I think they opened sardine cans

[–] em2@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 week ago

They were also on canned corned beef.

Gotta be it!

We still use them here in Canada for stuff like canned ham and Klik luncheon meat. I've got one in my cupboard right now.

The technology exists to make pull tabs on cans, so why do they do this?

Yeah it literally is. It's also part of the brand if you're expecting a key opener and suddenly get a pull tab. For a lot of people used to the same thing for decades it can be a sudden shock and makes loyal customers view a brand differently.

Also as a related fun fact, Hawaii has different soda cans than the rest of the world because an old canning line was shipped there and coca cola just ships syrup concentrate that turns 1:1000 into cola, and the old canning line cans it.

Do you vaguely remember these because you’re too old or because you’re not old enough?

Spam and Corned Beef! Yum!

I feel like I’ve seen these once, maybe twice, in the last decade. Maybe not these exact openers but something very similar.

Saw thumbnail, assumed they were the little screwdriver like things you use (in the US) when your sibling locks the door to your room. But no, I haven't seen these in a while because I am not a cartoon mouse tempting a cartoon cat towards a traumatic brain injury.

These work perfectly to open bathroom doors. The kind with a round button you push in order to lock it. Sometimes people would open the door all the way when leaving the bathroom so the button would be pressed in and causing the handle to be locked. Then sometimes the wind slammed the door shut.. well, time to go get "the key".

I remember the tin breaking and having to get pliers to finish opening the can and slicing my finger open because it’s like a razor blade.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 4 points 1 week ago

I’ve only encountered cans with those a few times, and I just used a can opener on them.

Tin can openers, for cans that had a tab with a tear away strip.

I tried using that once, to open a can of corned beef. Gave up and just cut it open with a tin opener.
