I keep reminding my clients, you ( me - or - the service provider) are not the HERO in the story, the customer IS and they are on the hero's journey ( Joseph Campbell's book a hero of a thousand faces - hero's journey framework can be applied to every good movie story / script) We are but a Sherpa guiding them along their progress path(way) 💯 👍

It depends on the business model and customer segments. In the case of B2B, you must close the gap in the market by offering solutions or simplifying existing ones. In the case of B2C, focus on people's needs. In the case of C2C, people will sell what others need within your solution.

I sell a sub niche of a sub niche of a niche of commercial truck parts that are required on all commercial trucks and are pretty universal. I stumbled upon the product line almost by accident 7 years ago while auditing parts at a commercial truck repair shop I worked at. These parts I started with sell for like 50 cents a piece all the way up to $42. Shops buy them in the hundreds. I couldn't believe that I'd found something that had not been sourced to death or ever imported only made in America.
7 years in we control the market now for North America. The first four or five years I was scared to death that the two major global manufacturers would just give the parts away for free and kill us but they never saw us because we never advertised. I simply cold called every shop that we have.
I enjoy business I don't really care about what I'm selling as long as it's moral legal and ethical. I tend to search out and focus on blue collar or industrial parts or widgets that keep things running and are consumable. Every few years I find another niche and I research the hell out of it. If it meets the qualifications that I look for then I pursue it.

I feel like at some point you should start creating versions they differ for customers that use things in different ways.
Don't focus on a single majority customer, start catering to two, three, or even five of your customer usage types and let each preserve the feature they most use and build to their usage patterns.
Especially in software.

When you sell what you want to sell, you sell passionately. When you sell what people want to buy, you make money. Finding a balance is key.

I sell a service I strongly believe in. Many other people are good at providing this service. I am good at finding people who want this service and directly speaking to their pain points in a way my larger competitors are unable to.
C) What I'm able to sell.
There's lots of things people want to buy, but I either can't crack into that market (mostly due to economies of scale) or they don't want to buy it from me (strong existing supplier relations). So I sell what I'm able to sell. I find niches where I can gain a significant enough advantage that I can profit.

both... started with what the people want to buy... I made good money out of it and paid me enough to actually sell what I want to sell.
Hmm that's definitely a very interesting question but quite depends on because you may sell something that only few people need so you'd be making a huge profit selling to them although most of the people don't need
