4K video playback?
Of course it can. I'm sure my cell phone could run doom at 4k. What a dump headline.
The point is that they changed the claim from "4k 60 fps with FSR" to "up to 4k with FSR" which is a very different claim.
The GPU is disappointing. And I think if they want to help with sales, they should sell one that doesn't have NVMe and users can slot their own in.
Mmmm the problem is ease of access for hardware noobs who want to play out of the box.
Here's a fun fact, though I didn't really think it would make a difference at first, cyberpunk 2077 got a substantial performance increase when I moved it off my old spindle HDD to my nvme SSD.
They wanted to deliver a PC console experience. Plug and play. Not all these conditions for performance based on how you tweak it.
The suggestion to leave out the NVMe to do it yourself is, because experienced users might already own one to reuse it. Off course they have to flash the operating system and install it themselves too. But tis could bring down the price substantially. And the price is a bit more stable from VALVEs side and less dependent on another hardware part, because they don't have to wait for the companies to sell the drive for a good price. For everyone else who want an out of the box experience can still buy the "regular edition". So offering this as an alternative is a good idea. BTW I made the exact same suggestion months before the launch. :-)
Selling a barebones kit without RAM and SSD would be a great idea, for those who already have something they can use.
Without those massive money sinks right now, what would that price look like? Since the price was clearly increased in a similar way as the Steam Deck due to that.
I think too. This also gives VALVE a lot more headroom and being less dependent on these Crucial parts. For the SSD sizes between 2230 and 2280 are supported (if I understand correctly). Searching PCPartPicker: SSD for relevant drives results in cheapest available parts for about 70 Euros and upwards. VALVE probably have better deals. The RAM is currently only single channel 16GB DDR5-5600. On PCPartPickerf: RAM the cheapest part is around the price point of 190 Euros.
Based on these prices, without RAM and SSD I would expect the Steam Machine price reduction at around 250 Euros, maybe more. That would bring down the price without controller to less than 800 Euros, probably even less. And VALVE can sell without waiting for these parts too and build faster and more in shorter amount of time.
The Xbox Series S was also 'up to' 4K, so I guess this is expexted, but still I wish manufacturers took their plausible deniability advertisements a bit more seriously...
Microsoft has been quite transparent about the fact that the Series S can only do 4K with upscaling:
The primary difference between the two consoles is that the XBOX Series X displays games in native 4K, is available with a UHD Blu-ray Disc player, and you can choose between 1TB SSD or 2TB SSD. XBOX Series S is designed for disc-free gaming at 1440p (with the ability to upscale to 4K) and you can choose between 512GB SSD or 1TB SSD.

One might argue that even the Series X upscaled to 4K more often than not, but still. It can actually render a number of games at native 4K, just like its predecessor. Interestingly, the Series S GPU is weaker than the one used by the One X, albeit more modern, which impacts backwards compatibility, limiting it to One S resolutions and performance with Xbox One, 360 and OG titles.

Not surprising, I’m actually a bit shocked they pushed the 4k thing so hard when they had chosen this config a while ago.
Sucks for valve. I was hoping this thing would be a knockout just a little pricey due to ramagedon.
At half the price this would be more attractive. I’m sure it’ll get dev support like the deck. But it’s hard to be excited for last gen perf at higher prices.
If games were actually optimised for this kind of hardware, there would be no problem. We dont actually need all these hardware upgrades every year. Games still run like shit, at some point we have to demand better from our games, rather than constantly upgrading our setups for nothing.
This, Valve spent a lot of time optimising their own engine to run on potatoes because of Dota's popularity some time back. But ofc they've added a whole bunch of stuff afterwards that undid bunch of it. Havent tried anything with source engine since early "open beta" days of Deadlock so not sure where it stands now.
Source 2 is overall pretty good. It's definitely one of the most performant engines, in the right hands. I'm not fussed about bleeding edge graphics though, I'd much rather have more framerate instead of a few more lights.

This applies to games only. Minesweeper isn't gaming, it is a lifestyle.
My PC can do 4K, too. But it's only gonna get like 12fps in most shit. Also AMD themselves says FSR4 is slower than FSR3. You get better image quality at the trade off of lower performance.
You'd be surprised how well some stuff can run. Doom 2016 can run comfortably at 4k on a GTX 1070 with graphics maxed out. Sure, you won't play a brand new AAA game with maxed out graphics at 4K, but if you make some compromises, you can go pretty far.
I'm not too sure about the claim, but if they keep optimizing the upscale technology just as they did with proton, it will be everyone win.
