Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Life's too short to learn german. -- Mark Twain
Das Leben ist zu kurz um Deutsch zu lernen. -- Oscar Wilde

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 15 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Wait, Oscar Wilde spoke German?

[–] Novocirab@feddit.org 26 points 1 month ago (2 children)

From their early childhood the Wilde boys had a French nanny and a German governess, so that they grew up speaking German as well as French.

I mean if one reads his stuff it's rather obvious he must have had a German governess.

I can hardly understand it yet it enthuses me so

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I can identify. Sometimes I check the comments to see if someone asked for an English translation.

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Always feel free to do so yourself! I'm always happy to see foreigners interested in our culture

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 month ago

Cool. I will.

[–] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 1 month ago (2 children)

You can't always figure it out, but German is so similar to English you can sometimes get the gist of it.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 17 points 1 month ago

Exactly, for example, "ich bin laden" pretty transparently translates roughly to "I am loaded with accusations of lying underground with an air pipe and a fan"

But that's the fun, slowly and painfully learning deutsch from memes

[–] yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fellas, is it possible to learn the Deutsche language just from ich iel?

[–] Novocirab@feddit.org 13 points 1 month ago

Well, it's not as quite bad as learning English from !i_itrl@feddit.org.

[–] besmtt@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

I like to share the memes to lens and have it translate. It's fantastic and I love their memes.

[–] Not_mikey@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 month ago (3 children)

On android you can hold the bottom gesture area and it brings up Google ai "what's on my screen" mode and it has a translate function that will replace all the German text on the screen with English, seems to work pretty well at least on the German memes.

[–] OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 month ago

I'm a dinosaur, still browsing on a desktop PC. But I'm going to see if there's a similar plugin I can use. Thanks for the tip.

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nice... Seems to work. Thanks!

[–] cows_are_underrated@feddit.org 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Anecdote: This isn't guaranteed to work, since in ich_iel we somet8mes use "Zangendeutsch" which means, that we forcefully translate words, or parts of word, that are somewhat normalised, but are not native German words, back into German in the dumbest most confusing way possible.

[–] Dunstabzugshaubitze@feddit.org 10 points 1 month ago

no, we translate as accurate as possible, word by word!

Thats why I blocked the whole community.

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 51 points 1 month ago (2 children)

If I did that I'd have missed this gem.

No idea what it says but Lego meme!

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 54 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The meme is a reference to a popular German YouTube channel, called "Held der Steine" (basically translates as "Hero of Bricks").

On the channel, a guy shows off building block sets which you can then also buy in his accompanying shop. Up until a few years ago, it was almost exclusively Lego sets. Then Lego sent him a mail that his channel logo, which contained a Lego-like brick shape, violated the Lego trademark.
At a later point, they also demanded videos of him to be taken down where he had colloquially referred to building block sets from other manufacturers as "lego", as we often do in German.

And yeah, this did not go down well, so now the guy mostly shows off building block sets from other manufacturers and frequently highlights how insanely expensive Lego is in comparison.

[–] Flipper@feddit.org 21 points 1 month ago

Don't forget he also highlights the bad quality in comparison to the price.

[–] RedSnt@feddit.dk 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

It's not like translation is hard these days, but I will say it's rare I do it for ich_iel myself as well. In this case the meme says:

  1. I'm suing you!
  2. World, greetings. I'm the hero of the stones, in Frankfurt am Main (a city), in the heart of Europe, in my wonderful little shop, on a fantastic day, and look what I've brought you.
[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (5 children)

But the lazy in me doesn't want to type it out on another site. Especially on mobile where I can't pull it up side by side.

Anyone got good German learning resources? I took courses on it a decade ago and would love to get back into it. Tried Duolingo a while ago but I find it sucks with actual mechanics and just sprays and prays sayings.
