Anyone who mentions Hillary and her emails after signalgate and this fucking shit needs to have their ass whooped.

This admin is such a bunch of amateurs. School kids in mock governments would take their jobs more seriously and do a better job.

Hilary managed her own server and wiped the contents after getting a subpoena. Unless I'm missing something major, these are very different things

Nazis don't give a shit about being hypocrites.

They're open and proud about it, they fundamentally believe that they're right because they believe they're right, and you're wrong because you don't. Shouting buttery males or pointing out leopard face eating is like throwing a cucumber at the terminator and expecting a reaction. They don't give a shit. They absolutely will not stop ever until The Right People^tm^ have all the power to the exclusion of everyone else.

What matters is consequences. What are we going to do about it? We've had nearly two decades of high roading and it's gotten us to a demonstrably worse place. Neither leftists nor the people the republicans intend to harm can afford for us to take the high road off a cliff. Stop expecting anything but hypocrisy or trying to show them how wrong they are. Stop letting them lead you around by the nose with reactions. Start focusing on what we're going to do, start focusing on leading us somewhere new.

Are all the people in the White house technology challenged? Seems super risky to be giving these people that much power with sensitive information in a world with serious cyber threats.

I wouldn’t be trusting a bitcoin with that crew.

[–] whotookkarl@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

They are just as inept and uneducated with communications technology as the Senate, but they also have the ignorant hubris to do what they think is right instead of listening to security experts because to them they are wealthy and politically powerful so they stupidly assume they are competent and informed enough to override the consensus of experts. They do the same thing with hurricane projections, vaccines, scientific research and education funding, reproductive rights, etc.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 3 points 14 hours ago

Keeping inept morons and malicious actors out of the White House pretty much falls to the political parties and the voters.

Unfortunately being a scumbag asshole is a huge positive for a lot of Americans now.

Given that Google probably trains their LLMs based on the content of people's Gmail inboxes, how long until a prompt convinces Gemini to spit out Waltz's emails verbatim?

Or, could use this profile:

  • Former military officers
  • Graduates of Virginia Military Academy
  • Married men in their early 50s
  • Men Living in Washington DC
  • Fathers of teenage daughters
  • ...

Then microtarget ads that will be shown only to him. I can guarantee that a guy this bad at OPSEC doesn't know how to use an ad blocker.

(And if you're a North Korean hacking group, you make sure the ad has a malicious payload that gives you control over his computer.)

Copy and pasting from a similar thread - tldr is that lapses in infosec are fucked because it's a direct attack on YOUR security; and any official info running through other-than-official channels is fucked because that's an attack on your rights as a citizen by circumventing FOIA or accountability. When that happens, you should be pissed off regardless of which side of the aisle the culprit resides on.

Anyway...

I keep seeing Hillary's server brought up to highlight the red team's hypocrisy, but there's some introspection to be had for us as well on that topic.

Hillary's email server was one of many stepping stones on the path of increasingly fucked infosec. Now, the vast majority of neanderthals foaming at the mouth over her emails only gave a damn about it because of the (D) next to her name, but those idiots getting angry at it for the wrong reasons doesn't mean it wasn't a big deal.

My perspective on all that when the story was first breaking: I was fairly new e-nothing junior enlisted medic in the USAF. The closest thing to classified info I ever dealt with was 'confidential' medical shit covered by HIPAA, and like people's social security numbers. That's it. But even with zero-access to military secrets, at the absolute rock-bottom of the chain of command, I still had to take lengthy infosec courses every year (or every quarter? idr) to ensure I knew how to identify and properly handle classified information. Fuckups in infosec are NOT tolerated: like if I took a single page of classified info home without authorization, that'd be a court martial / potential jail time / stripped of rank / dishonorable discharge level offense. Then we have a fucking Secretary of State - someone who handles classified info all the time and should be a subject matter expert on the do's and don'ts of it - running her own shady-ass server away from the prying eyes of FOIA, claiming to not recognize classified indicators?? Then before anything could be done about it, we got the whole bleach-bit and hammer-to-harddrives scene, so some nice destruction of evidence as the cherry on top.

100% we should have crucified her.

Just like we should have crucified the dipshits before her using private email platforms like gmail or some shit to send or receive official / classified communication. Every one of those fuckers knew better.

Then Trump happens and makes everything prior, Hillary and all, look like fucking j-walking compared to the scale and blatancy of his crimes. 'Crucified' doesn't even begin to describe what needs to happen to that fucking traitor.

...but the dismissiveness regarding the email server does kinda strike a nerve for me - she fucked up BAD, and we dropped the ball by not holding her accountable, as that left the door open for dipshits like Trump to continue the trend of worse and worse infosec.

Again, it's peanuts compared to Trump - I hate writing shit like this for even the flicker of a possibility of drawing a false equivalence. There is no equivalence here. But I really wish we'd collectively change our tone about handwaving the 'buttery males!' shit because it is hypocritical to do that and then get pissy about the red team's conceptually-similar-albeit-orders-of-magnitude-more-severe fuckups.

At the end of the day, we should expect our leaders to do their job and do it correctly. If they don't, then get angry - it's your security they're playing with. None of them get the benefit of the doubt, regardless of which color their campaign stickers are.

[–] frezik@midwest.social 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

Here's the thing about that email server: it was standard operating procedure for the White House at the time.

Email starts to be used for official communication under Bill's administration, but everyone is still trying to figure out this Internet thing back then. It was standard for the Secretary of State to run their own email server all through the Bush II administration. Hillary was simply following what was already established. It was only when John Kerry took the office that this was changed to bring their email server under White House IT staff control.

Which is what should have happened within a few years of Bush II's first term. As someone who has managed their own email server before, it's hard to setup an email server that works correctly. It's even harder to set it up in a way that doesn't immediately become a spam gateway and security hazard. As soon as the government was getting a handle on this Internet thing, all staff email servers should have been run by government IT directly.

That isn't on Hillary alone. It's a decision that crossed three different Presidential administrations and both major parties.

FOIA was followed, though. The DOJ got plenty of Hillary's emails by way of FOIA.

[–] OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Ok but you skipped over the part where her technician deleted emails after getting a subpoena

Edit: also fact check, no it was not standard for any other Secretary of State to use their own server. Hilary was the only one to do that: https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2016/mar/10/hillary-clinton/hillary-clinton-said-my-predecessors-did-same-thin/

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A weather report can be classified. Something that's been published in the NY Times might be classified.

Something the Secretary of State writes themselves might be classified. Even saying "I was talking to Prime Minster whoever last week" could be classified even when there's a photo of the Sec State standing next that Prime Minister on the front page of that country's biggest newspaper.

There is no risk if someone stamps something innocuous as classified, but there's hell to pay if something that's sensitive doesn't get stamped classified. So a lot of shit is labelled classified when it doesn't need to be.

Not all classified information is about a military operation that's set to kick off in a few hours.

Hillary Clinton was very thoroughly investigated and the classified information was a big nothing-burger. Or do you honestly believe the Trump administration gave her a pass because they're benevolent?

running her own shady-ass server away from the prying eyes of FOIA

It's illegal to use government property for campaign purposes. Obviously Clinton was working towards a presidential campaign (she was working towards it her entire life) so the laws necessitated her to have emails related to that not be on a government server (government property).

Sorry, Hilary's emails wasn't anything. You were just told that over and over again until it started to sound like there might be something to it. But it was nothing.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A weather report can be classified. Something that’s been published in the NY Times might be classified ... could ... could ... could ... could ... could ...

Not all classified information is about a military operation that’s set to kick off in a few hours.

...and? Not all classified info is benign shit either. I didn't personally assess the contents of Hillary's server, or Bush's server, or all the idiots using private email, but I'm not going to give any of them the benefit of the doubt and assume their specific infractions are harmless. Fuck that. They know the rules, they need to follow them.

Hillary Clinton was very thoroughly investigated and the classified information was a big nothing-burger. Or do you honestly believe the Trump administration gave her a pass because they’re benevolent?

Nothing ever happens to any of these dipshits. Every fucking administration gives the one before it a pass for this shit, and that's what makes me so mad about it this. It needs to stop.

It’s illegal to use government property for campaign purposes. Obviously Clinton was working towards a presidential campaign (she was working towards it her entire life) so the laws necessitated her to have emails related to that not be on a government server (government property).

It's also illegal to store classified info on the non-government machine you're using to run a campaign. Classification aside, is it really too much to expect her to know the difference between work related vs private communication? Most people have a pretty solid hold on that about 5 minutes after accepting their first job that requires them to use a company/agency email...

Sorry, Hilary’s emails wasn’t anything. You were just told that over and over again until it started to sound like there might be something to it. But it was nothing.

No, I was active duty when the situation was first breaking, and joined the DoD in a collective facepalm and angry "this shit again?!" cuz if any of us did it, we'd be court martialed.

You may not want it to be anything, and you might try to rationalize that by assuming a best case scenario or contrasting it against fuckers like Trump who are orders of magnitude worse, but that doesn't give Hillary or anyone before or after her a pass.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Classification aside, is it really too much to expect her to know the difference between work related vs private communication?

There can be information that's classified, then a reporter finds out about it and it gets printed in the NY Times. But that information is still classified. So you can simultaneously be discussing something that's public knowledge and also classified.

But you're upset about things like that happening because you were on active duty and probably getting Fox News blasted at you 24/7 in the mess hall and you got suckered by it. You don't want to admit you're a sucker (as your President says you are), so you're going to go on pretending that you have some special knowledge that no one else has.

Hilary Clinton is a smart woman and Trump and his gang are a bunch of morons. Your country is fucked and it's not going to get any better until y'all can start admitting that you got scammed.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

There can be information that’s classified, then a reporter finds out about it and it gets printed in the NY Times. But that information is still classified.

Correct.

So you can simultaneously be discussing something that’s public knowledge and also classified.

Semi-correct. If you're in a position of knowledge about the classified info, you don't discuss it in earshot of people without a need to know whether ir not it's public knowledge. You just drop a bunch of "no comment" or "I can neither confirm nor deny" or "that's classified, I can't say shit."

Fox News blasted at you 24/7 in the mess hall and you got suckered by it.

I was blue-leaning when I joined, and blue-as-fuck by the time I separated. I had a healthy hatred for Fox from day one. Working in an on-base hospital, the only time the news was on was in the breakroom and I was pretty quick to change the channel and then lecture the dipshits who were in there before me about putting political shit on at work. The second time I ran into that, I bitched up the chain, and they threatened the entire department to have the TV removed from the breakroom if it became an ongoing issue. Still popped up occasionally, but honestly that shit's way worse at the civilian hospital I work at now than anything I ran into in the military. In all fairness though, medical USAF is probably the bluest slice of the military there is; and I live in the cousin-fuckingly-deep-south right now, which is home to the reddest slice of the healthcare community there is, so contrasting the two definitely isn't reflective of either 'whole' that either of those slices belong to.

...I got most of my news from Reddit at that time; which isn't to say I'm above getting duped like anyone else, but one of the things I like about these kinds of link aggregates is that you can get multiple perspectives from breaking news at a fairly quick glance.

(as your President says you are)

I mean, they did get me with the healthcare and college. Also fuck that guy.

so you’re going to go on pretending that you have some special knowledge that no one else has.

What? Did you even read my rant? Half my take was on the basis that I specifically didn't know shit - I was an e-nothing medic - but even as an e-nothing medic I had to take regular training to ensure the infosec shit was absolutely drilled into my brain. It was common knowledge even for folks like me who don't handle classified info at all. The whole point was to contrast myself against someone like a Secretary of State whose knowledge about how to handle classified info should blow my dumb ass out of the water; but that even my dumb ass could recognize the incredibly blatant fuckups.

Hilary Clinton is a smart woman

Correct. But that doesn't mean she can't make bad choices.

Trump and his gang are a bunch of morons.

Semi-correct. Trump and his gang play an extremely convincing gaggle of village idiots, and while there's certainly no shortage of sincere stupidity, there's also a degree of planned and jaw-droppingly well executed malice coming from those traitors, and I refuse to dismiss it as just stupid people blundering their way through a series of mistakes that just so happen exclusively fuck up our own country and allies while strengthening our enemies. The existence of these shitstains is the most convincing RL parallel to the Darth Jar Jar fan theory I'm aware of: so long as you can play a convincing-enough dumbass, you can get away with a ridiculous amount of evil.

So, I'd encourage you and anyone else reading this to focus less on the stupid and more on the malice. The stupid is distracting; the malice highlights Trump and his circle as domestic enemies to the US.

Your country is fucked and it’s not going to get any better until y’all can start admitting that you got scammed.

My country is fucked because two-thirds of us either actively wanted an enemy of the US to be our president, or were so undisturbed by that possibility that they couldn't even be bothered to color in a quarter-inch rectangle to stop it. Most of us are some combination of stupid, apathetic, or evil; and I have zero faith that's going to change any time soon. Idk what country you're in, but pressure your representatives to put and keep the pressure on us - first step to us getting our shit together is for the 'find out' stage to hurt bad enough to make a lasting impression.

Seems like they're going to have Waltz take the fall for all of this. He must have had Jeffrey Goldberg in his contacts list to add him on the Signal chat, and Trump probably thinks he's been in contact with Goldberg and therefore not 100% loyal to Trump. Getting rid of Mike Waltz over using Gmail improperly would isolate the impact to just him, rather than everyone on the Signal chat.
