Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who has been diagnosed with pneumonia, is applying for free medical care through a federal program for emergency workers and others exposed to toxins following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to his lawyer.

More than 152,000 people have been enrolled in the initiative, the World Trade Center Health Program, which pays for medical research and provides free medical care to people affected by the terrorist attacks. Beneficiaries have access to doctors who specialize in Sept. 11-related illnesses, and the patients don’t face co-payments or deductibles.

What an absolute asshole.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 hours ago

It's the audacity for me

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago

He’s as good as dead. Pneumonia at his age is already incredibly dangerous but his lifestyle basically guarantees he won’t be making a comeback. Anytime a person over 75 is diagnosed with “pneumonia” the grim reaper is already in the room with them, it’s only a matter of time

I honestly shudder to think how such a shamelessly narcissistic mind operates. This man is a disgusting creature.

Oh hey, remember when he showed up in Borat 2 and showed us what a gross old scumball he is, then floundered to save face? Lol

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 49 points 16 hours ago

First, the people who were working at Ground Zero had no respirators because Bush's EPA found the site to be 'clean.'

Second, neither Giuliani or Bush has ever gone to a funeral for anyone who died of post-9/11 problems.

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago

Now this is Ayn Rand territory

[–] freshcow@lemmy.world 98 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Meanwhile, in functional countries this would be a non-story, because everyone would have guaranteed access to tax funded medical care already.

[–] DiarrheaSommelier@lemmy.ca 70 points 21 hours ago

He's a conservative so he only cares when it affects him personally.

The ghouls from Fallout are more human than this half-aborted zombie-ghoul hybrid.

Just tell him to use Trump's healthcare plan.

Whatever people think about Giuliani politically, it’s easy to forget how central he was during and after 9/11. A lot of people exposed that day are still paying for it physically decades later.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 12 points 12 hours ago

He was central only because he happened to be mayor at the time. This is also someone who, before he was mayor and as a police officer, lead a charge on city hall and occupied it with other police because they were sad that a black man became mayor.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

He MADE himself central. That's why

[–] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

The country let him too. "America's Mayor" he was called. He was a celebrity for a while, even cameoing in movies. It wasn't really until he showed what a crooked spineless fuck he was as Trump's crony that his image was permanently changed.

[–] Sludgehammer@lemmy.world 33 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I might be mixing up my right wing assholes, but didn't Giuliani oppose medical care for 9/11 emergency responders?

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 9 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Even if he personally didn't, he support a group of people that didn't want to give medical care for 9/11. Jon Stewart had to go and yell at them every few years to do the right think.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 6 points 11 hours ago

the same assholes who "support the troops".

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 27 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Is he sure he wouldn't rather have some horse dewormer or 1ppm of oregano in a gallon of water or some protein powder injected into his spinal fluid?

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 33 points 23 hours ago

Scumbag to the end.

[–] Phantaloons@piefed.zip 13 points 19 hours ago

A good waste of taxpayer money, but at least they'll be using his grave as an endless source for ammonia for years to come.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 17 points 22 hours ago (6 children)

Now I fully understand why everybody is negative towards him getting this care. And I fully get why everyone hates his existence completely.

That being said, if Giuliani never did anything after his mayoral term, he would be fondly remembered today. There was a time when he was remembered as the hero that held NYC together during and after 9/11. If he just stayed out of politics after that, and was only remembered the 9/11 mayor, he would actually have a legacy worth remembering.

But he didn't. He got back in the spotlight. He did everything wrong after that. He's become an embarassment, and a joke. He's basically a grifter at this point.

HOWEVER......he was still present at many 9/11 media sites, including the site of the destroyed towers in the days when asbestos was still in the air.

It took Jon Stewart to get this program approved. I'm unclear if Giuliani stood against it. I don't think he did. But regardless, if anyone deserves this program, it's the first responders. After that, second in line should be medical staff that helped during 9/11. After that would be Giuliani. I feel he should be low on the priority list, but still on the list. He DID do a lot to help NYC at that time.

With all that out of the way, I feel like everybody should have 100% free healthcare at all times.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 6 points 13 hours ago

Depending on if you want to give him credit for the NY mafia family crack down. He went after the Italian and any other mafia group that wasn't Russian. Don't look too much into that. I'm sure there wasn't any special deals going on back them. 🙄

[–] Monument@piefed.world 44 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

Hey, happy cake day!

Now, before we go getting all misty eyed over 9/11, let’s not forget that as mayor he hired an avowed racist that implemented the “stop and frisk” program, which targeted minority populations throughout NYC.

The racism got so bad that his police force raped a man with a broken broomstick who was chained up in the precinct. Afterward one of the officers paraded the bloody, feces slathered broomstick around as a trophy. The victim broke or lost several teeth, and had such severe internal damage that her was hospitalized for 2 months.

A few years later, they shot an unarmed guy 41 times after he ran away from them.

Giuliani is a horrible person who used a terror attack to bolster his image.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 30 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

My family is from the Bronx; my sister lived in Brooklyn for ages. I was talking to her about Guiliani after 9/11, and she said everyone in New York absolutely loathed him.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 7 points 13 hours ago

Locals tend to know their own better than the nation at large. Look at Trump's popularity in NYC even before he turned into neo Hitler, for example.

[–] DevDave@piefed.social 18 points 20 hours ago

Giuliani had the NYC emergency management/crisis center relocated to the WTC despite experts warning him that was a bad idea.

[–] jagermo@feddit.org 12 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

He gave us the press conference at the 4 Seasons .... Gardening.

I will always remember him for that and it would have been nice if that would have been the final chapter for him and Trump

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

Good point. He deserves at least some positive feelings for that laugh riot. Kinda like the Iraqi Information Minister.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 9 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I still can't wait to see Danny DeVito play him in his biopic.

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I think Jim Carrey could do a good job too, and matches the physique better... But if you can get DeVito, you go with DeVito. Absolute legend.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

You think Jim Carrey matches Rudy Giuliani's physique better than Danny DeVito?

Granted, I haven't seen Jim Carrey lately, so maybe he shrunk and got wider. Now that I think of it I'm not so sure...

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 1 points 12 hours ago

Certainly not his recent physique, but his old one, sure.

[–] oldscratchXV@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago

The only care he needs is medically induced suicide.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

The one time I hope the care doesn't work out.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 2 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

What's the reverse of leopards eating faces?

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

Leopards eating stuff that the prey animals would have eaten fits this situation. So grass?

[–] Elextra@literature.cafe 7 points 21 hours ago

Faces vomiting leopards

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 3 points 23 hours ago

Ouroboros eating ouroboros.
