Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

MODERATORS

“In China, the government can control education, high schools, colleges, universities. We thought that the USA could be different," one student said.

Chinese students say they’re questioning their decision to study in the U.S. after Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the federal government will attempt to “aggressively” revoke their visas.

Rubio said Wednesday that Chinese students “with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields” would be targeted.

Chinese students who spoke to NBC News on Thursday said that they came to the U.S. for freedoms they felt they did not have back in China but that now the Trump administration is starting to resemble the strict regime they left behind.

The US speedrunning towards shithole status.

[–] BedSharkPal@lemmy.ca 46 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Turns out a lot of Americans just wanted to live in a shit hole this whole time.

Americans live in a country where people die on the regular because they cannot go to a doctor.

They regularly have go fund me's to pay for medical treatment.

They live in a country that has no guaranteed paternity, sick, or vacation time.

America is a shit hole country with the veneer of being rich.

To sum it up America is a third world country with a Gucci belt. It has been that way for a while

America is a playground for the rich and a sweatshop for everyone else.

To sum it up America is a third world country with a fake Gucci belt. It has been that way for a while.

Fixed that for you.

The US is one of the wealthiest, if not the wealthiest, in the world. The issue is that there are very few people that represent that wealth.

A lot of those people have lived in shithole states their entire lives. I was speaking with a person from Uganda that would have voted for trump if he could vote. He lives in Washington State. I tried to explain to him that there's a difference between rural Alabama and Seattle, that you get a lot of benefits most states don't get. I don't think he understood the difference.

Americans are drowning in propaganda. They're constantly being sold expensive inferior replacements for any kind of public good or service.

Nobody wants to live in a shit hole, but when every TV and radio is screaming "Don't trust the government! Privatize! Privatize! Privatize!" that's what people ultimately believe.

Incidentally, the same news media selling privatization of every aspect of life is the one screaming "People in China are miserable! Everything is awful! Don't be like the gross, stupid, evil Communists!"

It's been a steady process since about 1980. People are just now actually realizing it because the shitty policies that they greedily voted for are impacting them too, not just future generations.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 51 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yes, but China is forward looking while doing shitty things. The US is putting it in reverse gear while doing shitty things.

Hegseth said war is imminent. I have no idea is that's true bit this is the sort of thing you do when you expect war is near.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That would presume that they have any kind of plan.

[–] plyth@feddit.org 10 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Have you forgotten project 2025?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

That's a self-contradictory bunch of fascist fantasies but not a coherent plan. So OK, technically they do have a plan, you got me there.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Coherence is immaterial. They’re following it, and they’ve accomplished significant amounts of what the plan defines. Dismissing it because it’s a dumb plan is extremely myopic and dangerous.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago

If you look at the individual cards on that site, it's incredibly frightening. Especially about cutting medicaid, it was their plan all along.

[–] NewNewAccount@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Umberto Eco’s third tenet of fascism: The cult of action for action’s sake.

“Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”

I wish, they have all the great manufacturing jobs no one here wants to do.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago

Soon, they'll bring all the manufacturing back to America, incarcerate thousands of people for opposing the government, then force those political prisoners to be free slave labor under the 13th Amendment.

Come to Europe for actual freedom

[–] vga@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

A year ago I was seriously thinking that I might want to buy a laptop or a phone that was completely made in the U.S.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It literally isn’t possible. We don’t mine a lot of the raw materials.

[–] vga@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The phone I'm talking about is https://puri.sm/products/librem-5-usa/ and yeah I guess they're not even claiming that.

"Starting at $1,999" lol I was out of my fucking mind. Good thing I don't have that kind of monies.
