Apple says it is working to fix its speech-to-text tool after some social media users found that when they spoke the word "racist" into their iPhones it typed it out as "Trump."

The tech giant has suggested the issue with its Dictation service has been caused by a problem it has distinguishing between words with an "r" in them.

"We are aware of an issue with the speech recognition model that powers Dictation and we are rolling out a fix today," an Apple spokesperson said.

However an expert in speech recognition told the BBC this explanation was "just not plausible."

Peter Bell, professor of speech technology at the University of Edinburgh, said it was more likely that someone had altered the underlying software that the tool used.

A former Apple employee who worked on its AI assistant Siri told the New York Times: "This smells like a serious prank."

Props to the intern that snuck that in.

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 58 points 2 months ago

They need an award for getting that done.

Seems like autocorrect doing it's job!

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 32 points 2 months ago

Duck yeah it is

[–] colmear@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 months ago

I think autocorrect has some things mixed up. Not every rectangle is a square, but every square is a rectangle …

Did an intern sneak that in or did the model itself decide to do that?

No intern, it was St Luigi doing the gods work

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Models don't decide.

The AI is learning on its own.

The closest we've ever been to actual AGI.

[–] singletona@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

I hope our digital children can learn to forgive us for the mess we left them.

It pulls a synonym—what’s the big deal?

[–] elric@lemm.ee 47 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Apple fixed it. It now autocorrects "rapist" to trump.

Yeah, can't have it be incomplete.

[–] Viri4thus@feddit.org 44 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If it ain't broken, don't fix it, stupid!

[–] TheFogan@programming.dev 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well, it really is hard to explain to someone

Trump is very trump.

[–] Goun@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 months ago

I'm not Trump, but..

Is there any combo with orange skin that would not give you Trump as an answer?

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

"Orange skin and in a committed relationship with Bert" "orange skin that is removed before juicing"

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I wanted to say Annoying Orange, but he is not a convict.

[–] pelley@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago

I hope they just never fix it, just be like "yeah 🤷🏽it must be the R's???? We are working on it"

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 months ago

For once, SIRI got something right.

[–] Armand1@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

I couldn't actually believe this article was real. Figured it was a comedic post like that previous one about switching to Cyrillic letters in the US .

[–] rocky1138@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 months ago

They're the same picture

[–] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 months ago

Seems accurate to me

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

General intelligence has been achieved?

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Why can‘t my autocorrect do a proper job like that but instead comes up with the trumpest Trump? That‘s so Trump. I hate it.

[–] AbsoluteChicagoDog@lemm.ee -3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

"AI generates a series of characters" is not news
