I know everyone here says that this is somewhat safe because the employees are told not to interfere. But what you really need to worry about is the store building a case against you across multiple instances of shoplifting, and then reporting you to the police as soon as you've stolen a felony amount.

Per store
Not true, at least a couple of the ~~but~~ big chains, e.g. target, will keep track of you even at different stores.
Target is a butt-chain!
This; as much as I have no moral qualms about the practice, there's massive risk that's not always obvious to see.
Retail staff are trained to let you go, we're not security, we can't stop you, a manager might try but just be confident and walk with intent and you'll be fine.
Yeah it's like when you're leaving a store whose manager sucks and instituted receipt checking.
Youre trying to leave and there's this big line of people getting checked. You can just leave. People seem happy to sheep along but you can just leave.
Many years ago now I bought some shitty furniture at a target (I think it was a desk chair or something) and I refused to acknowledge the receipt checker so they followed me to my car at which point I just lied and told them I'd thrown it away after I left the store. Of the two of us, the other guy was the only one who might get in trouble.
We do steal every time. Somewhat around the amount everything went more expensive. Not because we need to, but out of principle. Mostly around 20% of what we buy. We are old and don't look stereotypical enough, so we never get controlled.
They rob us, we rob back. It's only fair. And yes, we know it's not the shops that rob us, but the manufacturers. But we can't rob a factory. Needless to say, we'd never steal in a small mom&pops. Just the big stinky chains.
If laws don't apply for the rich, get fucked, they don't apply for me either. Fuck your system.
Turns out the USA never left the Wild Wild West age.
I'm no murican...
Samesies! My partner isn't vegan, so whenever I'm buying food for him, I just so happen to pull it a bit too quick over the self-checkout scanner so I guess it doesn't scan, oops 🥺
They beep so fucking loud here, this would not fly well with a cashier (or can) that watches well 😁
But we came up with different ways to do it over time. And yes, self checkout mostly, but we also do it at register if we have to. The most brazen one was a whole fucking door we drove by the cashier while my wife distracted him with questions and her charme 😁
We should not be proud of that, but we are. We probably wouldn't even have noticed the price hikes. But I absolutely despise that they force you to pay more for things you can't boycott. I can just not buy a car, but I can't not buy food to protest. Fucking greed.
Sorry, a door?! That’s impressive.
...while we paid for the hinges 😁 Sometime it's really simple: if you just do it as if you're allowed to do it, noone questions it. Like going right into spaces you're not supposed to go, if you're wearing something orange, a screwdriver or whatever else and just fucking go there as if you own the place.
The places I've been to without ever been questioned, including ceos offices or treasuries or....just because suit and laptop in hand. I was actually allowed but I was never ever questioned or stopped. Might be my nasty resting bitch face, I dunno 😁
at the wm here, if you even look at the scanner cross-eyed, it sounds the alarms and halts the register until the babysitter can come over, review the footage and unlock it. if anything passes anywhere in the cameras' very wide fov and a scan isn't registered... anything... it stops.
they got sam's club-like checkers at the exits, now, too. anything not in a bag gets 'checked'.. at least that's what we've concluded is their criteria, based on when we have been stopped trying to leave.
me thinks they've had a slight uptick in 'customer-applied discounts' lately.
I never shoplifted. But if I saw a shoplifter I have to say no, I didn't. No idea what you are talking about. None whatsoever. Here is my receipt for my stuff... what other guy? I don't look at other people. Kindly leave me be. Good day!
Makes sense, although at the same time the price of things you buy is based on the cost with theft factored in already. More thefts mean they would have to adjust the calculation and prices go up to cover it. I don't know how far that goes, 99% theft and the 1% spending £50 on a loaf of bread?
Part of it depends what someone is stealing, if its a bag of potatoes or some bread, you are probably desperate. If its a 4k TV I don't have that same sympathy.
Prices go up more when inflation goes up, and they go up again when inflation goes down. Then they go up again because of war, or tariffs, or because of fuck the poor.
Theft is far far down the list of reasons to raise prices.
It takes a big man to accept government assistance.
That’s getting shut down too, they already fired most of the SNAP employees.
cwime…
But that's illegal!
pussy
meow?
I recently saw a clip of a video where a girl was working checkout at Walmart and the person just pushed their cart through the checkout and walked out the store with it and she was just like, well, whatever.
They are trained not to care unless they are loss-prevention for their own well being, and the latter can really only report the theft.
They explicitly told us to not confront shoplifters. There was a training video where a guy got his ass kicked in the parking lot.
How would you get that much stuff out of a store without getting caught? Slipping a candy bar in your bra or a can in your bag is easy, but when you've gained 5+ kg of weight in the store, the cashier might get a tad bit suspicious. I guess you could make multiple trips, but I think cashiers or guards would notice when the same person has gone into the store 9 times without buying anything.
The post is likely fake.
You are not gonna pass by a particularly attentive loss prevention team, even if small. But some stores do wait until you steal enough to make it a felony.
You can just walk out. Most places won't stop you.
Yeah we have a place around the corner called the market where people shop for free. You can only shop twice a month tho.
Much more sustainable to shoplift a little bit at once. Steal like 1 item when you buy 10, make it something small. Oops, it just slid under something in your bag. Don't make it the most expensive item of your shop.
In my area the self checkout systems at the grocery store often fritz out an don't register the item. This is even after they beep. It's truly wonderful. I consistently get 50% or more of the items in my cart for free. Nothing they can do to me either. They have me on video scanning every item. If their system buggers up the total it's on them.
If they want somebody to catch computer errors then there's a thing called "pay a employee."
I'm not saying this is moral or anything, but if you buy something expensive, then you could theoretically go back to the store with the receipt, pick another of that thing from the store, and go to the register and tell them you want to return it.
I have been homeless. You do what you need to survive.
Hey, don't feel bad. A giant chain won't go under because someone desperate needed to eat.
That's my reasoning too. In fact, I wouldn't care if a giant chain would go under because I stole bread and sausages, I am not going to just lie down and die because society says so.
I literally got caught doing that one time. I was in a really bad spot. I never stole for money or to resell, or for value like, I always went for food I was actually going to eat, and I even avoided the pricier brands because I didn't want to be an asshole- I just wanted to survive, you know.
I grabbed a few smoked dried sausages and some bread, and went outside and ate them. Two plain clothes cops came up to me, "Where'd you get that?", I was like, "This is my lunch", and they said, "So, you didn't nick that from the store right now?", and I sat there silent for a moment and said, "Well... I'm not saying I did, but if I did say I nicked it from the store right now, what would theoretically happen to me?", and the guy looked at me and the meager meal I had scrounged and said "let's go".
We went back into the store, and he went up to the cash register, and paid for my meal out of his own pocket. Then he motioned for us to leave, and then, as if he caught himself remembering that he needed to "do" something, he looked at the cashiers and then back at me and yelled at me- "AND DON'T DO IT AGAIN!". But we were all good.
Best cop interaction of my life. If anything, I have never felt worse about stealing, because his pity really hit home to me how bad shape I was really in that time...
It's why they have those annoying gates at Kroger now, to stop people from just walking out with carts full of groceries.
Lame.
