I don't want any US deal, at all. I want sovereignty and democracy above all and that means cutting the US out of our supply chains. Lets get cross border trade to zero.

I don't buy from or sell to fascists and I don't take threats lightly.

[–] GrindingGears@lemmy.ca 19 points 3 days ago

I don't either. I think we should be totally closing the borders, and kicking off the start of their decline. If you look at the history books, it tells you not to basically turn them economically inside out, but the history books also tell you not to appease them, so honestly I'd go with the former not the latter.

[–] rozodru@piefed.social 13 points 2 days ago

nah fuck the US and fuck the people there that allowed this to happen and continue to allow it to happen.

Americans, get your shit together and then we can talk but just know that we as Canadians no longer trust you and won't be trusting you again for a very long time.

Only merger Canadians want is the merger between our collective boot and Trump's ass.

[–] ohshit604@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Will Carney grow a spine and call on repayment of all US debts to Canada? Will Carney quit disarming Canadians in the event Trump honours his 51st state non-sense so people can defend themselves, their family and their country?

I’m Canadian, I own firearms, I don’t want the 2nd amendment. Nobody does.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 70 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The less we have to do with the US at this point, the better. I understand it may not be feasible to cut ties completely, but let's keep it to the absolute bare minimum. I'm completely over their bullshit.

[–] oxysis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 32 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You are 100% right to be through with our bullshit, I am 100% done with my dumbass country’s bullshit

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 29 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Sorry friend, my beef is not with you. I know there are good-hearted Americans down there who are just as frustrated with this shit show.

Good luck overthrowing your Dictator.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Good luck overthrowing your Dictator.

And may that happen sooner rather than later.

[–] rozodru@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

As a Canadian, I'll believe it when I see it. And right now, I'm not seeing it any time soon.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Agreed.

For all their big talk, the Americans seem really short on action.

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 days ago

Canada, you need to cut America off. Full block, no contact. Straight up ignore Trump and his cronies. No more diplomatic visits. Pull your embassy out of the USA. Tell Trump that the US embassy is no longer welcome on Canadian soil and they need to GTFO. I say this as an American. Trump is an absolute narcissist and is incapable of compromise or rational thought. The rest of the world should do this too, including making sure American military bases are no longer welcome on your soil.

[–] jaemo@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The only merger that will make me happy is that of Trump and a high velocity round.

[–] Fenrisulfir@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

It doesn’t even have to be high velocity. I’d be ok if someone just pushed it manually into him, maybe with a slide hammer or something.

[–] brax@sh.itjust.works 52 points 3 days ago (3 children)

We had this, it was called the NAFTA.

Trump canceled it.

[–] LeFantome@programming.dev 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Actually Trump renegotiated it, called it USMCA, said it was the best trade deal in history, signed it on camera in a huge White House press event, lost the Presidency, won the Presidency, and then called it the worst deal ever and that it was signed by a stupid “past President”. Then tariffs in violation of it.

Even for Trump, that story arc is pretty wild.

[–] IndridCold@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

I mean, Canada can say anything to him and he'll forget it in a few hours. There is no point coming up with a plan under Trump because he's a fucking idiot old evil cunt.

Just say to Trump, "Good talk I think we're close", and leave. Then continue business as usual and secure other deals with other countries.

The United States is not a friend of Canada and it can not be trusted.

[–] bowreality@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Now we call what we have in our house NAFTA: not a fucking thing American

[–] Trex202@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

And it was his idea!

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 31 points 3 days ago

I still hate Amerikkka. My boycott lasts a lifetime. Trump or no Trump. We. Are. done.

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 27 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I am getting more and more concerned about the troop pile up on our borders and this fuck wits rhetoric.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (4 children)

I 100% get that, but I personally don't think Trump or Hegseth are smart enough to pull off a military operation as complex as infiltrating Canada. To make matters worse (for them), many branches of the military seem to hate their guts.

That said, I'm just some pacifist dope with almost no knowledge of this stuff. If an expert out there wants to scare the shit out of me, I'm ready to learn.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago

They could just run AI-generated war footage on Fox News. Sort of like “The Gulf War Did Not Happen” but much lower brow.

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

That just means they do it poorly and at enormous cost...

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

but I personally don't think Trump or Hegseth are smart enough to pull off a military operation as complex as infiltrating Canada

No, but they are stupid enough to try it anyway.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Americans have never been competent.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They also never been brave.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Only country to invoke NATO article 5. But, but, but, NATO bad….

[–] veeesix@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 days ago

Agreed, having forces concentrated so close to Vancouver and Toronto (via Portland and Chicago) is unsettling.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Only way we come out of it happy is if the border is permanently closed.

[–] IndridCold@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

At minimum, we need to secure the border and beef up defences in strategic points. I also think a screening for Americans should be in place and a "no-fly-list" started for American against democracy (IE: almost every republican in office).

First on the list is that fucker who is the US Ambassador to Canada. Pete Hoekstra. We need to ban his fucking ass from entering. He's an anti-Canada gaslighting old fuck stain

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

The fuck - no.

[–] Dogiedog64@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

What the fuck is he talking about? Is he high??? He must be, because that's the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

[–] Dead_or_Alive@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, no… just hear me out… at this point as an American. Perhaps we merge America with Canada instead of Canada with America.

Free healthcare, poutine, learning French in school, the Metric system. I can sign on to that.

[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Now you're cooking baby!

[–] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

He's high on seeing how far he's been able to subvert systems of government with social network tech bros at his heel, so he's going to keep on trying to push the point social networks are trying to impress onto the young and vulnerable. He's doing it with the cooperation of other authoritarian world leaders who also have a lot to gain from toppling a world order based on rules.

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 5 points 3 days ago

Why does Mandarin have to be so difficult to learn :(

[–] IndridCold@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

The only merger I'll have with America in my foot up their ass.

FUCK THE USA! Fuck them with a rusty tin can.

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Sorry bud, merging with a felon is still not in my plans.

$8T Canadian investment into the US over next 5 years?

possible he said A=$1T instead.

$1T is still extraordinary submission. ~9% of GDP/year. Bankrupting golden dome cooperation likely. Makes sure Canada is a necessary nuclear target too.

There's a point where treasonous oppression makes Canada a shithole country worth leaving.

[–] Soleos@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

To clarify, they are talking about foreign direct investment, like Canadian billionaires buying stocks in US companies, which the fed does not directly control, but can incentivize through trade agreements. The US can change their taxes on foreign investment on their side. From the other side, FDI is a reflection of how many shares of US companies are being bought up by non-US investors. The Canadian government does not own foreign stock afaik.

Part of the mind boggling numbers is due to massive inflation of certain US stock valuations in the last few years and related reinvestment of capital gains. For example, if I had $1000 invested in Intel last year after it crashed, it would be worth $2000 now. If I sold that and bought $2000 worth of Nvidia stock, that would count as $1000 net increase in my foreign direct investment, even though I haven't moved any "new" money into the US. Did Intel suddenly double in its assets or revenue? Hell no, it's a lot of speculation. People are gambling in the US market or seeking to influence US companies for economic advantage.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wan't an explanation for how he can promise to triple existing FDI in US in 5 years. He'd definitely be including US weapons purchases, and more government investment in US owned auto sector. Maybe an OpenAI scam.

Something horribly wrong for him to open his traitorous fuckface without wink wink nudge that he's just lying to Orange Mussolini.

It's a complete failure just to have this meeting and promise so much. Instead of making better friends in the world. You're being too charitable in assuring that this means nothing.

[–] Soleos@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

He can't promise anything about the FDI, it's not up to him, it's private investment. Like I said, both sides can make a deal that incentivized FDI. "half a trillion in the past 5 years, probably a trillion in over the next 5" is not exactly the language of a promise.

I don't necessarily agree with the policy or trade deals in their entirety and I'm actually more worried if we're opening up Canada for more US foreign investment in the same deal.

And we are making better friends in the rest of the world. We've been strengthening partnership with the EU including a new defense partnership. We're also finalizing new free trade agreements with the south East Asian bloc (ASEAN). And there's preliminary work ongoing on expanding free trade with the UK.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Mr Trump is confusing Mark Carney and Pierre Polyestre again. Pierre would definitely go for it.

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

djt and his goons are not allowed to be present inside a 100 km circle around and above me
