Summary

Jake Paul defeated 58-year-old Mike Tyson in an eight-round boxing match, with unanimous scores of 79-73 and 80-72.

The bout, widely criticized as a “stunted show,” highlighted Tyson’s physical decline, including issues with sciatica, a stomach ulcer, and knee problems.

Tyson, once a feared heavyweight champion, struggled to compete, while Paul’s performance lacked effort and authenticity.

Fans, initially supportive of Tyson, grew disenchanted, booing by the final rounds.

Tyson dismissed the fight’s significance beforehand, rejecting the concept of legacy as meaningless. The event was seen as a cynical, contrived spectacle.

Now I can go back to never thinking about Jake Paul again.

Until he runs for office or Trump puts him in his cabinet.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 1 points 36 minutes ago

There is a non-zero chance of this happening, unfortunately.

The dude is 58 and in better shape than the vast majority of people his age and he just made 20 millions.

He won

The main event really undercut the earlier fights.

Serrano vs Taylor was fucking amazing. Despite Taylor’s dirty moves, she couldn’t keep Serrano at bay for a single second. I can’t believe the judges robbed her of the win.

[–] MattTheProgrammer@lemmy.world 6 points 1 hour ago

Serrano has earned my respect. I'm not a regular fan of the sport and this is the first time I've watched a fight in over 20 years. How she didn't get the W is beyond me. Her trainer was dropping bombs in the post match interview though, I wouldn't fuck with that dude.

I thought it was cute all the people saying Mike was going to murder him. As a 45 year old boxer I am pretty exhausted after 3 minutes. 5 rounds later and I'm ready for a nice cup of tea in an armchair sitting by the window. Time catches up to us all.

[–] lychee@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Mike though? How is there any universe where this wasn't scripted

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 7 points 1 hour ago

In this universe he is nearly 60 and his opponent was in his 20s. Don't get me wrong, I still wouldn't fight Tyson because I'm 40 and in, at best, mediocre shape but we can acknowledge that he is well past his prime.

[–] warm@kbin.earth 6 points 1 hour ago

No shit, all these social media showmatches are just grifts. Anyone who thinks they are real fights are loopy.

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 15 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I'm glad no one got hurt. The other fights on the card were better. Main event was boring and predictable. Tyson was slow and off balance. Paul threw and landed 2x the punches Tyson did. Not a match that would convince a non fan that there is something more to the sport than punching.

[–] Anissem@lemmy.ml 6 points 59 minutes ago

I was really hoping to see Jake Paul get crippled.

[–] Noite_Etion@lemmy.world 63 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (1 children)

The only thing real in this conflict was the paychecks at the end.

[–] Wogi@lemmy.world 19 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Oh boy did we buffer.

We buffered like it was 1999.

[–] Lenny@lemmy.zip 10 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

Surprised they didn’t wheel him out too

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

He was still buffering

[–] Anissem@lemmy.ml 1 points 56 minutes ago

Hopefully after a bit more CTE Jake Paul will just kill himself. Maybe we can watch that live on Netflix too

Young rapist defeats old rapist in "which rapist can punch harder" contest.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 29 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

which rapist can punch more

ftfy

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 21 points 3 hours ago (17 children)

I'll take your word for it. I've never really understood the whole idea of boxing being entertaining in the first place.

[–] QuantumSparkles@sh.itjust.works 2 points 35 minutes ago (1 children)

I can say at least I understand martial arts, even if it’s not my thing, because there’s so much artistry in that and it’s a full body thing whereas boxing is basically just too dudes punching each other. Hit me up when the fighters start using Instant Transmission and Special Beam Cannon and I’ll give it another look

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 28 minutes ago

Yeah, martial arts makes sense to me. Even (real) wrestling makes sense to me.

I'm sure boxing actually does require a lot of skill, but it just looks like two guys punching each other to me.

[–] Wogi@lemmy.world 7 points 2 hours ago

Skilled athletes are entertaining to watch. Guys that know how fight and do it well, at least. It can be a highly technical, highly skilled competition. Some people are just there to watch two adults beat the piss out of each other. Which, to be fair, is how the sport started.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Same. Even the match before with the girls seemed like it was an incredible fight for boxing, and it was still just as entertaining as a rock ‘em sock ‘em robot game.

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Back in the 70s and early 80s boxing was incredible. Ali was still a contender and Spinx, Fraser, Sugar Ray, Marvelous Marvin, Holmes and Durán lit up their weight classes like a Christmas tree.

Then Tyson entered the sphere and blew the doors off. He was fucking amazing to watch back then. His precision and power were something we'd never seen before and we were in awe.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 1 points 24 minutes ago

I honestly think UFC ruined boxing.

Which rapist can haphazardly throw an occasional swing in the vague direction of their opponent, at least half the time at least being close enough to theoretically connect.

Ftfy.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

For millions of dollars.

[–] eatthecake@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Someone beat a rapist. Yay.

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Surprise! It was another rapist.

[–] eatthecake@lemmy.world 0 points 1 hour ago

And lemmy celebrates whichever rapist they favour. Sick.
