Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

If someone replies with just the words "that's not dull", I interpret it as more of a gatekeep-y response. The ones I naturally read as compliments usually have a little more flair, e.g. "Way too interesting to post here" "this is more of a c/extraordinarygentlemensclub post"

Checked to see if that was a real comm, i'm dissapointed.

Be the change you want to see in the world

well I should start by saying this is not really a shower thought and would make more sense in ask lemmy but for myself its kinda a compliment.

A question can be a shower thought, especially if it's a rhetorical question.

Not to mention, the Philosophical Raptor meme format is pretty much just interrogative shower thoughts

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wait. Are you complimenting or gatekeeping?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

a bit of joking because of his topic and a bit of gatekeeping because it is the wrong community for a question but he is saying its rhetorical.

I've only seen it in a you're selling yourself short fashion.

As long as it's something you did, people seem quite relaxed about what gets posted.

I've only seen it in a you're selling yourself short fashion.

Yeah, that's usually how I see it, or maybe just how I've always interpreted it.

Not a shower thought

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Mostly a compliment. You can get a gut feeling from comments that just say: "Not dull." or similar.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Depends if it's truly dull or not

[–] wildncrazyguy138@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago

This guy’s a total shower.

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 4 points 1 week ago

They're admitting how dull they are.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

We're jealous.

[–] kbal@fedia.io 3 points 1 week ago

Most likely they are pointing out that you lack a certain subtlety of understanding and have made a mistake.

it's like the unpopular opinion sub, technically you have to upvote stuff you don't like

Matters of taxonomy.

I count that as gatekeeping. It's the reason my contribution to that community has degreased over 90%. If it was just "men's club" then I'd have a ton of stuff to post there but nowdays I just consider it all too interesting to post there but not interesting enough to post anywhere else so I just don't post it anywhere then.

[–] mangaskahn@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Start your own community. I'd follow mildly interesting men's club.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 5 points 1 week ago

Careful that it doesn't morph into downright interesting men's club, it's a slippery slope

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 1 points 1 week ago

I think you should take all of it as praise

[–] untorquer@quokk.au 1 points 1 week ago

There is the other option, that the post was so underwhelming as to have lost any meaningful attribute allowing categorization as something that could be described as dull.

Which again could be utter insult or the highest of praise. 🤷
