After silently judging as I scrolled through posts riddled with hot takes from 5 years ago I thought...

What are your hottest takes about how the NBA will look 5 years from now? (Go wild with your guesses, nobody will be judging you......)

My hot takes are

  1. Josh Giddy will be in the MVP race
  2. The Booklyn Nets will have either made or won the finals due to Bridges and Ben Simmons showing out
  3. LeBron will continue to refuse to retire, while still putting up 18/4/4. And will blame it on wanting to play with his wife's uncles barbers daughters stepson 17 years from now.

Curry wins 2 more rings easily cementing him over Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, Bird, LeBron, and of course Magic.

[–] SkinnyLever@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’ll still exist

There will be no repeat champions.

Next 5 years champions.

Celtics. Sixers. Mavs. OKC. Spurs.

Wemby will be pretty good

[–] DadDong69@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (9 children)

I think history will show no matter what era it is, it is extremely difficult for lanky 7 footers to stay healthy.

[–] Languard00@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (7 children)

Facts. Just 7 footers in general tbh (Cries in Blazers).

This is why as a Celtics fan I want nothing to do with Porzingis. Some fans are excited for his potential on this team but my concern is pretty valid and simple: we have literally never seen anyone in the history of the NBA that looks like Porzingis help lead a title contender. Every single lanky/goofy big dude over 7'2" inevitably has injury/durability issues and they never hold up to the demanding workload of a regular season + a long playoff run.

And he's the highest paid player on the team, so if he goes down it's not like they can replace him with a decent backup. If he goes down the team is fucked.

[–] Languard00@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Smart take, but do you think maybe his role as not the #1 star player on the team might mean he can rest and avoid injury a bit more? My boss (a celtics fan) describes him as more of the really good horse instead of the unicorn... so maybe he could thrive being 2nd/3rd option? Still think you guys have an insane team this year

[–] DrownedInBeans@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

i dunno i wouldn't bank on that. he's one of only 2 solid bigs on the roster and the other is 38-year old al horford. the team doesn't have guys like grant williams and smart to do all the dirty work and banging down low with dudes like embiid and giannis anymore. don't see how they can get away with just resting porzingis and minimizing his role. he's the highest paid player on the team, he's kinda expected to have an impact night-in and night-out.

also "just keep him healthy for the playoffs!" is something fans love to suggest before a season, but things never play out like that in real life. aside from the 2022 warriors pretty much every single championship team has all their rotation guys play like 80+ games (reg season + playoffs). porzingis needs to get reps in and build rapport with his teammates, and then plays pretty much every game of an intense 20+ game playoff run. if the celtics go to the finals this year then it'll be the most demanding and impressive thing porzingis has ever done in his career.

I admittedly read nothing after the Giddey MVP thing, but to answer your question:

Luka and Jokic win their third title together as the Nuggets beat the Celtics (now featuring Giannis) in a thrilling seven-gamer.

[–] prongs17@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Obviously they will still win because they are good players but Luka is about as bad a fit as you can imagine with Jokic.

Extremely cold take: time repeats itself. LeBron gets redrafted in 2030 after his mind gets implanted as an AI body

[–] wichita_gator@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (6 children)

After KD declines with age or retires, the Suns find themselves in a similar situation to Portland with Lillard where they are still competitive but not contenders because Devin Booker and the FO refuses to have him traded in the name of loyalty. By the end of the 5 years, Booker is the franchise leader in many statistical categories.

[–] Languard00@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Genuinely a really thorough and realistic take, could definitely see this happening tbh.

[–] Bubuy_nu_Patu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (4 children)

KD will join the bucks to complete his hardest road tour

[–] wichita_gator@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (16 children)

I could see him signing a one-year deal with OKC now that they have cats he can win with.

I’m here for the KD redemption tour in OKC

[–] SolidGoldToast@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah even 40 year old Durant will still probably be a decently efficient 20-something point per game scorer

Luka Donic is flourishing as the face of the franchise that plays home games the world's most famous arena.

[–] J_Dabson002@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Wow I knew we were building a new arena but I didn’t know it would be world famous

Shortened regular season games, a lockout, and a new NBA city

[–] Languard00@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Will the lockout be to influence shortened regular season? Or do you think something else will cause another lockout?

[–] Modzh@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (15 children)

Giannis hugely declines due to injuries/athleticism falling off, still not having made an improvement on his jumper/freethrows/post game

Ya he kinda has a Russ trajectory incoming. Obviously Giannis has a higher peak, but I see his decline to be a similar graph

[–] Languard00@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Could see that tbh. Do you see Dame and Giannis working out together over the next few years though? A Giannis decline after 2 more championships will be glossed over, but if the decline is instant I could see a lot of drama amongst media

[–] Modzh@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think once he becomes 31-32 we'll see him declining, as it stands they have 2 or maybe 3 seasons before Dame starts declining, seeing as he's already 33

[–] Languard00@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I see that, could also see dame taking a lesser scoring role but still contributing as a facilitator. Guess his defence will become an even bigger liability at this point

[–] downinCarolina@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

During the bucks preseason games it seems like they default to “give giannis the ball” rather than “let dame take it at the top of the key and direct the floor” so it’ll be interesting to see what they do with an elite point guard if they don’t trust them with first touch.

Lonzo comes back from his injury and ends up signing 1 or 2 year deals with teams as a 6th man before ending up on the Hornets with his brother. He then retires after playing in Charlotte

Embiid will be close to retirement

[–] durmduke@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)
  1. Wemby eats Shaq dipped in ghost pepper salsa and becomes the greatest rapper of all time.
  2. LaMelo gets married and takes his wife’s surname, Dribble.
  3. LeBron is still in the league as his son’s personal mental health and diet coach. Neither wins an award for best father-son duo.
  4. Seattle finally gets a team: the Seattle Thunder.
  5. Kevin Durant is found alive after missing for several years. They find him on the back of a Greyhound. He’s mildly coherent but his fingertips are singed off and he keeps mumbling about Westbrook and dynasties.

Sixers will lose on purpose again

[–] coacoanutbenjamn@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Jokic will be the only superstar still on the same team

Giannis will be out of Milwaukee, Tatum out of Boston, Steph retired, Ja out of Memphis, Luka out of Dallas, etc

Stars just don’t stick to one team for their careers anymore

Do what feels right. There's no point in getting caught up about the semantics

[–] AggressiveRegret@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (22 children)

The warriors are going to ride the big three to the end and be absolutely terrible for 2-4 seasons because of it. Then get horrible lottery luck and be pretty bad for another couple of seasons.

Hard to imagine there’s going to be much optimism when 30, 11, and 23 hang it up.
