Is that a punishment? I’d rather low crawl through broken glass

[–] Cnote5@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago

Well, now we all know what an unlawful order looks like.

[–] AnchoriteMagus@lemmy.world 49 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I'm so glad I'm already out. It would really ruin my day to have to get into a screaming match with some pimply LTJG about being voluntold to see that piece of shit.

For people unaware of how Morale, Welfare, and Recreation work on military bases, you will get ordered to go see a movie or go to a AA baseball game or a cookout or whatever, and no, you can't not go.

I have no problem believing that Kegsbreath made this month's Mandatory Fun activity gazing into the soulless void for 2 hours.

Ah yes mandatory fun day. Fun fact one of the reasons I didn't even consider signing up with the military was because I heard enough stories about that bullshit that it I came to the conclusion I'd probably end up getting dishonorably discharged because of it. Also the autism but that's besides the point.

Does he not realize what vets are turning to as they retire or no longer re-enlist?

A lot of them took their Oath seriously.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the regime tries to make enlistment contracts longer and harder to get out of.

[–] AnchoriteMagus@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Absolutely. We already had manning problems across all the branches before everything went to hell. If they want to meet Trump's goals of new battleships / force reinvigoration, something with regard to enlistment / recruiting policy will have to change, and it won't be anything good.

This is the party of bringing back child labor, they're probably rubbing their hands together and molesting their couches thinking about the draft, too.

I was going to join up in 2024 but I wanted to wait until after the election. After Trump won… I decided to just stay at my shitty office job.

[–] AnchoriteMagus@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't blame you. If I were doing it all over again today, I would never join under this administration. Someone motivated to serve these days can help their country far better and more effectively by helping individuals at risk in their communities / working at a local and regional level against fascism.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

True, I just wanted the benefits you get but now those are slowly being dismantled so it’s not even worth it for that LMAO.

[–] AnchoriteMagus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

The cheap prescriptions are nice, I'll admit lol

[–] Burninator05@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

In 2018 I re-enlisted and remember internally laughing at the line '...obey the others of the president...' as I said it. I was at 18 years of service and just wanted to finish my time.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

My mom and older family all want me to join the Air Force at the very least.

My mom actually took me to breakfast to talk to someone about joining, but I only went so she'd get off my back about it.

Literally any time I said I didn't want to, she'd ask why. Like why do I need a reason to not want to join the military? I don't care if I'll mostly be removed from the worst shit, that can change literally at a moment's notice at literally anytime. I don't even do well with authority; like I'm not disrespectful, but it's a huge detriment to my mental health.

I also didn't want to be a tool of a fascist regime. And I knew that's where things were headed.

[–] USSEthernet@startrek.website 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They legally can't make you pay for something though so if you are "required" to go, they have to pay for it for you. Anytime something was mandatory, I just showed up, I wasn't breaking my little income for the extra bullshit.

[–] AnchoriteMagus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Very true. Any money I shelled out at those things was always on beer to get me through them.

When reached for comment, a Department of Defense official told Business Insider, "There is no Department of War directive requiring service members to see this film, though the film is fantastic."

I saw your quote and thought it can't be real. It's parody, right?

Nope, it's in the article. It's real. Fucking hell.

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Republicans learned from Nixon to not leave a trail. A wink, wink, nod, nod, has been SOP for them for some time.

Following orders for to a T. Rightly or wrongly that is a large part of being a good soldier.

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 56 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Wow.
What the hell did they do to deserve that punishment?
Worst that could happen to us during my time in the Army was being thrown in the brig.

[–] brap@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Isn’t it against the Geneva convention regarding group or cruel punishment?

[–] hayvan@piefed.world 20 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Fun fact: Geneva convention covers only war situations. Most violations are A-OK against your own citizens!

[–] neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Classic Hitler mistake.

You can punish and gas and murder your own citizens by the literal train-load; just don't try and do that in countries other than your own or eventually, many years later, after you've invaded half a dozen countries, someone will stop you.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Someone will try to stop you. If they fail you can just keep going.

[–] brap@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well TIL. But it sure feels like your government is at war with its citizens.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's feudal lords vs peasants. We need a god damned traditional peasant revolt, I'm telling you.

[–] brap@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well I can’t do much, but I can cheer you on from over the pond.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You started this by letting the Puritans get away. You should have nipped that shit in the bud and we wouldn't fucking have to deal with this shit right now.

[–] brap@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

I have no suitable response other than, “sorry guys, our bad”.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

That's wildly incorrect. War crimes also apply to civil wars and any armed conflict at all.

What usually comes up is the "tear gas is a war crime", which has a special exception for domestic policing and riot control. It's banned in war because the other side might respond with a much worse chemical weapon like sarin gas. That's not a concern in a riot.

[–] AnchoriteMagus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Like CS gas.

[–] Burninator05@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

I think there is an angle even grosser than being forced to go. Commanders can't make you spend your money on optional things. The trip was funded with tax money.

[–] RedGreenBlue@lemmy.zip 24 points 1 day ago

How trump runs all his buissnes. Have the goverment pay for them.

Oh yeah? Well that lady at the bus stop says I'm handsome.

  • Starts checking the Geneva convention against cruel and unusual punishments.

Sir, yes, sir.

proceeds to view the Melania movie Wikipedia page to technically comply with orders

Modern news headlines are so damn weird.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

So the Nazis pushed Nazi propaganda. Crazy!

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

I would stand outside the theater and ask people coming out for their ticket stub.

[–] ugandan_airways@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

You think they banned cellphones in the screenings too? Because I would think most people would just be staring at their phones instead of the movie screen

[–] atropa@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Not available yet on piracy platforms , great

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago
[–] sturmblast@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

.... so lame

Cruel and unusual punishment much?
