No League of Legends either. Truly a wonderful system.

It used to work, and now it doesn't.ย

    [โ€“] Krompus@lemmy.world 31 points 3 weeks ago

    Good riddance.

    It runs Dota 2.

Now, I am a huge fan of Dota 2. But it sucked up so much of my free time.

I used to play LoL, and Dota is by far more addictive.

    Hopefully it's priced reasonably.

Still cheaper than moving my main computer to DDR5

    [โ€“] turbowafflz@lemmy.world 25 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

It's crazy that under 2 years ago I got like twice the memory for my laptop I had intended to because it was so cheap I just figured why not.

    [โ€“] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 20 points 3 weeks ago

I bought 96gb ram for mine about 6mo ago because I also figured why not, wasn't even the most expensive part of my machine go big or go home. Cost me like $200 after tax, that same ram now is almost $850 before tax

    [โ€“] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 weeks ago

I'm SO glad I overbought a couple years ago too. In fact I've had a lucky streak of buying at just the right time with my 3080 back during covid too.

    [โ€“] henfredemars@infosec.pub 3 points 3 weeks ago

    Still a bargain.

    [โ€“] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

I wonder how much that'll be worth by next year.

Not after the Great AI Cucking of 2025.

    [โ€“] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago

    I hope this name sticks.

Ehh. It's definitely going to be more than traditional consoles. Whether it's worth it to you depends on how much you care about having a console like experience on your TV, except with your steam library, and all the goodness that comes with a Linux-based OS.

You can absolutely play Call of Duty on Linuxโ€ฆ and Call of Duty 2!!!

    [โ€“] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 30 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (3 children)

Oh no, it looks like I can't play Black Ops 7. :(

I can only play Black Ops I, II, and III. :(

What am I going to do? :(

    EDIT: /S

What am I going to do? :(

Play Black Ops I, II, and III!

    Play the nazi zombie mode?

    What about bad company?

    [โ€“] kayazere@feddit.nl 2 points 3 weeks ago

I actually only played the original Call of Duty and the sequel on PC when they released ๐Ÿคฃ

My problem with Windows is the kernel level anticheat that comes with online games. On linux these anticheats only have user privileges, and still allow you to play online. That alone is just such a massive advantage that the ~10 games that donโ€˜t run on Linux are negligible to me. Also itโ€˜s the publisherโ€˜s choice they only work on Windows so fuck โ€™em!

    [โ€“] wheezy@lemmy.ml 13 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Sure. But Window's itself already has Kernel level access. So, I feel like if you're running Windows the issue of some gaming company having kernel level access is much less concerning to me than a genocide supporting software weapons manufacturer.

Like, I'm against the gaming companies having kernel access. But if you're running Windows in 2025 you're already sharing all of your data with one of the most malicious companies that exists. Microsoft is currently on the level of the many American companies that worked with the Nazis. I guess my point is that Riot having access to my keystrokes is the least of my concerns if I'm on Windows.

Edit: Speaking as a former Microsoft employee.

It will be a instabuy for me

So happy that I'm blessed to not like 95% of online multiplayer games, or mostly the competitive ones. People cry about not having CoD and Overwatch, and I just sleep easy knowing that none of the games my mom and I play are affected ๐Ÿ˜Œ

More people need to like RPGs and single player games man

    [โ€“] Shanmugha@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago

Overwatch can be run on Linux no problem. The shitty matchmaker though has buried the game for me anyways

    [โ€“] rainbowbunny@slrpnk.net 24 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of Call of Duty games that do work on Linux

    [โ€“] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 30 points 3 weeks ago

    Only the ones worth playing.

I definitely want it. If it's cheap, I definitely want two.

Actually everything they recently announced looks great. I really want to try to frame.

I gave up on VR after the oculus CV1 got canned. I bought one, got a few decent years out of it in spite of "meta" buying the company and making it shit, but when they stopped selling the connection cables for the CV1, which was the part that broke most frequently, I just backed the hell off and thought to myself, "this shit is cool, but it's clearly not established enough to be predictable, maybe some day".

Whelp, I think we're finally there.

Until now, you had the "option" of either something mainstream like the quest 7 (or whatever number they're on), or you can pick from either the index, which was on the pricy side for what you were getting, or the bigscreen beyond, which required an iPhone to scan your face so they can make a custom face shield just for you (and to get more you had to scan those people in and get face shields for them at a premium). Anything else was so niche that you probably were not getting support, if the company even existed in a few years to support you.

Now? A first party VR that actually looks good and works natively with steam....

So yeah.... Where do I sign up?

I've wanted a steam deck for years but I don't game on the go so I can't really justify it, but the rig I'm using for couch gaming is getting pretty dated..... So this seems like a great time to get back into everything.... Though, finding the money I need to get the systems is going to be a challenge....

    [โ€“] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago

I'm with you. When I heard about the deck I was excited. When I got one, I was not prepared for how good it is. The quality is amazing. They thought of (it seems) basically everything.

And I'm hoping this translates to all the new shit. Exciting!

    [โ€“] chris@l.roofo.cc 2 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Would 700-800โ‚ฌ be cheap to you? That's a reasonable estimate I've seen.

    [โ€“] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

Probably not. That's basically a full week of take home pay for me.

The new Call of Duty games do some SCP level containment for everyone sane in this hobby. Let Windows have that!

    presses F to that

    [โ€“] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 14 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

As much as I have no desire to play either of those games, their existence on Windows affects me exactly zero. I'm still a mixed Linux and Windows user (and a couple of Macs I don't want), I manage a lot of machines between my family and my small nonprofit. I like Linux a lot but I doubt I'll ever be able to walk away from Apple or Windows completely. But a man can dream! People keep dragging me back in...

    [โ€“] mortalic@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
    [โ€“] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I run a nonprofit that owns a few venues with great sound systems, so I deal very closely with a lot of musicians. And man do they all love their Macs. The windows attachment mostly has to with older large donors involved in our accounting. But neither of those things are going to change super quickly. I just keep switching over more machines one by one.

I'm on the fence because I don't think it would be an upgrade for me. I want a new PC, but, like... A better one and not just the same overall power but with RTX and DLSS.

I've got a Ryzen 5 3600, 1660 Super, and 16GB of RAM. Very little that has released this year performed poorly, and those that did had problems everywhere for everyone (like Stalker 2) when targeting 1080p@60fps. Or even 4K for some games (mostly 2D ones, but Civilization 4, 5, and 6 all play well at 4k too; IDK about 7 only because I don't have it and the changes to it sound awful anyway).

But I want more power for VR. It's a great flatspace rig; it's low-tier as a VR rig. I want it to be silky smooth in VRchat even in the gnarliest of rooms with a ton of high quality avatars. It would be hella expensive tho... ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Regardless of the SM tho, I 100% want a Frame. The biggest gripe I have with the Quest 3 is the goddamn system software. The fucker is capable of so much more but they limit it with the locked down OS. Having a set running on Linux means I can do everything I want.

    [โ€“] dil@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

I wont be able to buy one til next year, prices are up so much I done even want to, might as well save up more and wait til the steam vr headset drops, idk ive started reading more, everything seems expensive, pirating comics is free

    I just bought a 10m HDMI cable. Almost 30โ‚ฌ.

    Bo7 sucks anyway.

Has anybody heard any news on the HDMI issue Valve has been working on? I really want one but I use my PC connected to my TV so HDMI is pretty necessary.

You should be able to play Fortnite through Heroic Launcher. COD, can't help ya

    [โ€“] GladiusB@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

When I tried Heroic Launcher it gets you to the menu, but not into the game. The Anti-cheat software is lame and Epic has stated many times they won't play with Linux for some petty BS.

GeForce cloud gaming works though. I use it all the time. Not reliable enough for competition. But good enough for fun.

    [โ€“] ISolox@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I still gotta dual boot for Battlefield :(
