Woah stacking discounts on gas? I have to assume someone at Speedway got fired for allowing that to happen.

[–] IcedRaktajino@startrek.website 29 points 2 days ago

They definitely weren't supposed to stack, but the system didn't prohibit it. I found that out with some earlier $0.20 off per gallon coupons I had. That was the Speedway near my work, and she was still working there months later, so I guess she survived lol.

What do you drive that has a 25+ gallon gas tank?

[–] IcedRaktajino@startrek.website 44 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Car had a half-full 10 gallon tank. The limit was 25 gallons, so I came prepared with four, 5-gallon gas cans and filled those up.

That's the most frugal shit I've seen on here. Well done.

How much did the cans cost? We need all the math here.

The cans cost "borrowed them from my dad" dollars each lol.

There was a feller local to my area that got himself involved in stolen credit cards. He had welded himself together something that could only be called a vat in the bed of his truck that could hold 300+ gallons. They caught him at the station when he came back for the fourth time.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nonsense! My old buddy "Three Fingers" Donovan told me it's perfectly safe and you don't need to empty the cans before you start welding.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I wonder if he's related to my old buddy "Uninjured Hand" Donovan. Been a while since I checked in on him...

[–] bizzle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Before we went EVs we did this kind of thing a lot with our local grocery store chain. Buying groceries and gift cards from these stores on American Express Blue Cash Preferred credit card (6% back in grocery purchases) would effectively net you 18% off (in gasoline and cash). During certain promotions it would jump to 22% off. This means that anything you bought from Amazon, Ebay, Apple, Southwest Airlines, Disney, Best Buy, Universal Studios, Dicks Sporting Goods, Khols, Chipotle (and the list goes on..) would be at least 18% off. We would never purposefully buy something we didn't need from these stores, but rather if we ever had a need, we'd make sure we used this avenue to buy it.

The gasoline program at the grocery store changed a about 5 years dropping the discount yield to 13% which still wasn't bad. However once we went EVs we had no use for gasoline and stopped bothering with it.

Loy in Heaven, what a discount!

I feel like I'm missing something. I get why you blacked out the address of the gas station. I think it's overkill. But, I could see some doxxer trying some shit I'm not thinking of.

What I don't understand is why bother blacking out the last 4 of the credit card? It's long since expired, and without the other 12 digits, there's no way to trace it back to you even if it worked.

What am I missing?

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

it's just data sanitization. there may be other datasets tying OP to the former last-4-digits. it's still (sort of) personally identifiable even if it's defunct.
