I’m just gonna go ahead say he should have been like “I said what I said. You got a problem with that?”
Trump supporters are awful people. Period. Full stop. You cannot be a good person, or even a not-bad person and support trump. He is directly responsible for the deaths of over 1 million Americans. He is an insurrectionist. He is a rapist. A liar. A business fraud. A cheat. He’s blatantly racist.
If you support trump, you support a fascist. That makes you a fascist. It is as simple as that.
It’s obvious the not-actually-a-joke made Biden angry. Some things should make you angry.
The reason it is dumb is because, with a close race, getting your base out to vote is important, and this can be used as a rallying cry. It's just like insulting your opponent before some sporting even and it's used a locker room fodder to rule people up.
We learned in 2016 with the deplorable comments, which was accurate, was a mistake. This is a mistake too, no matter how accurate you think it is.
It can also fire up your base.

No one. Look how fired up you are after Trump's comment. This is my point. It was a dumb mistake for his campaign, just like Biden's is a dumb mistake for Harris' campaign.

Again, you're mixing up your feelings about how true the statement is with whether or not it was a good move for the campaign. These are two entirely separate things.

This flies in the face of all conventional wisdom. Campaigns are out canvassing heavily in swing states (I know, I live in one of them, among very politically active people who are doing it), with the intent of making sure people get out to vote. You seem to be viewing Trump supporters as some kind of borg who all do the same exact thing, but it's simply not true. There are people who are lukewarm about this and may or may not vote. You don't want to give them any ammunition to fire up these people to encourage them to vote. That's the whole point.
It might work that way, or help shutting up the people that say "Harris is the same as Biden"
It might also not be a wise strategy to insult the people you hope to change their minds to stay at home or vote for them. Every single vote is important.
Insult trump and his cronies but not the American people that you built your whole campaign around.

That is who trump voters are voting for. You cannot be a good person- or even a half-way decent person- and vote for that.
You do not get to make jokes about Paul Pelosi getting beaten in the head with a claw hammer and then get offended when you’re called a piece of trash.
You do not get to attack people at voting polls with a machete, or burn ballot boxes or intimidate voters and complain about being called garbage.
You do not get to vote for laws that prevent women from getting necessary, emergency medical care directly leading to their death, and bitch about being called a callous, shitty human being.
Any vote that gets lost because of this was never going to be voting for harris anyway. Undecided voters don’t exist. We know who and what the candidates are. We’ve known for more than a year. It isn’t that complicated a decision.

They're voting trump because they were convinced they are victims. Calling them names may make them actually turn out more because it gives weight to trumps campaign and their arguments they make.
It's tough to navigate this election, but fueling their emotions while their manipulated emotions have made them vote for trump in the first place, seems like an obviously bad idea, even for some idiot like myself.

Yes, but the fake outrage is just insufferable. For some reason the Democratic Party has to be perfect or pearls will be clutched; meanwhile the "liberal media" and the Enlightened Centrists (TM) are just fine with it if the Republican Party is literally flinging their feces (hey, they spread it around at the Capitol during their terrorist action on J6, so I guess we already got there and this isn't even really all that hyperbolic) and lighting their farts on fire while not talking any policy whatsoever....
It's so stupid how one sided the media is being. Trump openly admires Hitler, blatantly tries to overthrow democracy, and gets the benefit of doubt or not even any coverage at all by most major outlets. Biden calls somebody garbage and it gets treated as a serious scandal.
And the context was they called PR garbage for no other reason than not being white enough; and he was responding to that.
Like, no. “Have you seen trump supporters” is a fair criticism to that.
I don't think it was a gaffe at all. It may have been a Freudian slip, but he said what he meant. I'm disappointed he back tracked and Harris supported that, but such is the game of politics.
