the next link but I’m not sure of the timestamp.

Please, if you can find it, post it.

”I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant.

”No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans.”

Thanks. In my mind there was a video. Silly me.

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

There’s more recent videos of him praising Galaxy Quest but not any video of that quote that I’m aware of.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 1 points 5 months ago

Thanks for looking it up!

I posted it in another reply to you just below. He’s never been on video saying exactly what you said but he’s been quoted in articles/newspaper interviews. Snopes has a good summary with links to the publications.

I'm not even supposed to be here! I'm just "Crewman Number Six." I'm expendable. I'm the guy in the episode who dies to prove how serious the situation is. I've gotta get outta here!

[–] grue@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Maybe you're the plucky comic relief?

[–] Retrograde@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)
[–] psyc@lemmy.world 19 points 5 months ago

This movie needs a UHD release

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 17 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'd love to see the original cut, there's clearly hints that there was more adult humour in there.

Also, if you're into that kind of thing, I highly recommend the "No Retreat, No Surrender" retrospective documentary.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I'd settle on having every cut of the movie restore the "Fuck that!" line.

[–] lemmy_get_my_coat@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Aw man, is that what that line was supposed to be? We were robbed.

[–] Snowcano@startrek.website 2 points 5 months ago (2 children)

They said it in the theatrical cut right? I’m not just misremembering that she said it in the theater, right?

[–] proudblond@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Even with it overdubbed, you can clearly read her lips so it’s possible our brains just filled in the blank.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

No, it was overdubbed prior to release to avoid an R rating. I believe the line is restored on the dvd release, but I'm going from memory.

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

As the owner of a DVD copy, I can confidently say it was not restored.

Basically the site keeps everyone's player in sync. Then you just make a guest name at the bottom of the chat so we can all chat during the movie.

[–] delirious_owl@discuss.online 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

How does this work, legally?

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Yarr matey.

[–] MacedWindow@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Great movie! Is this going to be a weekly thing?

[–] x0x7@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yes. Keep your eyes peeled.

[–] JacksonLamb@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Good idea. Haven't seen this film in years.

[–] drislands@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

This is a really cool idea -- wish I'd heard of it sooner!

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Reading Alan Rickman's book (comprised of his personal diaries). Very interesting bits about filming GQ.

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Buy the book for more. But, succinctly, Tim Allen is the egomaniac you expect and Sigourney is a bit of a diva too. Still, he enjoyed the experience

[–] Twinklebreeze@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

Is there air‽ You don't know!

[–] CheeryLBottom@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

That's not right...

[–] Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

I just watched this for the 1st time like a month ago! Fun little flick

[–] CheeryLBottom@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

One of my favorite movies!

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Thanks for the nostalgia kick :)
