So if you're > 13, please go somewhere else?

Surely the law would have a religious exemption which would apply in this case

[–] CrackedLinuxISO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I know this comment is a joke, but the CA bill requires age bucketing for to be provided by the OS to "covered stores". Basically, any source of 3rd party programs.

Since TempleOS (at least, the original one written solely by Terry Davis) has no networking stack, no such "covered store" can exist. I think there's not even support to load external storage drives, so all programs on the machine are either written by the user or provided first-party by the OS. I think TempleOS would be exempt on those grounds.

It does actually have "half-assed FAT32 support" and I remember LTT managed to mount something back when they reviewed it.
Edit: it's got a Mount() function: https://tinkeros.github.io/WbTempleOS/Doc/Install.html

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 hours ago

I'm writing my lawyer as we speak.

Nah but wouldn't that be legitimately wild if someone pushed that to the point to where California had to make an exemption for temple OS specifically?

Dude now that I think about this I wonder if this could work.

Arguably this is a heretical perversion of TempleOS, as obviously this is a direct digital interface with God, and obviously God already knows everything about each and every one of us.

EDIT:

At the bare minimum, call it Reformed TempleOS, or something like that, lol.

[–] redsand@infosec.pub 33 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

For those unaware the creator of TempleOS ~~died~~ ascended a few years ago. Reformed really would be the minimum here as almost all of the code was written by him alone.

Terry Davis was an insane bigot, but goddamn, could that dude code.

Beyond that uh, I wash my hands of this.

May he find solace in the eternal embrace of the noodly one.

Schizophrenia isn't a handicap programming. It may even be helpful, which is disturbing. RIP crazy bastard.

Should look into madness studies. It's an entire college-level course on the cultural value of people with mental health disorders.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

Entirely seriously, I agree.

I've personally met a number of schizophrenics who are... astoundingly good at doing things in code, that work, but are extremely divergent from conventional ways of doing things.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 6 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

It seems like every software developing company should keep a department of schizophrenics, doing crazy coding, just to see what they come up with. Sooner or later, like a bunch of monkeys with typewriters, they'll come up with something cool.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

So basically a bizarre combination of the RCA research labs and a mental institution?

[–] WillFord27@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 10 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

He certainly liked the N word.

Although most of it was probably his schizophrenia talking. I figure somebody who made an entire OS because he though God told him to, can't be held 100% responsible for his actions...

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

Yeah.

If you've known any schizophrenics... well, a part of their whole thing is persistent delusions.

Things you cannot get them to change their mind about, to try and comprehend in a different way, realize are false or are incoherent.

Bigotry is subset of that, and, while certainly not all, some of the schizophrenics I've known have had one form or another of bigotry as one of those things they basically can't abandon, a mode or element of their thinking that never goes away.

The whole conceptual 'problem' is... with a schizophrenic... how do you know what parts of them are 'the schizophrenia talking', and which aren't?

You can't really.

Its a whole different way a mind can work, its a kind of neurodivergence.

Like, I'm autistic, a different kind of neurodivergent, and I attempted to autistically understand the thought processes of the schizophrenics I knew, trying to map out categories and flow charts and triggers and conditions.

... this didn't work.

They often don't understand their own thought processes, or will tell you two obviously logically mutually exclusive things are both true at the same time, and this will not bother them and they will just emphatically tell you its not inconsistent, with further logic that is also fairly obviously inconsistent.

But what kinds of thinking are 'disordered', and what kinds of thinking ... are logically consistent?

I could find no overall pattern to that with the schizophrenics I knew, nor even really any rhyme or reason that could stably describe a single one of them.

But, sometimes, the flipside of that, will be them explaining a way of thinking about something... that actually is valid, and is basically fucking wild, revolutionary, but it actually does logically check out when you work through it.

And then sometimes its a mix of both.

The best way that I have of understanding schizophrenia is basically that the pattern recognition and thus decision making framework within such a mind is radically different than 'the norm' (again I'm autistic so that's also reliant on my understanding of 'the norm'), and I can't really describe it in any more detail than that.

He was severely mentally ill and homeless by the end of his life, iirc doing youtube interviews for a big mac. He was a brilliant person who was failed by society and while i definitely don't condone his actions or rhetoric, its my understanding that he wasn't a bigot before his mental health declined. Im sure he had his biases that led to his bigotry later on, but that could be said about almost anyone.

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 97 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I guess the religious sites don't let you in if you are over a certain age.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 8 points 4 hours ago

Being underage is a welcome advantage in those circles. They aren't trying to keep the kids out, they're trying to invite them in.

[–] gurty@lemmy.world 25 points 10 hours ago

Glowies finally got to TempleOS.

Does the bitmap need to be 16 color, 640x480?

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Is an ASCII video okay?

Anyone remember the startrek ASCII video?

[–] frank@sopuli.xyz 8 points 10 hours ago (4 children)

Wasn't it the first (IV) episode of Star Wars? Maybe both existed

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 hours ago

I thought about that insanely long text file you opened in notepad, adjusted the page height and just hit and hold down "pgdown" and bam you had a handmade video running with IIRC a ski jump and someone hanging on the wall in the end as a hunt trophy. It was a long time ago πŸ––πŸ»

Star wars on telnet!! I recall watching this back then ha

[–] Haquer@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

towel.blinkenlights.nl was the original and is still up. Just point your favorite telnet client to it, and get some popcorn!

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

It's available on telehack.com.
https://telehack.com/telehack.html
SSH, rlogin or telnet are available.

For modem:

Line speeds of up to 14.4 kbps are available (up to 16.8 kbps in USRobotics HST mode). This is a single-line service with a 20-minute limit per call

Ugh there goes my day 😐

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 4 points 10 hours ago

That one you could watch via telnet?
