J.D. Vance’s lead in the polls could be collapsing because of his association with Trump, according to an expert

J.D. Vance’s chances of becoming the GOP nominee for president in 2028 have taken a dive, according to a new poll.

The survey looking at potential successors to Donald Trump has seen the vice-president’s lead in a list of theoretical candidates narrow significantly in recent months.

And in the most recent poll in November, the Vance’s margin continued to fall. According to the survey of 439 voters conducted between November 17 and 24, Vance’s lead over Trump Jr had plummeted to just 10 points. The latest results put Vance at 34% and Trump Jr at 24%.

Trump's polling figures have collapsed in recent months, with every major poll giving Trump a negative rating for the first time ever.

Even a Fox News poll suggested that 61% of respondents think that Trump's administration has damaged the economy, with just 3% approving of his economic strategy.

Op: Barron Trump

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 9 points 13 hours ago

JD is nothing but a Peter Thiel puppet.

[–] myfunnyaccountname@lemmy.zip 4 points 12 hours ago

But his pole is raising for that new line of sofas.

[–] PumpkinSkink@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

There is no universe where that guy was going to be Trump's successor. Nobody likes him, he's only there now because Peter Thiel believe he will allow him to replace humanity with robots or something.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

He's only there because he's the only guy that WOULD run with him

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

He'll be lucky to get prison time instead of a firing squad.

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 2 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

Wait his lead over who??? That coke fueled failson is in the running??

Jebus, this is the stupidest country that has ever existed.

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

He hasn't announced or anything. Neither of them have. The pollsters just provided some hypothetical names to compare; I don't know who other than Vance or Jr, but if I had to guess I'd say probably people like Ron DeSantis, Greg Abbott, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Ted Cruz.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 11 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

oh deer gods it is still 2025

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 4 points 19 hours ago

Lol my SO asked me how many years does trump have left?

Haven't been more than 1 yet...

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I can't even click onto the article. Anyone who puts any stock in polls is living in a fantasy world. The activity is as flawed as the system it is looking to measure. We might as well be asking oracles or soothsayers. If the polls had any credibility we would be living in the Trump dystopia, several times over.

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

All models are wrong. Some models are useful.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 14 hours ago

Awe, c'mon. Put a clown who has no chance of winning on the ticket..

[–] EtAl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 52 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Don Jr. is in second place!? That would be awesome if he got the nomination. He's such a coked up clown, the American public would never vote for... such a... you know what, never mind.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 hours ago

Don Jr. is in second place!?

Second place of the options the polling company suggested in the survey question.

[–] Phegan@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

We said that about trump in 2016, don't wish for something, you might actually get it.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 day ago

that was the joke

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

What if we insist that a circus clown on crack can't be president. Like we've already got some coked up clowns, and so long as we find one that only speaks Canadian French and only cares about Quebecois politics it should probably be fine. And I'm sure someone from cirque was born here.

[–] RufusFirefly@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not sure if there's anybody in the Republican Party that is a viable candidate, much less JD Vance. The Republican's message may be populist but their motivations are pure greed and authoritarianism and a lot of red state voters are finally waking up to that fact.

[–] skeezix@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

finally waking up

yup, we've been hoping that for 10 years.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Vance’s lead over Trump Jr had plummeted

What! Seriously?
Those are what GOP is currently considering the best 2 options?

USA is a joke, and unfortunately a very bad one.

[–] TheOneCurly@feddit.online 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The last name trump on the ticket will trick a significant number of people into thinking they got their 3rd term wish.

Trump is a cold, gold painted toilet, JD is one of the turds floating in it.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 51 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

If he wants to ever be president, he needs to either invoke the 25th amendment or get on board with impeachment.

I dreamed that trump was impeached again and this time the Senate voted 50-50. Couch fucker was the tie-breaking vote, and he voted to convict, effectively electing himself president.

It's disheartening that this wasn't a good dream, but it was still too good to realistically hope for.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 31 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The House needs over 50% to impeach. The Senate needs 2/3 or 67 vote to convict so there wouldn't be a situation where a tiebreaker comes into play.

It is nice to dream though...

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lmao I can't believe I forgot that. Glaring plothole in my dream.

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 day ago

A dream with poor fact checking? I guess otters can’t talk, and don’t all want to be my friend.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Yeah I’m sure the 67 vote restriction was for this very reason, so the VP couldn’t just elect himself.

I'm not super familiar with pooling sample sizes. Is 439 a big enough sample to draw conclusions from? Is it a group of people that spreads decently across a specific demographic that historically produces meaningful results?

I have such a hard time understanding political polling. Anyone know of a good way to get up to speed? Doesn't have to be quick

[–] frog_brawler@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

It’s been 2 decades since I took a course on statistics but it was specifically the statistics related to polling, and I vaguely recall something around 1024 being the sample size that would provide 3% margin of error. 439 people surveyed means next to nothing.

I could be a little off on my numbers but I know 439 isn’t enough.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Not surprising, nobody likes this prick

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Dude is awkward. Like, so fucking awkward that I’d feel bad for him if he wasn’t also a piece of shit. Really thought he was thinking of ditching his wife for Erica Kirk but that would be awful AND stupid.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He will dump his wife and Marry the blond white girl. Maga wont accept his current wife as first lady.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I strongly disagree. They love having someone around that they can point to and say, "see, we’re not racist."

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

It'd be so much more believable if she didn't get bombarded with racism by their side

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I cannot imagine that being seen as the weird puppet of the even weirder puppetmaster Thiel is doing him any favors, either.

I mean, Thiel and his weird associations - the freaks writing The Sovereign Individual, Curtis Yarvin, and Elon himself....blech. I think about the only people getting excited about any of those freaks and their ideas for how WE should live OUR fucking lives would be either the most idiotic of incel morons and centimillionaires and billionaires.

The Democratic Party needs to bring back calling these people weird again. I mean, all the time, too. Orchestrated. Like they started to do for like a minute before someone clearly had them dial it back.

Because these people are fucking weird. Sure, the right tries to constantly cast anyone to the left of Rush Limbaugh as some blue-haired trans person with face piercings and by that coding, way outside the mainstream. But anyone that is a billionaire is by definition someone that is wildly out of step with the everyday person. People like Mikey Johnson that have some weird porn pact with their son are deeply weird. People that follow the likes of Curtis Yarvin telling the elites that we need to get over things like democracy are extremely weird freaks, and people should point and laugh at this kind of thing.

But definitely point it out all the time...don't pretend any of this shit is the least bit respectable.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Calling them weird? No they need to be tried for sedition and racketeering and be fined the sum of their wealth to fix the damage they’ve done to our country.

[–] tym@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

south park is the only entity attacking the right people with the right kind of satire. bless those gents, we don't deserve them.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

We still think there's gonna be an election?

[–] untorquer@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

Of course there will be a completely free and fair, totally not rigged election, and not a hint of voter suppression. It is America after all. I suspect with the job he's doing there will be about 93% trump voters, give or take a few points, across the board.

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My hopes were very low a few months ago, but right now, the tides are turning and I think his time may have come. If the entire party isn't with him in lockstep, his efforts to remain as king will not succeed.
