Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Wearable HUD glasses were something I was so keen to finally get in the tech roadmap for the last 20 years.

Now the tech is utterly fucking ruined because a bunch of billionaire parasites have to keep their grubby fingers on everyones data for their shitty enterprises

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 58 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

It's been the way of things lately ... smartphone, smart home, smartwatch, wearable tech, machine learning ... so much wasted potential. And even if you build your own solution without big tech, almost none of the people you know will do the same, often even if you literally give it to them for free.

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

For that reason I try to not buy anything 'smart'.

The only things 'smart' I keep are my laptop and my phone, and I keep a hammer nearby in case they make odd sounds.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Yeah. I even installed GrapheneOS on my phone, but I have such a distaste for smartphones at this point that I barely do anything with it beyond basic necessities. TBH I don't know what I'll do for my next phone, I don't want to keep buying into this ecosystem, but Fairphone or the various Linux phone attempts are expensive and I need a little more features than what a "dumb phone" provides.

I wouldn't call laptops "smart", though. It's too easy to install Linux on them.

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Fairphone is good tbh, the big issue imo is that compared to GOS its security is seriously lacking.

You could go for a Jolla community phone, perhaps? That one runs Linux through Sailfish OS.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Fairphone is good, yes, but it's also like 500€, and that's too much for a phone IMO - I'm not saying that they're not worth it, but that's a lot of money for something that's so easily lost or broken. Even factoring in Fairphone's superior repairability, it's a hard sell for me.

Haven't looked into Jolla for a while. But these are the first two sentences on their website:

Jolla is a Finnish company specializing in privacy-first OS and Edge AI solutions. Founded in 2011, we continue the legacy of Nokia and MeeGo, driving mobile innovation into the human-centric AI era.

Can't say this inspires much confidence. Probably still better than Google Pixel, though, so I'm going to look into that some more.

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

almost forgot, but here's also a whole ass list I made of things and services made, owned, and/or based in Europe!

for the phone OS stuff, check out this one

[–] doctorflynt@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

as far as i know the ai part from jolla is not integrated into their phones but they sell an ai-pc or something where you can selfhost a llm with.

[–] djdarren@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I love running Graphene, I really do. But I've been on it for 18 months now, and it's getting real tiring trying to load up another app that's updated and now won't work without permission from the Play Store.

I have no interest in going back to iPhone, not now I've tasted the freedom of Android, and have absolutely no taste for using Google's brand of Android. So I guess I'll just keep using Graphene in the fervent hope that all of the websites I have to use will continue to be accessible if you can't use the app.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, I just don't bother with using anything from the Play Store. I just want my phone to not be expensive spyware. But there's a decent chance that I'll eventually end up needing something that requires the Play Store, even if I was able to avoid it so far.

Nice callback

[–] djdarren@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ever since it was pointed out to me that every new tech solution from the bigger companies can draw a direct line to "how will it benefit the military", I've been far, far less interested in pretty much all of it.

Even with something like smart glasses you can see how users can be used as beta testers to get the product shrunk down to something a country's military can use to wield power. Pretty much everything Elon Musk has a hand in falls into that category. The Cybertruck looks and is fucking stupid, but it's useful to Tesla as a development platform for a replacement for the Hummer. They don't give a shit what regular folks think about it as long as they can build on it to sell $bns worth to the US military. Starlink and SpaceX are the same.

About the only company that doesn't seem to be actively walking that path is fucking Apple. They seem to be content ~~stealing~~ making a shitload of cash from RAM and storage upgrades to devices that people are only buying because their six year old, £2000 MacBook is now considered obsolete. And coercing everyone to lock into their platform across all of their devices.

[–] piccolo@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The Cybertruck looks and is fucking stupid, but it's useful to Tesla as a development platform for a replacement for the Hummer.

Then why was it built like complete shit? Like there is not a single thing about the CT to be modified for miltary abuse.

The tesla semi has vastly more chance of being modifed for miltary use.

[–] djdarren@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The first version was, but you can bet your arse that Elon got chatting to some high ups in the Department of Defence when he was given access to the White House, and you can bet that the research they've done into making an all terrain vehicle (of sorts) is groundwork for a mk2 that could feasibly be put to use in a war zone.

I'm not saying it's a guarantee, but you and I both know that it's the logical end goal for pretty much all of the big tech companies right now. Get in on a lucrative military contract that's going to rake in the cash for a decade to come. And that cash will be far more than just selling to broke civvies.

[–] piccolo@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

I mean. The miltary has been known for funding crockpot ideas. Rather or not it actually ever gets into real production.

Also, you know Elon already has miltary contracts right? With SpaceX?

[–] Opisek@piefed.blahaj.zone 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Eh, one can still hope for some open hardware HUD glasses WITHOUT espionage sensors (cameras, microphones).

Since I recently got into swimming, I found one there are swimming goggles that display stats like your heartrate and lap times as an HUD with a built-in heartrate sensor.

While I'm not serious enough about swimming to invest into that, I still think the technology is really cool when used correctly.

[–] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'd one day like some kind of detachable hidden camera, if only for the reason that recorded video seems to be the only way to get justice in the face of police or sexual assault crimes.

I'd also like a not-so hidden camera that could record a bunch of stuff hands free in case I want to archive something or if I need proof of something for insurance.

I'm very disappointed but not surprised that all the frontier technologies right now are being used by perverts. I hate the pervert economy.

[–] Opisek@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 week ago

Thing is, if you get a hidden camera to protect from predators, the predators get hidden cameras to prey. There's no way past it, technology can always be used in both ways. I don't have a solution.

I like to naïvely believe in the good of humanity and than everyone is good at core. Of course, improved social structures, rehabilitation, education, and so on would help.

The other part is that hidden cameras are, of course, a thing already, so why not use them, too? I suppose I would like to see regulations which mandate a blinking red light on all commercially sold cameras and flash sound for pictures. I have been photographed without consent in the past. Still, people would cover those diodes up and find ways to disable sound cues.

Time to design some clothes with extremely bright IR lights that blind all cameras pointed at you?

[–] cyberfae@piefed.social 8 points 1 week ago

You could always get a pair of xr glasses like the viture luma and plug them into something like an orange pi or Linux phone. I would not try daisy chaining adapters to plug it into a raspberry pi though, learned the hard way that if one of the cable starts wiggling it will cause static and shutting on and off. Also DO NOT forget to tape the camera if there is one so people don't think you're a creep.

The only reasonable position with meta glasses. They should go the way of the flock.

This is the way

What is the opposite of rage-baiting? Upvote baiting? Virtue signalling? Karma whoring?

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Posting content so popular with the community that it feels cheap? Some form of slop maybe.

dw, I'll try to make my next post actual rage-bait :3

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm not talking about you. I mean the person who originally posted this (?? On Twitter or whatever that is).

[–] Tiresia@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 week ago

I think this would fit under "justice porn". Not sure if there is a lemmy for it, but there is a subreddit.

[–] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hey, whatever we call it, it gives a blueprint for how to get your friends to stop wearing these things.

If "glasshole" can kill Google Glass, maybe we can kill Meta glasses too.

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

You can still use "glasshole". They're glasses.

[–] capuccino@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

engagement bait

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

To be honest, when Google Glass came out, I was kinda excited by the technology in hopes of the development and experience of augmented reality. Google was less evil then (but still well on its way to becoming evil).

In Neil Stephenson's Snow Crash A gargoyle is someone who walks around continuously jacked into the internet (called the Metaverse -- before Facebook took the Meta moniker). Gargoyles can look up anything at any moment, and could totally be annoying for the speed at which information was at the ready for them.

Hiro Protagonist (the main character; Yes, that's his name.) eventually becomes a gargoyle in the course of the story.

I totally wanted to be a gargoyle.

I am a pervert, but I don't perv on people without their consent, so yeah, no AR for me.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think cameras are the primary reason why we are seeing a significant shift in support for police.

Even to this day, people filming is why ICE tends to retreat.

I support cameras. I absolutely do not support tech companies making these cameras, and using the footage to train AI or worse, violate individual privacy.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago

Can confirm. The killing of Michael Brown and the following unrest in Ferguson was the first major police action in the US in which independent news correspondents streamed live footage on the field, and it didn't get filtered by news agencies. It showed the police in their full brutal glory, wrecking the neighborhood with their MRAPs and saturating the area with CS gas without any objective except to make the community unlivable.

The world was aghast.

A similar thing happened during the George Floyd protests and then again when footage from Gaza escaped the internet. Apparently the public has no stomach for police brutality, for relentless military strikes on civilians or for genocide when they get to look at it up close.

Hello fellow respectful pervert

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Free market prevails!

[–] DaGreenGobbo@feddit.uk 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Did he stop being a pervert after he got rid of them? Or is it just less noticable?

He's now only a pervert in the cool ways

[–] TerrabyteMarx@quokk.au 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Obviously not a fan of meta or surveillance but it might be nice to get all those creepy moments on record or at least make people more afraid to act that way in the first place.

Better than walking away and questioning whether or not it actually happened. Potential to print out pictures and publicity humiliate people who make it harder to participate in society.

What if FOSS, only normalised if you're part of a minority and they're only kept on outside of community spaces

What if I get a service dog and the dog wears them instead

[–] wezzzy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

I vote for putting REGULAR glasses on the dog though. He can do that all day.

Maybe if done to gather specific information at a specific time, but not as something you keep running outside of that.

[–] SinAdjetivos@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

You should read up on Steve Mann. He's been wearing essentially a homebrew/personalized version since the late 90s and has been trying to warn us of this future since then.

Some of his favourite uses were real life ad-block, meta-vision(seeing where cameras are looking) and other forms of what he calls "souvelliance".

[–] Th4tGuyII@fedia.io 7 points 1 week ago

Ah yeah, the old "Good Guy with the X"...

Cause we know that argument pans out so well when applied to other facets of life
