Trump promised to raid Chicago on Tuesday yet I have seen a single news story about this since it was first brought up Sunday. It is now Wednesday. So did they do it or was it just more hot air from Trump and co?

it didn't happen, or it did. it shouldn't happen or it should have. whatever trump's base thinks the most convenient thing to say, they'll say it. and anything else is fake news.

[–] TheBananaKing@lemmy.world 82 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Look at the weather, your whole damn country is getting raided by ice.

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

California here. We’re being raided by fires right now

Is this finally the release of
A Song of Ice and Fire: The Winds of Winter?

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 8 hours ago

These viral marketing campaigns are getting out of hand

"A song of Ice and Fire: The Death of America" - FTFY

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 49 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Same thing that happened to the "migrant caravan"

Just a bunch of 'here's this for your racism serotonin" bluster from talking heads that have no real acumen

[–] sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz 29 points 17 hours ago

No, we shouldn't just dismiss this. My friend is a teacher in Arizona and she had some sort of agents come to their school and pull kids out of classes. Allegedly they were going to use them as "bait" to get the parents, but the school was being tight lipped about it when the teachers were asking questions.

Dismissing this shit the first time around is how so many children's whereabouts are still lost in the ICE system today. Don't dismiss this as just conjecture just because the news isn't reporting it.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

But those roving gangs of Antifa attackers definitely happened. /s

[–] SolacefromSilence@fedia.io 5 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Weren't they just pardoned?

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 5 points 17 hours ago

I forgot about that lie.

They said they called it off because of “media leaks” basically

Edit: https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/post-inauguration-ice-raids-starting-tuesday-sources/story?id=117827142

"We're reviewing any plans in Chicago because of the leak," Tom Homan told ABC News, adding that the news reports may have potentially put officer safety at risk.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 15 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Media leaks?

While trump publicly announced it was going to happen?

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago

leaking confidential information is one of his kinks.

[–] flicker@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 11 hours ago

They know this shit is unpopular enough that if they don't do it completely by surprise, they'll be met with resistance.

Cowards.

[–] Kit@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 18 hours ago

A Hispanic neighborhood in Pittsburgh was raided today. First time I've ever heard of ICE in the Burgh. I wonder if they reallocated the personnel meant for Chicago to Pittsburgh.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 18 points 22 hours ago

Homan: I mean yes technically I'm the leak but still

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 24 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

Everything these idiots say publicly is bluster. They don't have the resources for these deportations they are planning. There aren't enough ice agents in the entire country to clear out the undocumented immigrants in one city. It's illegal for the military to assist. It's illegal for them to try to force local PD or sheriff's to assist.

Edit: There are around 20,000 border and ICE agents. Most of those are assigned to the southwest border. The NYPD has 33,000 officers, Chicago PD has about 14,000, LAPD 9,0000. Even if you somehow got 10,000 of those border and ICE agents in one city without hurting border operations, it would take them years to find and deport all the undocumented immigrants in just one city.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 13 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

And that is exactly why they'll be recruiting Red Shirts. Been saying this for years.

Just a month or so ago Steve Bannon said on his podcast that there aren't enough boots and they would have to draw on "local volunteers" to fill the gaps.

Do what that information as you will. As for me and my house, I'm armed and trained. Scared shitless, but I will shoot back.

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Hmm, so there's opportunity to volunteer so that you can help sabotage...

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

You need to understand that none of the people in power actually want this stuff. It's a waste of tax dollars and undocumented immigrants keep wages low for the robber barons. This is all performative. Think of it like a magic show, they want people looking at the card they are waiving around while the other hand picks our pockets.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 11 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I am well aware. But you can see how this turns into an excuse for Red Shirts, Committees of Public Safety and the like?

"We just can't keep this under control! Sign up at your local MAGA office to help save the country!"

This shit is nearly as old as human civilization.

[–] Machinist@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It's totally possible. Like, historically the parallels are spooky.

I don't have a good feel for the likelihood yet, too early. We may end up with camps, we may just have another four years of slide into shit before the next possible crisis.

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

I believe there will be at least one camp and at least some people rounded up. Sort of how some pieces of the wall were erected so they could take photos and claim they've done something. I also think, like the walls, there will be for-profit companies that will eagerly build infrastructure that (hopefully) never gets used.

On more thought... I would consider upgrading your description of the historical parallels from spooky to fucking terrifying.

[–] d0ntpan1c@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

They may not be happening in Chicago, but they are very much happening in Phoenix. I'm not informed enough specifically to say whether Chicago or any of the other listed cities were just a feint or if they have been delayed for other reasons. Its also likely that many state and city officials are doing their best to put roadblocks in the way right now.

As someone who lived in Phoenix during Arizona's SB1070 raids, don't expect news coverage to keep up. Even outlets trying their hardest to stay on top of it are under-resourced, and it can take time for civilian footage from the scene to get vetted. It'll likely get better the more awareness is spread and once the strategy Trump's administration is more well understood.

[–] weegee90@lemmy.world 14 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Also a good idea to keep an eye on places like Bluesky, Lemmy, Pixelfed and (I know, but larger user base still) Reddit for civilian footage. Democracy dies in silence and the administration knows that. We can't necessarily rely on traditional media to be allowed to cover this stuff. We need to rely on each other in whatever side channels we can communicate freely on.

[–] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 21 hours ago

There was some action across the country, one of which even ended up with a border office getting killed. Honestly, I think the extreme Chicago cold kept them at bay. To my understanding, these raids are being done on a voluntary basis by the agents, there's no order forcibly deploying them. For all the shit-talk the yokels in Alabama and Georgia can muster, I don't think any of them wanted to deal with windchills of -20f.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 8 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (3 children)

The administration isn't going to move that fast because they can't, not nearly enough boots. Plus, they know damned well they can't flush 13,000,000 slaves out of the system without crashing it.

The idea is to scare them into submission. Not sure how you get illegal immigrants more submissive, but that's the plan, put them in their place. And then?

Maybe they're aiming for literal slave labor, à la concentration camps? I honestly can't see the end game. Yes, illegal immigration is a problem for the US. (Ban incoming!) Yes, it's a problem for the immigrants. (We don't talk about that.) But I'm not seeing the MAGA end-game here.

Before someone pops off a one-liner meme answer, think on it first. What's their end game? "Illegal" slavery seems to be working fine. Why disrupt that and crash the economy? Yes, hate of the "other" gets votes, but what are the real players playing?

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Honestly I don't think any of this has an end game. If they were not able to continue using immigration as a scare tactic then they've lost the main weapon in their arsenal. They don't ever want the " immigration" problem solved because it's what keeps them in office.

This is all theater it will fail, it was never intended to succeed. when they lose power they will use it and say that Democrats somehow ruined it for them.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago

You have to specify who "they" are. There isn't one "end game", there are dozens if not hundreds of various plans from power brokers that all have competing interests. Sure some of their plans might overlap, but there is no "end game".

Right now there is massive in fighting because Elon wants cheap H1B Visas and the true believers want to completely shutdown any new entrants and remove every immigrant.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 1 points 13 hours ago

I'm guessing it involves prison labor being cheaper than immigrant labor.

[–] desktop_user@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 17 hours ago

global warming (trump has more important minorities to attack)

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 3 points 18 hours ago

“Ice” lol. It’s an acronym, ICE.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 7 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

i just dug around a little to see before seeing your post. apparently nothing happened yesterday in chicago.

so either it was too cold, or they realized there wasn't enough 'easy' targets in that city to make a big enough media splash.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 7 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah I did some digging too didn't find much. So much for largest immigration raids in American history. I told my brother that all bullshit to get votes. I'm sure there will be some but nothing my brother and dad had been bragging about.

Either that or they are waiting to build the camps first. Still not ready to drop my guard.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 5 points 20 hours ago

They said it was because of "media leaks". Translation: we don't want anyone looking at how we conduct the raids or who gets hurt, we just want a really big perp walk afterward.

[–] JTskulk@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

"Browser is not supported" Guess I'll just let others die then lol

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 4 points 20 hours ago

ice asked its friends to hold them back and they did.

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I believe there were rumors based on comments about Chicago in response to the mayor's comments, but no official statement saying that Chicago was the first sanctuary city to be descended upon.

It is my understanding is that at this point they have directed ICE to start going down their list of illegal immigrants that have committed serious crimes. My assumption is that they have to get a strategy and assets prepared to do large scale raids, which they could not have formally done until after inauguration. I also assume they will be weeks or months away from large operations and they will be gathering a large mobile task force that will hop between cities while local offices are gathering lists and information about subjects that will be targeted.

I expect Chicago to be the first city to see a large operation just as a "fuck you" to the mayor, but other sanctuary cities that have said they won't cooperate are also prime targets.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 5 points 20 hours ago

They directed ICE to target people who are accused of serious crimes, but they also told them to round up anyone they run across during those searches. It's not going to be very long before they're just indiscriminate raids.
