MODERATORS

I'll start!

  • Fiio FA9: my most critical listening sessions and overall best sounding. Also one of my remaining wired headsets that make work calls sound fantastic. These rarely leave the house with the exception for work travel, no intention for mobile listening with these.
  • Sony WH-XM5: these are my go to for work travel/ out in public when I have a backpack to lug em around. The ANC and mic quality are 10/10. Sound out of the box was meh but after using the commonly used Reddit EQ, their sound is fantastic without any of the distortion. Never seen a set react to EQ so well without any distortion. Having great sound wirelessly has been a big QOL upgrade for me. Love having LDAC with high quality streaming.
  • Fidelio X1's: were my daily driver's for about 7 years until the FA9's. I now use them when the family is asleep, I click em into my BTR3 and connect to the TV, and get a cinematic experience. Their sound signature and soundstage make shows/movies/games MUCH more enjoyable when I cannot use the home theater setup. Otherwise, for music, they're a little too easy going, I prefer something on the warmer end of neutral. Lacks the texture and resolution of the FA9's.
  • Google Pixel Buds 2: These are my grab and go's, my daily beaters that integrate well with my pixel. Meh sound quality, decent call quality, sweat resistant. Most likely will upgrade to the WF-XM5's as their sound is becoming evident as a dramatic downgrade to my other sets

Meze Empyrean for daily drivers at home. Use them for work, gaming, TV, movies, and surfing the web. When I'm in the office I use focal elagia because they sound really good with an EQ, are good at cutting out surrounding noise, and don't leak audio at louder volumes. I also got them cheap at like $400 since they were being discontinued. But sometimes on the weekends I'll use them when I want to listen to something from my phone and don't want to be tethered to my PC. I used to use my momentum 3 for that and travel but the focal connected to my qudilex 5K sounds much better than them so they sit in a drawer most of the time. I'd like to get a new pair of headphones to compliment the Empyreans one day but everything I'm looking at is expensive.

I use my CFA Orbits and Koss PortaPro wireless at work, and Koss Portapro wired at home. They're just so lightweight with good sound quality, it's a no brainerr for me. I pull out my other cans and iems on a monthly basis. I haven't been listening to much music so haven’t needed the higher fidelity cans. Only been listening to audiobooks or watching anime. The games I've been playing don't require sound placement and can just listen through speakers or cans mentioned earlier.

HD800s : When I am free to sit at my computer and use my set-up to get the best quality music I can get.

EL-8O : When at work (work from home) or when I want to lay in bed and just run them from my phone. It has a built in DAC so can run them quite easily. Though they are really easy to drive.

Random IEM + Kinera: Office, meeting.
Smoll IEM: Sleep.

9999 db speaker: Home.

[–] Jas0nta11@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Senn HD650: Daily drivers for home desk, insanely comfortable, excellent for both music and gaming.

CA Solaris: Portable musical paradise for work/travel. Custom-mold silicone ear tips were needed aftermarket for all-day comfort, and their able to isolate from an impressive amount of external sound.

Bose SoundSport: Honestly, my (biased) all-time favorite. Perfect for exercise, sports, and commutes, they are acoustically transparent, so I can still hear everything around me. Very resilient (perfect for harsh days on the ski slopes), and excellent sound quality. I've sworn by these for years and they still amaze me with detailed, smooth sound and deep, clean bass. (Though bose discontinued all their wired products, you can still find plenty listings on ebay. IMO their wireless stuff just doesn't come close to what these can do. It's sad really)

[–] Cheeky_Dot@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
  • S12 pro - At the office with a Q5k
  • Linkbuds s - when i dont feel like taking the s12 and or q5k
  • T1 gen 2 - Gaming and music - Replaced my hd 700

Am still looking for a well build bassy/rumbly planar though, since ive now sold my DCA Aeon Flow (which sounds meh). I have tried a bunch from hifiman, but the built and comfort are meh on the lower end models. And i dont want to spend arya money on something from them. Might give Audeze a go, if/when i can find me a second hand one for "cheap".

[–] Nusara@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Buds 2 - Travel, gym

B2D - office, school use

HEK Stealth - when I really want to listen and feel the music

HD58X - gaming and general use at home

[–] eatingdonuts44@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Senn hd800s: use daily, 80% of music listening, all of gaming and movies/shows

Meze 109: use daily, music when I want more bass/fun, any song will sound good with these

Beyer DT770: closed back, mostly for gaming when somethings too loud for open backs

Shuoer S12: only IEM I use, usually listen to it in bed before I go to sleep

Senn MTW2: whenever I do something and dont want any wires

I need to figure out if im going to keep the 660s, but should really sell the 560s, m40x and the Tin T4 I have laying around, but theres some sentimental value so idk.

[–] wagninger@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

AirPods Pro for podcasts, never music

Focal Utopia for relaxing and listening in the background

MM-500 for critical listening or when more guitars are involved, the Utopia is not really great at that

Empire Ears Odin for listening on the go or when headphones seem too uncomfortable

[–] TheOptimusPrice@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Will rank mine in most usage down to least usage:

Truthear Hexa - not had them long but majority of time listening right now is these. I struggle with sibilance due to ear issues and versus the other earphones I have now or have had, I find these the most comfortable and least fatiguing.

Hifiman HE400SE - An easy recommendation in the price bracket for everyone I know that wants a great sounding and comfortable experience at home. Without EQ they are fantastic but with a good EQ to your preference they come alive.

Nothing Ear Stick - A weird pick in this sub but when I don’t want my ears blocked or to have over ears on, these are really solid. Sound better than I’d expected but not comparable to others on the list.

Sony WH1000-XM4 - Purchased to replace some Sennheiser 4.50s that broke days before a 13 hour flight. Sound was disappointing but that Reddit EQ recommendation is a game changer. I don’t travel much for work since COVID but when I do, these are in my bag, probably joined now by the Hexa as the default out of the house choices.

Shure Aonic 4 - the most I’ve spent on IEMs on about 10 years. The Yellow foam tips make them super comfortable and I used them for a lot of hours but now I’m finding the highs to be too piercing and uncomfortable for me.

KEF M100 - Had them years, don’t know why I have not thrown them away. They don’t sound great, they have a rubbish cable and they kill my ears. Long may they remain discontinued and forgotten to history.

[–] imdabesss@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

LCD-3: Used mostly at my desk when I am browsing or working or doing schoolwork. Has a very relaxed yet detailed tuning that sounds good with a lot of music I listen to. Replaced my LCD-2c for this purpose, but don't really plan to sell my 2cs.

He-1000v2: Recently moved into the bedroom to listen to on tubes at night or when i'm reading or relaxing.

Airpods Max: Sold my XM4s to get these as those would hurt my ears after a while. Mostly used when travelling or if they're cutting the grass outside.

Beats Fit Pro: Honestly, my daily drivers, if i'm out and about or working in the office, these are in my ears 90% of the time. Similar to Airpods pros, they just stay in my ear better.

S12 Pro/Z12: Mostly in use on airplanes or at my desk in the office if i want to have a little more detail in my music.

[–] thesilvermoose@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

DT990: at home for more 'fun' kinda headphones, metal/deathcore (pretty much anything heavy) music

HD6XX: Working from home daily drivers, casual background/anything-goes type of music listening

XM4 earbuds: commuting to work, working at office

CONSIDERING DT 700 pro x or the 177x GO to solve my 'at work'/WFH over the ear isolation headphones

[–] cp-photo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Sony EX800ST - purely listening to music. Sony WF-C500 - when I’m on my phone and in bed. Bowers & Wilkins P5 Wireless - my old daily driver, relegated to home use. Beyerdynamic DT 770 - office use, casual listening, video editing. Etymotic ER2XR - field monitoring. Sennheiser IE 100 Pro w/ IE PRO BT adapter - backup pair for on-the-go use.

I actually use the EX800ST as a daily driver with the FiiO BTR5. I don’t mind not being completely isolated. Makes me less anxious.

[–] liukasteneste28@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Sony mx3 - commute and audio books.

Hifiman arya v3 stealth - home listening for relaxing purposes

Kiwi ears quartet - serious gaming

Ie600 - home and office listening and casual gaming.

[–] obiwanshinobi87@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I have:

Arya Stealth v3: desk eye candy. Will probably keep for PC gaming as needed

64 Audio A12ts: barely used last few years, may buy some Bluetooth wireless modules to increase usability in the future

LCD-X (2021): probably selling soon

Shokz Openfit: use at work or out and about

Apple AirPod Pros: use at home in bed or around house

Sony WH-1000XM4: barely used anymore, too big

Ananda: bought for my wife’s gaming PC, which she barely uses. Probably sell soon

HD650: OG love, modded. Probably keep since can’t sell but barely used anymore as well

I used to use headphones exclusively. Note that I have a home theater/stereo listening station, don’t really have use for headphones anymore.

All pair with Wm1z or wm1zm2, depend on battery and my mood

AuR Audio Aure: Gatekeeper, if the tested Iem does not sound better than this then i wont buy, also it serve me while i doing work, work wonder on male vocal like Andrea Bocelli.

JVC - FW10000: Vocal, jazz, chinese music,... , my go to iem when i want big soundstage and good female vocal

IER - Z1R: The iem when i want to go nut, work well with Epic music, Rock and instrumental music

Currently eyeing on the final A8000 to complete my collection of 2018 - 2019 japan best iems and then im off.

[–] Fred011235@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

lcd2 - metal/hard rock (home)

hd800 - everything else (home)

monarch mk2 - music on the go

galaxy bud2pro - podcast/audiobooks

[–] banecroft@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Airpods pro - daily commute driver
Sony XM5 - Work, lots of noisy people
HD650 - Home use, running this with a tube amp makes my piano sound amazing

[–] PlurPonce@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Sundara - at the desk, will reach for this 60% of the time if it's quiet

K702 - other 40% when it's quiet. Such a drastic change in sound sig compared to sundara. Fun to A B test

7hz timeless - daily drivers connected to q5k, used for travel, work, or home when environment is too loud for open backs. Almost always reach for these

Monk+ - "open" experience without headphone hair. Rarely used.

Aria - sitting there as a "backup"

[–] ApfelRotkohl@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
  • AirPods Pro 2: my most used earphones. I would say it's one of the most comfortable earphones with the best adaptive ANC (transparency mode, conversation detection). I use it for commuting (mostly turning on just the ANC), working while listening to podcasts, and Teams meetings. The sound quality is good enough, Apple did something with EQ that boosted the bass level even at lower volumes (Equal-loudness contour) plus Dolby Atmos with Apple Music is superior to Tidal's Dolby Atmos.
  • AirPods Max: I work night shifts from time to time and live in an apartment. I use this when watching TV so as not to bother my GF and neighbors.
  • Thieaudio Monarch MK2: My end game level IEM. Strangely enough, I bought this for the novelty of listening to good mastering tracks like movie soundtracks, and music from Chesky Records in general.
  • Moondrop Variations: Daily used IEMs, I use this for listening to Lofi and everything on the PC.

Some gears that I recently sold: Hifiman edition XS and HD800s. I personally think they are great headphones, just that the trade-offs vs IEM and dedicated speakers are not worth it.

[–] Crellis86@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Focal Clear OG: Home at my desk.

Focal Celestee: Home in living room or bedroom.

Sony IER-M9: Work at my desk.

AirPods Pro 2: Travel/phone calls/social media

I have a few others like the HD-6xx that I don’t really use much at all anymore. Mostly just those 4 these days with the Celestee getting the least amount of use.

[–] Phil_D_Snutz@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Abyss Diana TC: Critical listening at home or work

Hifiman Arya Stealth: Critical listening at home or work

DCA Aeon 2 Noire: Home listening when my neighbor or wife are making noise.

Thieaudio Legacy 4: Gym

Thieaudio Monarch: Gym

Moondrop S8: Travel by plane

Ultimate Ears CSX 18+: Travel by plane

Galaxy Buds 2 Pro: When riding motorcycle or e-bike

Audeze MM-100: Hasn't shipped yet

58X, DT 1770 Pro, PS-500e, HE-4XX, MDR-V6, Airpods Pro: Collects dust in closet

[–] Dries-v@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Sundara - music Dt770 - gaming with modmic Momentum - work, meetings Sony linkbuds s - commute/mountainbiking

[–] Driftyboi12@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Headphone, typically ran through an XD05+ or iFi Go Blu:

6xx: at the desk when working.

IEM's, typically fed through the FiiO BTR7:

Dunu SA6 mk2: Daily drivers for everything when home.

Penon Fan 2: Pairs nice with the Dunu's as a complimentary set. Warm and cozy in sound so I typically throw on some jazz or soundtracks with this one. Doubles up as my commuter/travel set.

[–] MiddleEmphasis6759@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Blon BL-03: My first IEMs, and my daily beaters for 3 years. Wore them everywhere while doing anything. Fun, bassy sound that I still enjoy to this day.

Etymotic ER2SE: My second pair, primarily used them for critical listening and for their isolation. Still the most “detailed” set I own imo.

Jabra Elite 7 Pro: Picked these up a little over a year ago. Primarily used for their convenience and ANC for exercise, though they sound pretty nice too and are probably my best or second best fitting set.

7Hz Zero: Bought these last year while they were getting hype as a budget killer. Nice, balanced sound, though they don’t see much use nowadays, as they don’t really beat any of my other sets in their respective niches.

AirPods Pro 2: Picked these up earlier this year after transitioning over to the Apple ecosystem. Great features, and probably the best or second best sound quality out of the sets I own. I use these the most nowadays because of how convenient and feature rich they are on top of their nice sound.

[–] J_C_515@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Galaxy buds pro 2: for work and in the gym, general out and about stuff.

Clear Mg: At home desk, whenever I want intimate listening.

Ananda: were my go to headphones but kind of took a back seat when I got clear MG's, still do have a listen when I want a bit of planar.

X2HR: just bought these cos they were cheap, randomly listen to for fun.

WFXM3: my first TWS iem and we're my go to for out and about, now my sleep IEMs

B&O H8 Gen 3: also listen to whenever sleep

B&O H95: bought cos I thought they would be better than H8, decent, but only ever use when I'm on plane as the foldable design is helpful.

WFXM4: bought as next generation, but just wasn't a fan of the fit of these oddly, still do take with me abroad as a backup to XM3's and bud pros 2.

Wan'er tangzu: bought cos they were cheap, use for gaming mainly.

Zero Red: bought before variations, as I like the tuning, but wanted a bit more technicality.

Variations: most recent purchase and they have been my go to after work, perfect iem, but eyes keep wandering to the Diva's, especially while it's on sale right now...

Pro arctis 7: for when I need a mic

Out of commission: 1more Triple driver 1more Quad driver Free AKG buds Sennheiser Momentum IEM When I first started getting "into" IEMs. Boy do I have a lot of audio stuff...

Altogether I have about 12 headphones/iems.

Dt 1990 Pros for competitive fps

Symphonium Helios for any other type of games and music.

Currently looking to see what pairs better with the mojo 2 for headphones and iems. Just like collecting and pairing things.

[–] slekaruu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

home use: he400se / olina se (depends if i want to prevent sound leaking or not)

going out: olina se

gym: space travel

the rest of my collection are mostly left unused aria, ssr, and hola are used only when i want to do comparisons, or when i’m bored.

m40x and sr850 are both unusable rn, in the middle of a modding project. the one i’d probably use is the m40x only because it’s a closed back.

[–] blackrao@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Diana MR - openback headphone of choice

Audeze Maxwell - closed back for that bassy fun

Kiwi Ears Quintet - overall fun and detailed iem

[–] hatlad43@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
  • HiFiMan HE400se: desk use at home, everything. I'd use this over the others to watch movies. Dat subbass rumble (speaker guys don't kill me plz). Never turn off autoEQ on this.
  • Grado SR80e: also desk use at home, everything. Prefer this over the HE400se when I want something lighter on my head. Rarely use autoEQ, because I've grown to love the sparkle.
  • Samson SR850: currently in my hometown, didn't carry them to where I work now as they're rarely used. Planning to give them away or to be sold.
  • Audio-Technica ATH-M50X: sometimes for audio monitoring when video making, an extra earmuff on air travels.
  • KZ PR2: for in the office.
  • Tangzu Wan'er SG: for commuting when I want to use my iPod, have foam ear tips for better seal. An alternative for audio monitoring when video making.
  • Sony WF-1000XM4: sometimes commuting, definitely for air travel, under the M50X.
  • FiiO F9 Pro: were my IEM flagship, until beaten by.. the Wan'er. And PR2. Planning to sell them.
[–] jumboshrimp93@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Utopia: At home personal listening to myself. I just got them and I’m addicted.

U12t: In office and isolated home listening.

AirPods Pro: At gym and out for a walk listening

[–] Antonius369@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
  • Hifiman Sundara/HE-4XX: Desktop setup at home for music, watching TV and movies, and YouTube.
  • Moondrop Starfield: I use these at home when I need to block out the neighbourhood when everyone decides to mow the lawn at the same time. Or dogs/puppies suffering from separation anxiety.
  • CCA CRA: My beater set for work. Provides enough noise reduction on construction/work sites to protect my ears.
  • AKG N400C: My grab and go for errands. The sound signature has grown on me but it's nothing special. Noise cancellation isn't that much better than the CRA's.
  • QianYun Qian39: I use these in bed listening to ASMR. They're comfortable enough to fall asleep in.
[–] mie_prefecture@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

hd650-home at the computer

crinacle zero red-home when it's loud, away from home

moondrop nekocake-bowling

[–] Mars_to_Earth@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Neumann NDH-30 (black): My desktop workhorse, does a supreme job for gaming, movies, music and youtube. Will only replace when it breaks down. I prefer them over the sennheiser HD660S/2.

IE800S: My IEM workhorse when I need a bit more focus. I generally do not prefer over ear IEM’s because of my glasses and the sense that I lack freedom so this is as good as it gets. I got a good deal for them.

Airpods Pro (1st gen): For anything happening outside. I prefer them over 2nd gen bc they don’t catch any wind noise.

IE300: My sleephorse when the need arises.

Wired airpods: For when I want to wear iem’s but still hear everything around me. Easily the best bang for buck out of all. Sound quality is unironically pretty good.

Fiio K7: My desktop dac/amp. Also looks great on the desk with it’s lit up volume wheel.

[–] General_Claymore@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hifiman Sundara - Usage at home on my desktop

Hifiman HE-R9 - when I want hard hitting bass and don't feel like wearing my sundara

Anker Sound core A40 - when I out on the go, or using my phone docked into my gamesir X2 controller. Playing a game otg or on the excise bike.

ER2SE - When I'm on my laptop listening to music etc
