Suspect dies after firing upon agents at White House checkpoint, Secret Service says, with a bystander also injured

A gunman has been shot dead after approaching a White House security checkpoint and firing at officers, federal officials have said.

The White House, where Donald Trump was present, was briefly locked down on Saturday as the sound of a sustained volley of gunshots rang out, sending journalists in the area running for cover.

During the shooting, a bystander was also shot. The Secret Service said: “It remains unclear whether the bystander was struck by the suspect’s initial gunfire or during the subsequent exchange of gunfire.”

“It remains unclear whether the bystander was struck by the suspect’s initial gunfire or during the subsequent exchange of gunfire.”

Odd how they don't explicitly mention the possibility that the bystander was shot by the Secret Service.

Also, if there was any likelihood they could pin that on the shooter, they'd have angled the words to encourage that conclusion. Meaning it's extremely likely the Secret Service shot the bystander, and they're hoping it'll be forgotten by the general public.

What a world we live in where a street near the white house is as dangerous as a kindergarten classroom.

I wouldn’t let my children anywhere near the White House. Do you know how many pedophiles live there?

Or the administration is doing some more theatrics. If no real incident comes to light, I call total bullshit.

Reports of two gunshot victims in the hospital. One may be the suspect. The other may be a bystander; hope they’re going to be OK.

Just saw another article, says secret service shot someone they claim attacked them. Theater

The bystander is a shame though. Expected with the quality of swine we give badges to in this country.

But trumpty dumpty told us DC was so safe you could walk down the street with your "lover". Did he lie???

[–] markko@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

In any sane country they'd both be equally dangerous (i.e. completely safe) too.

I can't believe we're on the timeline where the white house goes on lockdown and no one really cares because the administration has the credibility of the boy who cried wolf. The stupidest part is that this is their own doing.

To be fair, a completely credible and real shooter using a real gun actively putting live rounds into the whitehouse with actual real life deadly bullets, for real and not in any fictional or euphemistic manner, would also not really be something I care about.

Well, unless it ended the life of a fascist, then maybe there would be a silver lining I could appreciate.

There's also the line of thought that if there was a real scenario, it's the end result of their own gun policies. if their morality had any consistency, they would be quietly celebrating it like they do mass shootings.

The shooter is dead, shot by security, but also "a bystander was wounded." That use of the passive voice seems to indicate a high likelihood the bystander was shot by the security guards and not the dead guy. I'm not seeing any stories yet that tell for sure though.

God damn it, why can't one of these people have better aim?

For legal reasons, this is a joke

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

Shooting focus and wanting to commit an assassination generally don't go together.

Seems like a real risky part of town to put a ballroom.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This all could have been avoided if I had my $2billion golden ballroom goddamn it! 🫲🍊🫱

[–] Zier@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

$20 Billion.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 11 points 1 day ago

Please god just use an FPV drone. Stop trying to fucken shoot this guy

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Watching the coverage, apparently someone pulled a gun close to the White House and got taken down by Secret Service.

One bystander was also injured, but it's unclear if it was by the perpetrator or the Secret Service.

I counted twenty six. None of them close, of course.
