In my area these turtles will hang out on roadsides to sun and lay their eggs. One day, I'm on my way home from work, and I almost rear-end a car stopped on a blind curve. The occupants were in the middle of the road, trying to coax a BIG mama snapper off the road with canoe paddles. I had to tell them that mamma will move on on her own, and all they're doing is making her hunker down.
Fortunately they took my advice and all parties were able to leave with their digits intact. I imagine mama moved on at some point too, once she calming down from being seriously pissed off by some tourists.
Don't mess with these guys unless you have to. theyll bite your fingers/hand clean off (depending how big they are) One of my fave YouTube Channels just put a video out on his pet hybrid snapper. Its a cross between a common and an alligator. Something i found interesting was he talks about handling the turtles and how if you support the bottom plate of the turt it doesn't snap at you (as much). Guess the way most people handle them like a burger can hurt the turtle.
I still have a scar on a finger from being bit by a wild baby snapper I found in the woods when I was little. Grabbed him by his rear legs, turns out, they can in fact reach.
Gamera is really neat!
Gamera is filled with meat!
Man, don’t mess with these things when they’re full size. They are MENACING. I tried to get one off the road once and it chased me away while snapping any time I tried to come near.
As a kid exploring in the woods, I picked up one unknowingly by the back at the edge of a pond. As I lifted it up I saw the head start to come out, and yeeted it far into the water. Yay for reflexes. Feel bad for him, it was my fault, but I'm sure he was fine.
I would’ve had the same response lmao. They are terrifying and their necks are exceptionally long. I was trying to grab this one by the sides and it turned around to try and bite me at record speed.
Iirc gotta grab them on the shell right above their head, try at own risk.
Official word from wildlife experts is to help turtles across the road, carrying them in the direction they're facing.
Except for Snapping Turtles. There's no safe place to grab them unless you have thick leather gloves.
That’s what I tried and failed to do because they honestly scare the shit out of me. They’re so prehistoric and amazing, but I run run awayyy
Idk if this a common or alligator turtle but the common ones are like 30lbs and I've seen ones as big as 50, alligator can be 3 times that.
You'll be happy to know that all my experiments attempting to transmit rabies to snapping turtles ended with disappointment. Apparently you've gotten be warm blooded to contract it, and them stealing my fingers or not... Still cold blooded
Tokka!
