People rushed them. As soon as it's not working out, it's "blow it up", "trade x", etc.

It's still one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history and they can't even keep this team together. Getting off to a good start in November is laughably early to make any predictions for how their season will play out. This is a franchise that has a single first-round series win in their entire history.
The only thing of value we gave up was the picks and if we remain a consistent playoff team who the fuck cares they’ll be mid to late rounders.
Pat Bev (signed a min contract) Beasley (signed a min contract) Bolmaro (out of the nba) Vando (signed close to mid level contract, absolutely terrible on offense, good defense) Kessler (white version of Hassan Whiteside, gets blocks but gets cooked on defense)
Considering we got a soon to be 4x dpoty giving away a bunch of dudes who were easy to get for minimum contracts on the open market as opposed to trading away someone like Lauri markannen for a dude who’s gonna leave that team asap, I think we did quite well.
Considering we got a soon to be 4x dpoty
lmfao Gobert has zero chance of ever winning DPOY again
Watch a basketball game occasionally before saying stupid shit.
I still think it was an overpay but one that was worth it. I definitely feel like if they were more patient they could've gotten Gobert for less
This is the way I view it
If it yields a championship I think I'm "overpaying" every time.
That is a huge "if" lol. Winning a championship is a bit different from going 13-4.
This exactly. Irrational Lakers haters (like BS) have been saying for multiple years we gave up too much for AD and the “Mickey mouse” ring. But I’d want the front office to do it again.
Of course not, but it's not even December yet. The Pelicans were number one in the west a little less than a year ago right now. Calm down man.
I am a Jazz fan and I thought the wolves overpaid but I also fully expected them to be contenders. Rudy isn’t a system player he is the system. You really have to learn how to funnel shots to him. It changes the whole game. I’m glad it’s working I hope they win a title and Rudy gets the credit he deserves.
If they make the finals this year; are we still saying it was an overpay?
Of course. But then again, there would be almost no trades that fail by this metric. That's the whole goal of making win now deals.
Would love for the TWolves to play the injury depleted Heat all for Jimmy G to actually destroy them with 3rd stringers and undrafted.
It is literally always going to be an overpay, even if they win.
They would have been better last year if Kat didn't miss so much time, and if russell was gone earlier.
Unless they win the championship, 5 first-round picks for Rudy Gobert is an overpay.
I doubt those 5 picks would yield better results than having Rudy for the next 5 years.
Every GM in the league would take Kessler on a rookie deal over Gobert on a near supermax. And that was just 1/10th of what you gave up. Lmao the twolves cannot even keep this team together because it would cost too much.
If they make The Finals, then it's absolutely not an overpay; actually, I'd consider it an amazing trade.
The Timberwolves have never gotten that far and I don't believe they really had contending expectations, recently.
Even if they make the Western Conference Finals, then the trade was worth it. I feel you have to factor the franchise's history into this. The decade-plus of 'Spooky Wolves' discussion disappointed every single year.
If they finally get over that hump and appear to be a significant challenger come Playoff-time, then I firmly believe the trade should be considered well worth the price.
Even if (big if, not putting the cart before the horse here) we have something like back to back WCF appearances, shit's worth it to me. We've been so fucking miserable for my entire adult life, I'm just begging for a deep playoff run.
The KG/Spree/Cassell year was so fun.
If we make back to back wcf and lose, is Finch gone? Or does he still have a long leash?
The other thing the trade does is put our young core in a winning environment every year. Look at what's happening with Cunningham and Green. They have been in losing cultures for the first years of their careers and developed some real bad habits. Tatum and brown came up in a winning culture and have developed better because of it
Even a team that conceivably went “full tank mode” like the Thunder had the good fortune of CP3 turning his career around there, which led to SGA getting real competitive games at a young age while learning from a top player at his position. Then you have the 6ers who imbued “don’t worry just wait a few years” into Embiid and Simmons bones and now they can never seem to get it done in the playoffs. There’s definitely something to not letting your team toil in mediocrity or worse for too long of a stretch.
it's just young players acquiring bad habits.
I don’t think we’ll be using over pay if they win a ring or make it to the finals for sure.
However, I will still always think they gave up too much for gobert no matter what. Seems like the wolves treated it like a more serious bidding war than it ever was.
If you factor in there history in regards to their shortcomings then you also need to factor it into the value of the picks they gave up. Historically, wolves have some of the most valuable draft picks
They won’t though
It's probably always going to be an overpay unless they go to the Finals, or at least a couple WCFs, but it's looking better now that their top 3 are actually playing together.
Need gobert kat to stay healthy. Kat always has gotten random unlucky inj the last few years. They are good when healthy even before gobert got there
The TWolves have 2 playoff series wins in their entire history. If the Gobert trade gets them even to the WCF, it's a franchise high water mark.
But it's still an overpay in the sense that they almost certainly could have gotten Gobert for less. They were bidding against themselves.
As a Timberwolves fan, I'd say it's ALREADY worth it. There were multiple full seasons where we literally barely won as much the whole year as have right now at 13. We're relevant. We're fun to watch. We're playing for today. We're in contention. We haven't had that in 20 years. I don't care what non-Timberwolves fans think tbh. They don't get it. Most of yall skip around with your favorite players anyway. You don't know what it's like to follow a losing team for decades. Only Kings bros can talk to us. I'm not losing sleep over some basic bench players and some #25-30 draft picks. We aren't #1 in the West without Gobert. Full stop.
Now I'm gonna enjoy this season that (barring injuries) will continue to be a blast
I swear I remember a grocery store promotion from one of the seasons following the KG trade, where if you bought a certain amount of cans of a brand of canned vegetables, you'd get a free wolves ticket. It's been almost 20 years since I believed in the team like I do right now.
I'm so happy for you guys. Truly deserve it. You guys already have a very young and talented team so building a winning environment is so much more important than just gambling for prospects ala 76ers back then
It’s always fun to see a move that was almost universally panned, with the first full year of results justifying the panning, turn into a success story b
Happening now: Gobert’s redemption arc
Still the worst trade in NBA history
Honestly that still depends. The amount of assets they traded for him means that its a win now situation.
Like in the long run if they dont win a championship, then its a failure no matter how well they perform.
But in the short term, just getting past the first round and having a good record in the regular season is more than enough for it to be worth it for now.
But still with these stars you are trading away your teams future to win it all.
If you dont win or at least dont get back like half the assets you traded for them if you trade them away, then its just a failure.
The Nets superteam may have failed, but they did get a ton of assets after trading their superstars away.
But Gobert in my eyes is still way too much. Like he is amazing, but they could have negotiated a much lower deal for him. The man isnt even a superstar, yet they traded for him like he was Jokic or Embid.
They’re a good team, but I’m getting the 20-21 Jazz vibes. Funny enough 2 of the starters from that team also start in Minnesota
