Last week I canceled HBO. They increased prices and if I did not want that, I'd have to watch ads. I'm not watching ads. And they did not provide enough value to increase the price. Vote with your wallet. I certainly do.

Amazon: "Oh, we didn't mean those ads. That's clearly stated on page 112 of the user agreement under "Enshittification."

In the advertising world, it's not advertising, it's a promotion

For example, if you go to the grocery store, there is a difference between hearing/seeing something that says, "bananas are on special today" vs "go buy [specific brand] of cereal today!"

still sucks though

[–] spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Gotta call BS. I didn't go anywhere and happen across a promotion, Amazon pushed this ad into my home, despite charging me a monthly fee not to do so. Why not go all the way and call it a public service announcement?

This is just like cold calls from local contracting companies claiming that they aren't violating the "Do Not Call" list because they aren't actually selling new windows, just informing the public of their new promotion.

[–] kuberoot@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 week ago (6 children)

You can call "bs" all you want, but you're yelling at the messenger. If I understand the situation correctly, you're using an Amazon service, so Amazon promoting Amazon stuff on that service might count as self-promotion (or whatever the term is) rather than advertisement. The difference being that they're not being paid by somebody to promote their thing, and just calling out their own services/events.

Note that I'm also not supporting this, I don't like it, but I'm also not surprised if that's how that works, and that Amazon would be using it this way.

Promotions are a form of advertising. Just because they have the excuse that it's advertising on their own service doesn't make it not advertising.

[–] capnminus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Nah, they're promoting their retail business on their streaming platform. Not the same thing. This is a scummy move from Amazon

[–] capnminus@lemmy.world 50 points 1 week ago (2 children)

So you upgraded to an ad-free plan and they still show this?

[–] spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.works 38 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 34 points 1 week ago

Wow. Makes me want to cancel them twice.

[–] comador@lemmy.world 30 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Paramount does this shit too.

If you have Ad Free Paramount+ you get 30s intro ads where you have to hit the >> or OK button to make it go away.

[–] natecox@programming.dev 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The “previews” are standard fare across most streaming apps and it drives me absolutely crazy.

then you start your ad-free viewing by selecting a show... and they show you an ad for a different show. this aggravated me more than the ads on the page shown there.

[–] nogooduser@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

This is the same as all the games that advertise themselves as having no ads but they do have ads for in app purchases.

For some reason they don’t consider those as being ads.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 40 points 1 week ago (1 children)

upgrade to piracy. its free and ad-free.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

While I don't personally engage in piracy, I can definitely see why people go that route. Streaming services suck so much. All these companies had to do was make it more convenient to not pirate.

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago

there's a reason why video game and music piracy has had a dramatic reduction, and why tv/movies still have a significant number of pirates.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 33 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hm seems to be missing the "Fuck off" button

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

I left when they started charging more so they wouldn't ruin your service with ads... which they did anyway

[–] teft@piefed.social 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I’m sorry but if i pay for a service that’s ad free and they put ads in the media i’m watching then i will instantly cancel that service. Anyone who doesn’t is just enabling that behavior.

I remember a time when Hulu was free and without ads. Then it was not free with ads. First was never gonna last, but the route they took to get where they are NOW was absolutely stupid as fuck.

[–] Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago (4 children)
[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh so it is. I hadnt heard this news until just now looking up what you're talking about.

points at Hulu Ha ha!

[–] natecox@programming.dev 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I am so angry about this. I generally like Hulu, I hate Disney+.

[–] darkdemize@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

I'd have liked Hulu a lot more if it weren't geo-restricted to the US.

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

God damn it. I knew Disney getting into the streaming biz was going to suck balls. I was already pissed off when they pulled their content to form their own service.

Well, guess I'll be watching more anime. Only got Crunchyroll left. And I'm not sure how long that's gonna last either. They are making stupid choices as well.

[–] Jayayess1190@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It isn't shutting down, it is just being folded into Disney+. You can still get a standalone Hulu subscription but as of sometimenext year will only be accessible through the the Disney+ app.

[–] Croquette@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

So back to cable packages. Fucking dumb

[–] Draces@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm pretty sure it was never free and without ads. There were much fewer and even sometimes would have really quick "thanks for watching now get back to the show" ads but ad free has always been paid

Sounds like you're ready to stop buying anything from Amazon. One of us. One of us..

[–] _cryptagion@anarchist.nexus 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm on their ad-free plan myself. but the free one, that you don't pay anything for.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

same! I like that buffering is never an issue. and I don't even have to deal with their shitty UI!

[–] _cryptagion@anarchist.nexus 4 points 1 week ago

and they don't even mind you sharing your password with family either

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Bezos has enough money. Don’t give him anymore of yours

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Options are "close" and "close and give us even more data"

Interesting

You better sail the high seas and watch your shows Amazon-free.

[–] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 8 points 1 week ago

the only thing that I think that you can do about it is cancel and not use the service.

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

There's definitely something in their terms of service that says the ad-free doesn't apply to their products.

[–] la508@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

ReVanced, SmartTubeNext, a Fen Lite build of Kodi, and Real-Debrid. You'll never sit through any adverts ever again.

[–] kepix@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

have you unsubscribed?

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 3 points 1 week ago

Ad-blockers are a must

The only time I see ads are when I'm streaming something live. And that's because they have actual commercial breaks
