Listen, i’m not saying his time isn’t coming to an end at the elite level. But one poor season in 23 years does not call for some of the revisionism occurring here lately. Arguably, the defences he’s still producing (2022, 2021, 2020) have kept the Patriots from rebuilding properly. It isn’t easy in this league to escape from 8-8 hell without a franchise QB.

“Brady made him”. You can use whatever stat you want here, but let’s use the most basic one. Points allowed per game. Of course there are influences here. Time of possession, special teams, ability to generate turnovers. But at its most basic level this is what determines the result of a game.

Brady had 20 seasons as a Patriot. He had a top 10 defence in 17 of them. In 3 super bowl victories, the Patriots played 3 of the top 15 offences in NFL history. 01 Rams, 16 Falcons and 18 Rams. 17 points, 22 points(pick six), 3 points. Even throw the record breaking 04 Colts in there, 3 pts. If we change to PTS per drive, he still has 15 top 10 defences!

Manning had 4, Rodgers had 3, Brees had 2. All three had great ball security and time of possession.

Is Brady the GOAT, yes. His consistency in clutch moments puts him ahead of the likes of Peyton and Rodgers. Did he make Bill the greatest defensive mind in history, no!

Brady record when scoring 20+in the playoffs: 32-4. Rodgers is 12-9 in this statistic for a direct comparison.

Average finish in points per drive among notable QBs

Brady: 9th

Rivers: 15th

Peyton: 18th

Rodgers: 18th

Brees: 20th

Mahomes: 20th

And we are trying to pretend Bill didn’t give Brady a significant advantage over his peers? Another 2 super bowls as a DC.

I feel like the only people dogging him only watched football since 2014 or so hence all of the "without Brady he's bad takes"

Oh, BB and Brady found plenty of “significant advantages” for each other over the years

[–] dogi8@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

LEAVE BILLY ALONE!!

[–] ScarabGod420@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Remember when the Pats blocked a dolphins kick and everyone overreacted the other way and said he had revolutionized special teams? Shits embarrassing both ways haha

This sub: lol “regress Pat Mahomes to the mean” what an idiot

Also this sub: If you throw out 35% of the Super Bowl era Bill Belichick is an average coach.

ESPN: Coach Prime to replace Bill Belichick?

[–] Aerolithe_Lion@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It’s not 1 poor season. It’s 4 middling-to-poor seasons since Brady retired.

Winning a ton of championships can get you a lot of slack, but how much before you decide to actual compete again with the franchise? 5 middling-to-poor seasons? 7? 10? Should we throw away an entire decade of Patriots football?

4 seasons is a long time to rebuild a team that shouldn’t have needed a lot of rebuilding outside the QB. Belichick gets double the blame because he’s both failing as the HC and the GM at the same time.

I can’t believe the discourse coming from some of the Pats fans

A good NFL coach is a super super unique asset and we’re treating the GOAT coach like he’s a parasite

[–] MoreRatzThanFatz@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’m just salty he whooped our ass for so long so yes, I’m hating on him

[–] vin1223@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah dude is clearly a defensive genius, drafted Brady, and put together some teams that could actually survive without Brady if he was injured or suspended. Maybe the league just became to qb centric he hasn’t been able to draft one

[–] SovannRoussard@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Man people truly are overly sensitive on Reddit

[–] deandalecolledean@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

One of the best defensive minds of all time, but he’s not a good GM unfortunately

[–] Whiston1993@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

“Bill wasn’t good it was the players that he brought in and coached that were good”

I swear well be getting unironic “bill didn’t score a single TD. He did nothing” takes by the offseason

Where can I see the list of average points per drive for QBs? I’m a Chargers fan who isn’t sold on Rivers to the HOF but his ranking there is impressive.

“Brady made him”.

Literally haven’t seen anyone seriously claim this. Feels like you’re making up things to argue against.

[–] EctoRiddler@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

People were shitting on Shula his last few years. People just like to minimize coaches accomplishments if the team feels sluggish or not living up to their potential. In the case of the Pats they hitched their fortunes to a subpar QB and subpar WRs.

Michigan fans are rubbing off on Patriots fans this week.

Where’s our notorious BB hater at?

[–] ThirteenValleys@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

If Bill Belichick is a bad coach then there's no such thing as a good coach.

He is literally the greatest defensive coach of all time and I don't think even the biggest BB haters can contest that.

But for anyone who thinks Belichick is some chud who was totally carried by Brady, I'll ask this: what would a great coach have done with the GOAT? Win 6 Super Bowls? Make it to 13 Conference Championships? Have a win percentage over 75%? Belichick did all of that.

As a pats fan, there's no point in defending Bill. It's his job to take the hit when things go badly, and it's the players fault for all of the success. It's part of the gig, and Bill said it himself... performance is job security. You learn to tune out the noise, anyone can have an opinion or a podcast these days and call it journalism.

[–] Practicalaviationcat@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (8 children)

You don't have as much success as the Pats did with a bad coach. It's just impossible.

He deserves to be slandered. The guy had coaching life before and after Brady that is mediocre at best and woefully overrated. At this point, it was more Brady than BB.

Further, my biggest issue is Bill has no coaches that have impacted the game. Every other great coach has a real tree with a philosophy. lambo, Shula, Lombardi, Walsh, Reid, etc. Bill is the only one who has had assts do Jack shit. That is the biggest indictment of his system.

[–] Whiston1993@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

People acting like the only stat that matters is Bills record without Brady is the coaching equivalent of the Mahomes “if you arbitrarily ignore his good stats he’s actually average”.

[–] Holiday_Extent_5811@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Bill took Matt Cassell to an 11 win season. Matt Cassell.

Reality is they kept pushing back the cap and bad contracts while Brady was there and it took time to clean that up. He whiffed on the QB which is killing him. Wouldn’t be shocked if he trades or signs a vet QB. Shit might see DJ there next year

[–] Dismal-Title9996@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He would be swooped so hard by other teams if this happened. That dude is a genius, and one bad season is not a signifier his system isn't working. He's made mediocre coordinators better, mediocre QBs better, and unless he's retiring he will always have a job somewhere.

[–] ShogunNamedMarcus_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Bill is still the best HC in the NFL imo. Unfortunately, he has one of the worst GMs(himself) in the NFL providing him with subpar talent. Brady covered for this on offense, HC Bill covered for this on defense, and combined, they made for the GOAT dynasty.

Brady got the last laugh by going to a stacked, well coached team and winning another Ring, while Bill takes all the heat for not winning with a shit team. But let Bill have his pick of teams in the NFL to go coach next year, and I'd be willing to bet he makes it to the Super Bowl in this unprovable hypothetical. The Patriots play better than they should on paper, and every Bill coached team will, but that only goes so far. Until he steps down as GM, or hits on the next Tom Brady, Bill is going to continue to struggle to put up wins.

[–] cfowler42@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You can’t give him as much credit for the defense when you sink as much draft capital into it as he does

[–] Papaloxs@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Also the AFC East was historically bad for the last 20 some years so the Pats almost always got 6 easy wins a year.

[–] lunchb0x93@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Bill the GM is bill the coach’s worst enemy.

[–] fortyonejb@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are you trying to pretend Brady didn't give Bill a significant advantage over his peers?

What you've proven is that Belichick is an elite defensive mind. What you haven't proven is that he's actually a good HC. Paired with the GOAT QB, his defenses won them Super Bowls. Without the GOAT QB he's a losing HC with an elite defense.

The fact that on Dec 6, 2021 Billy B beat the Bills by throwing three passes cements his legacy as the goat coach

I believe Brady also had one of the best offensive lines in the league for most of his career

[–] AreEuclidinMe@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Like others have said, it’s both. One thing people don’t look at enough is how Brady’s talent effected how good those patriots defenses were. Seriously. Look at the history of Patriots draft picks during the Brady era and you’ll see they were predominantly defensive players, including many many key franchise pieces. Brady’s skill allowed the patriots to focus more on defense in drafting and FA.

[–] Early-Retirement-22@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think that the Patriots should keep him until he dies. It will help the rest of the league.

[–] Cruciify@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As a Giants fan, if the Pat's kick Bill to the curb, I wouldn't be opposed to seeing him back in New York idk if he'd be a long term solution but he can definitely steady the ship.

[–] manhiddeninthewoods@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Agreed the disrespect is genuinely baffling to me, you don’t see anything like this with pop during the spurs recent bad years for example. Idk wtf is going on

[–] Mojo141@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My issue with Belichick isn't that he can command a great defense. It's more on the personnel side. He needs a GM who is a better drafter and who will challenge Belichick when he wants to draft a 4-5 round player in the first, for example. And not let him have his dog on camera during draft day.

[–] captainbonkalot@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The guy won a Super Bowl playing Troy brown at cb, we can end the argument about Brady carrying him with that point.

Bill really is an all time great, but I think he needs to finally hand the GM position off to someone else. He built a legacy, but the offense has only gotten worse every year for Mac Jones since his rookie season.

While Bill is great with defense, his lack of offensive tactics or talent to mask his weakness of offense has been bland and mediocre. He can still work with a GM on getting defensive players but someone else needs to draft/scout for the offense.

[–] Throwaway2154387@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Points Scored is a bad metric to differentiate defense from offense. EPA is much better. Scoring 3 points after an int gets you to the 97 yards is not good. And conversely a defense stopping a drive that started at the 1 due to a great punt isn't a great defense. Use EPA per drive.

[–] itakeyoureggs@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Tbh.. a very good qb makes those around him better. So if you stack the D .. where the qb cannot make the D better you have a great team. Brady doesn’t win as many games without the top ranked D he had because it’s hard to win shoot outs week in and week out. Ex: pat mahomes right now with a top ranked D or burrow with a top ranked D are such terrifying teams. Ravens also. Because they have a QB that can make the players around him on O better. Those are the kinda teams that maintain success.

NFL reddit having terrible takes is nothing new, but calling Bill Belichick a bad coach is clown shit for sure. He's such a good coach that he made other teams think Patricia and McDaniels were worth head coach positions.

[–] VoxSerenade@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Bill is an Average coach borderline one of those people who are meant to be coordinators and not head coaches. He just happened to luck into Brady and has been coasting since dude can't coach a full team to save his life.

[–] Scrilla_Gorilla_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Belichick is a great coach, but he's not a take vendor. Since he spent his entire career treating the take writers with disdain, he shouldn't be shocked these same people aren't being overly charitable to him now. That's just common sense.

Personally he seems like a pretty miserable dude, and as a hater of nepotism I'm really enjoying watching his sons fail.

[–] Brendynamite@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

System QB narrative has flipped lol.

"Is he good, or is he a system HC?"

[–] TheEssentialQuality@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

From a coaching perspective, spectacular, From a talent scouting standpoint, I think he should have gotten help a long time ago.

Reason being, he is constantly drafting these random players past the consensus talent evaluation that not only the general viewing public with little to no organized football experience, but also active NFL GMs and Scouts. I think with the talent of other teams he could still be making the playoffs year after year. But with the departure of Brady they don't get the proven free agent recruits they used to, and they just don't draft at the same level as other teams.
