phpBB is forum software written in PHP. It was notable for being free, whereas its contemporary competitors, Invision and vBulletin, cost money. They were all pretty popular in the 2000s and early 2010s before MySpace and Facebook kinda took everything over.

How do you feel a PHPBB differs from other bulletin boards?
Since you don't care to elaborate on the acronym I can only assume it means something wildly different to you than the rest of us.
Bulletin Board software written in PHP.
I don't know what PHP stands for either, but BB stood for Bulletin Board. PHP is the programming language it was written in. You could have just said forums and been more accurate; most people know what those are.
But no, Lemmy is not like a forum, it's like a more liberal Reddit, which was like Digg but more expansive, and Digg, in turn, was like a better Fark (though, some will fight you for saying that). All of those are news aggregators. Forums work differently.
Forums are still around, but they aren't as popular as they once were.
Also, "won't" and "can't" do not mean the same thing. "Can't" is kind of a funny concept when it comes to knowledge on the Internet. For example, a DuckDuckGo search quickly reveals that PHP used to stand for "Personal Home Page" but now stands for "PHP Hypertext Preprocessor." But never mind that, it's a scripting/programming language for websites and forums and things like that.
IIRC it's a recursive acronym. PHP Hypertext Preprocessor.
(Disclaimer: I remembered "preprocessing" but thought that was wrong so originally put just "processor" until I looked it up.)
No, bb forums were like one singular sub/instance with lots of dedicated people and like 3 'off topic' sections for the fans of that subject to talk about nothing.

I never used them. did the old usenet back in the day but really was pretty limited on dialup stuff.
I still miss usenet. And I started out on flat ascii bbs'.

well, reddit and lemmy both look like old BBS', which is one of the reasons I prefer them. (Have just been looking at new reddit on desktop and holy hell, what unmitigated garbage. I used to be on a niche BBS which got bought by a company and turned into what new reddit looks like now; they lost about 20% of their users (including me) who couldn't stand the new platform.)
Exactly like my stakeholders at my job: they introduce a term, refuse to further explain it until half development is done and we find out via other methods wtf is that, and understanding that everything needs to change, for the fifth time
I wasnt a huge bb guy but I'd say no. Lemmy doesnt have the same discussion style as a fourm. Much more drive by commenters and discussion always ends up offtopic or repetitive. But in the positive the freedom allows a lower barrier of entry so more different perspectives and a much more enjoyable posting experience day to day. Getting bitched at by mods or spending an hour crafting a response is a bit much these days.
