Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). "I was following orders" is not a defense to committing a crime.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I am equally shocked and completely unsurprised this wooden amalgamation of a parody of a human actually used the "I was just following orders" line. Not a dumb guard or a patrol agent or a desk clerk, but an actual Secretary of Homeland Security. (for whatever prestige or value is held in a position that was invented in 2003 because white people suddenly got scared of Muslims.)

[–] IzzyJ@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Well that's the wonderful thing about being a cult leader. You're the only one who can solve the problem. So you get whatever you want, you get all the credit when things go well, and when everything goes wrong... you become everyone's scapegoat. It's not a valid excuse, but it is human psychology.

I dearly hope she takes Miller with her somehow

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 45 points 5 days ago (2 children)

She does seem like the "I'm taking you down with me" type, doesn't she?

[–] Gerblat@lemmy.world 35 points 5 days ago

Pretty much everyone in the GOP is that type. It’s basically a prerequisite to be that selfish

[–] massacre@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago

We can only hope it's a rats on a sinking ship scenario.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 10 points 5 days ago

Yes, in a blaze of glory mexican stand type scenario would be great.

Following orders does not make you innocent.

However it does tie your guilt to others. All three bear guilt for her actions

I mean… she’s not completely wrong, but she could have, you know, not have followed fascist orders too. All on them need to be held accountable

[–] ClownStatue@piefed.social 30 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Agreed. “I was just following orders” has pretty famously been eliminated as a credible defense.

And here I was just naively blaming all three of them

[–] verdantshimada@piefed.world 93 points 5 days ago (5 children)

Y'all really don't understand that this headline is tailored for you.

In Noem's mind, this says "Kristi Noem Credits Her Actions to Trump and Stephen Miller."

She's running to the MAGA safehouse. This isn't "I was following orders." This is "I was given orders, and look at how perfectly I followed them!"

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 23 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ah, but she just sinned against Trump. She said something that can be interpreted as blaming Trump. That's a big no no to a narcissist.

[–] verdantshimada@piefed.world 9 points 5 days ago (2 children)

You can only see it this way if you're on the receiving end of a left-oriented headline. Your perspective is fueled by clickbait. Trump's perspective is still mafia mentality.

Trump's already publicly defended her on Fox News, and I can't tell if a throwaway quote on Axios or Trump standing in a Golden Corral or whatever the fuck it is, giving an interview about how she's "done it all" happened first - it's a matter of hours. Point is, she is loyal AF and she is his last line of defense on everything DHS does. He needs her now more than ever and she's survived much worse several times over already. She's the shield he uses for everything - and he's positioning himself that way for a long-term benefit to him. Bovnio was always disposable because he's not in the money club. Noem is, and she's young enough to have a career after all this if our timeline gets worse. Even if she gets impeached.

Trump can't play Noem out until it's worth it to him, and it's no where near that yet. Bovino was the cost already, and no one liked him on the right anyway. Plus he flew too close to the sun, and THAT was the sin to a narcissist, to think he could play at the same level. His job was as a shield for Noem, full stop. Homan is next up until he installs the next public-facing nazi cosplayer and goes to Maine to also be the fodder for the next round. Trump hates LEOs and the military until he needs them, and so they're the disposable ones to him.

I agree with you, this is her intent. But Trump and Steven will throw her under the bus to give the people a culprit and then keep doing everything they've been doing. This is why they sent Bovino home and replaced him with Homan.

Welp, we won't be seeing her much longer.

Guess she'll have to fall back on her hobby of shooting puppies in the face.

[–] lando55@lemmy.zip 13 points 5 days ago

Some would call it a hobby. For Kristi Noem it's a calling.

PeeWee Himmler is a student of Nazi Germany, and expected that Americans would fold up like Germans still recovering from WW1. He thought that murdering a few people in the streets would intimidate the entire country into staying in their houses. He doesn't understand that Americans grow up hearing fables of Revolutionaries whooping the most powerful army in the world.

Americans don't get intimidated, they get angrier, and eventually they get ferocious.

[–] KinglyWeevil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Tbh a big portion is that we have nearly live coverage from a million different angles. Without that the newspapers would have said he was a domestic terrorist and we would have had no further information.

I bet the fights, screaming matches, broken lamps, slammed doors and broken phones in the white house over the last week has been fucking glorious. I would pay thousands to be a fly on a wall there just to watch these unhinged freaks become unhinged freaks at each other when everything starts going off course.

They thought it would be different by now. They expected more legal victories (it's not covered but they've lost a LOT of ground in courts) and they thought they would have a stronger public mandate, they thought liberal, middle-class America would be looking at them like saviors and heroes by now, they thought their WWE fireworks and spectacle would win over more than the same, steady 28% - 30% of the country.

But here we are, Trump is becoming unmanageable and may literally just DIE at any moment, they've made reverse progress getting JD Vance ready to take the reigns, and everyone is just staring at Miller, this egg-headed wormtongue that keeps feeding Trump schizoid lines because he's basically just Elliot Rogers reincarnated. And now there are waves of rolling strikes going around, and the conservatives broadly are absolutely enraged about threats to their guns. Even the liberal nightly news is on network TV is outright saying Trump and his admin are making shit up. The tide is turning sharply.

There is some satisfaction in all this.

Perhaps her tongue should be cut out to verify that

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 20 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

This isn't her trying to excuse or justify her actions because she senses some looming consequence, this is her reiterating her loyalty to trump and the cause in the face of outside criticism.

edit: Also maybe push Miller under the bus, the reporting on this is kinda weird. Axios says there's calls for her resignation, MSN says there's calls for Miller to face censure... not actually sure what's true with this one

edit 2: much better article that explains the situation from Atlanta Black Star

Not a single braincell in that head.

[–] lolola@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 5 days ago

This is a yes-and moment. I thought it was silly that momentum was building around impeaching noem when what we clearly and obviously need to do is remove Trump. So, yes-and. Yes, impeach noem, AND remove Trump.

Hey all, I really want this to be true but let’s keep it above board. that site you just listed has a lot of scam sites linked at the bottom with AI slop trying to prey on vulnerable people to invest in vymnex/linkbait scams.

I hate what the right are doing too but we can remain to strive better than this. Don’t dive to this level.

Fight better.
