Excluding Canada which basically has the same development system as America, why is the rest of the world not producing any good guards? All the good international players are 6'8+. Luka, Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, Siakam, Sabonis, Markannen, Porzingis, Sengun, Gobert etc. Meanwhile who is the best small international player? Dennis Schroder? Kind of an interesting discrepancy

Its harder to make it in the NBA/get given a chance as a 6'2 guard, more competition.

Isn’t this the answer?

Pretty much lmao. Kids in Europe want to be the next Messi and Mbappe.

[–] Typical-Gold-29@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Why would they want to be poor like Luka when they coule be rich like Mbappe

If you look at sports worldwide, there’s a few much more popular than basketball like soccer, cricket, hockey, and tennis. And then there’s other sports like rugby that aren’t popular in America.

But if you are 6’8” basketball is an obvious choice

Cricket is dominated by the UK and commonwealth countries and South Asia so the large populations of India, Pakistan and Bangaldesh, tennis is just as accessible at a professional level to the average person, ice hockey requires a lot of equipment and an ice rink it's not as popular across the world, while field hockey is more popular in South Asia. Basketball is definitely the second popular and widely played sport across the world.

i wish Rugby would take off here. crazy fun to watch. also last i watched they had the crazy "3-D" adds painted on the field.

there is a finite amount of 6'8 and above humans in the planet, so it makes sense there are more international players in that range

Campazzo, Rubio, Sergio Rodríguez… they exists. Jasickevicious, Djorjevic… they had always existed.

For example, Calderon to get a good NBA career had to become one of the best assist to turnover ratio player, and one of the best shooters in the league (plus an amazing team builder in and out the court).

He was asking for good players. Did you see the players he listed, the only one that you mention that even comes close is prime Ricky Rubio.

One of the old sayings is that America is better at developing guards and Europe is better at developing bigs.

AAU is heavily focused on flashy guard skills and a lot of big mens development suffer ala James Wiseman. Euro leagues develop more fundamentals so you get more traditional big men skills there.

They don’t have the athletic ability.

[–] Donny_Crane@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

It’s funny to see how in this thread “our best athletes play soccer, that’s why our guards aren’t very good” is an accepted argument here, given how indignant the reverse argument seems to make Eurofans

[–] kharathos@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

There have been a lot of euroleague guards trying in the NBA but most of them returned to Europe very fast. They play the game very differently and it's not easy for them to become a role player in the NBA. Also the athleticism of NBA guards is out of this world, it's very difficult to find a starting spot.

To answer the original question: Micic, schroder, Mills, Simmons, exum, giddey, Fournier, bogdanovic and Osman are some of the current guards in the NBA outside north america

Don't forget Jeremy lin from taiwan

[–] ZimManc@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

The first point before we even get to an answer is quite simply this: you're not a guard because you're small. Look at the Euroleague, and you'll see how many bigger players are running the point.

[–] Overall-Palpitation6@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Josh Giddey is meant to be a point guard (has spent most of his NBA career so far being played out of position due to roster construction). Dyson Daniels is also a guard/wing type. Tyrese Proctor is expected to be a high draft pick this year too.

On the older side, Dennis Schroeder just led Germany to a FIBA World Cup win.

And you know, Luka.

[–] stridered@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Giddey’s also 6’8.

[–] Shxcking@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Vasilije Micic (Euroleague MVP drafted to OKC) - 6’5”

[–] stillhadaldis@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

my guess is that if ur very tall someone will say you should play basketball whereas in the states most kids play basketball to some extent on their own volition.
